Live Screening of Union Finance Budget 2022-2023

The Union Budget of India for 2022–2023 was presented by the Union Finance Minister of India, Ms. Nirmala Sitharaman. The Budget was screened live over Google Meet for the benefit of the students and the faculty of the BBA(Financial Services) Programme on 01.02.2022 from 11:00 a.m. onwards. The objective of this activity was to make students familiar with the Budget presentation and learn to identify the key points from the Budget. A total of 65 (57 students and 8 faculty members) attended the live screening. The students were also provided the Key Features of Budget 2022-2023 provided by the Budget Division, Ministry of Finance, Government of India. The students willingly attended the live screening and appreciated the initiative of the Department. All the faculty members of the Department also participated in the activity. Asst. Prof. Grishmi Thakur coordinated the activity.

Workshop on Basics of Statistics

The Post-Graduate Department organised a 04 Hour Workshop on ‘Basics of Statistics’ for the students of M.Com Part I from 11th January to 14th January 2022 from 3:30 – 5:30 p.m. The sessions were conducted through online mode via Google Meet platform. The objective of the workshop was to provide the students with a comprehensive knowledge of various statistical techniques and its practical usage in not only research but also in our day-to-day life. The Resource Person for the session was Dr. Dhaneesh Kumar, Assistant Professor, Dnyanprassarak Mandal’s College and Research Centre, Assagao. He explained all the topics theoretically and practically using various examples and practice problems.

On the first day, Mr. Dhaneesh emphasized on the basics and importance of various statistical tools and techniques in research as well as in today’s world, he started with the basic concept of ‘Mean’. He then went on to explain measures of central tendency and dispersion- its types, skewness which talks about the shape of the curve, and kurtosis which talks about the normality of the distribution  along with probability distribution-  normal, binomial, poisson distribution with practical examples for better understanding. At the end of the session the doubts raised by the students were clarified.

Day Two started with the concept of relationship analysis. Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient and regression analysis along with standard deviation and variance were covered with practical problems and examples for better understanding. Mr. Kumar addressed all the questions raised by the students at the end of the session. Overall it was an informative session.

10000 Steps Fitness Challenge

The Department of Physical Education and Sports organized 10 days, 10000 Steps Fitness Challenge Program from 4th to 14th January 2022 for their students and staff by using any Step Tracker Pedometer.  14 individuals took part in 10000 Steps Fitness Challenge Program out of which 10 participants successfully completed it. The Participants had to take screenshot of 10000 steps completion on any Step Tracker Pedometer for 7 consecutive days and send it on pesdcce@vvm.edu.in. The participants who successfully completed this 10000 steps fitness challenge for at-least 7 days and more out of 10 days were given e-certificates. The main aim of conducting this 10000 Steps Fitness Challenge was to make the students and staff physically and mentally active during the Covid 19 Pandemic.

Celebration of National Youth Day and Birth Anniversary of Swami Vivekananda

The NSS unit celebrated National Youth Day and Birth Anniversary of Swami Vivekananda on 12th January 2022. Every year on January 12, India celebrates National Youth Day, also known as Yuva Diwas, to commemorate the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda and to pay tribute and honour his teachings. With an objective to spread his teachings among the youth, the NSS Unit this year, organised an online activity where the volunteers had to post as their social media status, a message on the topic “Swami Vivekananda’s message to the Youth”.

Volunteers enthusiastically participated in the activity and posted messages to reach out to hundreds of youth and others in and outside the state. 118 volunteers participated in the activity.

“Team work and Communication”

The Department of Computer Science organized a training session on ‘Team work and Communication’ for the students of F.Y.B.Voc on 11th January, 2022 from 3.00 to 4.30pm and 12th January, 2022 from 9.00-10.30 am via online mode. The main objective of the session was to train the students to work in a team and to highlight aspects of effective communication.

The Resource Person for the session was Ms. Caroline Stewart Silva, a Professional Life Coach, Impact Training Solutions. The session began with an introduction of the Resource Person by Sneha Prabhudessai, faculty member of Computer Science Department. Ms. Caroline Silva commenced the session with the brief introduction to the topic – teamwork. While emphasizing on the aspect of‘Accountability’ she said that each team member should be accountable for profit or loss gained by the team.

On day two, Ms Caroline spoke about the qualities of good team player. She then explained the process of communication by conducting an activity for the students. In this activity, she asked students to take a sheet of paper and fold it without giving directions to the folds. With this activity she actually wanted to convey the message that communication should be precise and complete. The session concluded at 10.30 am

5-Day Financial Education Programme for Youth Citizens’

VVM’s Shree Damodar College of Commerce & Economics in association with NISM and Kotak Securities organized a ‘5- Day Financial Education Programme for Young Citizens’, from  25th to 30th January 2022 from 03:00 to 5:00 pm via Google Meet platform. 50 students of B.Com, BBA (FS) & M.Com participated in the program. The Resource Persons for the program were Dr. Sarika Lohana, SEBI & NISM Empaneled Certified Trainer in Securities Market and Dr. Anita Saini, SEBI & NISM Empaneled Certified Trainer in Securities Market

Dr. Sarika Lohana welcomed all the participants and briefed the students about the programme namely – “Kona Kona Shiksha Programme” which is a Kotak Securities CSR Initiative. She emphasized that this course will give the students deep insights about securities market and will enhance the financial literacy. She further introduced the speaker of the session Dr. Anita Saini who is SEBI & NISM Empaneled Certified Trainer in Securities Market. The speaker further said NISM – National Institute of Securities Market is an educational initiative by SEBI, which aims at creating awareness of personal finance framework, employment opportunities, empowering students to answer interviews confidently. She mentioned that only 2% of the Indian population is investing in mutual funds.

The speaker began with the 1st Session – Importance of Investment. The concept of Impulsive Spending was explained with an interesting example.  Dr. Anita Saini gave an interesting solution to beat inflation i.e. to invest some portion of your saving in Financial Products. The popular asset classes like Equity, Fixed Deposits, Gold and Property were explained in detail.

Dr. Saini then commenced with Session 2- Financial Investment Opportunities, here various types of asset classes like cash, equity, fixed income, real estate, and commodities were explained and compared with each other. And lastly the speaker discussed about Small Saving Schemes like PPF, Sukanya Samriddhi Scheme and various Fixed Deposits namely Bank FD, Post Office FD and company FD.

The session on day 2 started with a strength of 45 participants. The Resource Person Dr. Sarika Lohana began with a brief introduction on mutual funds. She explained ways in which one can invest in gold without investing in physical gold like Gold ETFs in the form of Gold Mutual Funds and Sovereign Gold Bonds. Next, she explained the requirements one needs to adhere to when directly investing in Equity. The process and prerequisites to invest in securities market were covered. She explained the three accounts that are required to register in the security market namely, a bank account, trading account with a broker and Demat account with a depository participant.

On Day- 3 the Resource Person Dr Sarika Lohana started with the introduction of Primary market. She explained, how a company raise funds from all investors, usually for new projects, expansion and repayment of debts. She also spoke on the Initial public Offerings (IPO) and its requirements. Price Discovery of share in public offering, the fixed price method and the book building method was covered in detail. She also elaborated on how one can invest in secondary market and what is the due diligence to be kept in mind while investing in secondary market.

Dr. Anita Saini started the Day-4 session by explaining how to place an order for investment, by personally visiting the broker’s office, through email along with the steps involved therein or via online websites or apps. Further, she spoke about the market watch section on online websites and as certain the important information contained in the section like last traded price and percentage change. The Resource Person also informed the participants about the various types of investment orders that an investor can place such as limit order, market order, after market order, immediate order, stop loss order, cover order and bracket order. She also went on to highlight certain key trading terminal features like, the login process, access to market watch list , creating a customized watch list , placing of buy or sell order, access to trade book , access to order book and seamless fund transfer.

The Resource Person for the session on Day-5 was Dr, Sarika Lohana, who briefed the students about the key points to know about investing. She stated that investing without analysis is like driving on a highway blind folded. Later she began with the concept of Mutual Funds. She went on to explain why investing in Mutual funds is better than investing in direct shares/ equity investments. She stated that in mutual funds the fund manager and their research team choose the shares for us. Whereas in direct share you have to carefully, choose the right share at the righ price. Adding to this the Resource Person stated that tax benefit under section 80C cannot be availed in direct shares whereas in mutual funds tax benefit can be availed.

The sessions conducted by Dr. Sarika Lohana and Anita Saini were very informative, interactive and it was a great success. At the end of the session, a quiz was sent to all the students via email in order to receive the rank and the certificate. The session ended with a Vote of Thanks proposed by Ms. Abigale Rodrigues, Asst Prof in Commerce. The Teachers In-charge for this program were Ms. Preksha Chopdekar, Ms. Swati Bhat, Ms. Lizia Gomes and Ms. Abigale Rodrigues.

Lecture Series on Sports Training

The Department of Physical Education and Sports conducted a ‘10 Hours Lecture Series on Sports Training’ for SDCCE students from 27th December 2021 to 31st December 2021. The session were conducted from 10.00 am to 12.00 pm everyday. Mr. Saurabh Raikar, Instructor in Physical Education conducted these lectures on Google Meet Platform.

Constitution Day 2021

The NSS Unit in collaboration with the Department of Law celebrated Constitution Day and Dr. B R Ambedkar Jayant from 15th to 31st December 2021 by organizing various events for students of B.Com Program, as per instructions received from NSS Regional Directorate, Pune and NSS Cell, Goa University. This was part of the ‘Azadi Ka Amrut Mahotsav’.

The following events were organised

Essay writing competition on the topic “Article 370 and the Implications of Revoking Article 370”. 7 students participated in the competition. The essays were judged by Ms. Prajakta Lolayekar, Assistant Prof, Department of Law.

Pick and Speak (1 minute talk) on a given topic. Here, the students were asked to pick a topic and speak for 1 minute on the same. Topics given were: Freedom of Speech and Expression, Constitution of India, Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, Dowry, Constitutional Rights, Secularism, Democracy, Terrorism, Freedom of Press, Fundamental rights and Fundamental Duties. This activity was organized for the students who have opted for Business Law as an elective. 03 students viz. Ms. Dimple Tavde, Mr. Gaurav Kanekar and Ms. Simran Andra participated in the event.

COURSERA Certificate Course

The Post Graduate Department of Commerce (M.Com) encouraged the students to register and complete any one course of their choice from Coursera or any other online platform as a part of their ISA –III for 10 marks from 2nd November 2021 to 7th January 2022. Mr. Gajanan Haldankar, Convenor of MOOC’s Committee conducts orientation programme every year for the post PG students. He explains the entire process of enrolment and registration on Coursera platform and addresses their queries.

The Faculty of the Department provides guidelines about selecting the course and a list of courses related to the subject area, in order to assist the students in selecting appropriate courses. The students were allowed to choose a course according to their requirement or area of interest.

On completion of the course the students were required to submit the following: module wise details and summary of the course, certificate of completion and a report of the course completed in brief with learning outcomes.

Students benefited from this course as they could enroll for practical self-study courses offered by foreign universities. The video lectures were pre- recorded and hence the students were able to view them at their ease and convenience. The assignments submitted to Coursera were peer reviewed and evaluated by other participants. Students had to answer several tests, quizzes and score maximum marks to qualify for the final certificate. This made the course challenging for some participants.

The teacher incharge for this activity was Ms. Pooja Shanbhag, Asst. Prof Dept of Commerce. 26 students successfully completed the course and submitted the report. They were also asked to do a brief presentation on the same and share their learning experience, difficulties and challenges faced in completion of the course with their classmates. In order to assess the learning outcomes and evaluate the seriousness of this activity, Viva was also conducted where in students had to answer few questions regarding the course completed. The students provided positive feedback regarding the course.

Online Certificate Course in Fundamentals of Digital Marketing

The BBA(Financial Services) Department encouraged the SYBBA(Financial Services) students to pursue an online certificate course titled ‘Fundamentals of Digital Marketing’ from 15.11.2021 to 03.01.2022. The online certificate course comprised of 26 modules spread across 40 hours and is accredited by the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB), New York. It was offered by Google through their ‘Google Digital Unlocked’ platform. The content of the online certificate course was offered in the form of bite-sized video tutorials followed by a quick quiz.

The online certificate course was offered to the students with the following objectives, viz., to enhance the knowledge of the students by focusing on the related practical aspects, to add value to the students’ undergraduate degree and to expand the employment opportunities for students. 22 students (07 males and 15 females) from SY BBA(FS) A and B class respectively, completed the online certificate course after passing an online examination bearing 40 questions. They received e-certificates from Google Digital Unlocked on their registered e-mail IDs. Mr. Mayuresh Adsul, Assistant Professor in Commerce, BBA(FS) Department was the  faculty in-chargefor the same.
