The Department of Computer Science in association with The Magic Data, Mumbai organized a workshop on “Creative Thinking” of 30-hour duration from 14th to 19th March 2022 for 37 advanced learners of SY B.Voc.(ST), BCA, B.Com., BBA(FS) and M.Com.
The workshop was conducted in Ramdas Mallya Smart classroom from 9.00 am to 3.00 pm during the above mentioned dates. The objectives of this workshop were two-folds:
To impart learning of Creative Thinking Course in interactive, activity based and conducive manner to the SY BVoc(ST) students
To provide opportunity to the advance-learners of other programmes to learn and explore range of creative thinking methods, tools and techniques to generate ideas and solve problems.
The Resource Person for the workshop was Ms. Janhavi Dani, Corporate Soft Skills Trainer and a certified NLP Master Practitioner. She was working as HR Generalist, Corporate Talent Acquisition Specialist, Business Analyst and Business Skills Facilitator at TCS.
Day 1– workshop began at 9.30 am with the welcome address by the principal, Dr. Prita D. Mallya followed by the introduction of the Resource Person by Mr. Sumit Kumar, HOD – Computer Science. Ms. Janhavi Dani kicked-off the workshop with the introduction of the participants in a creative way. Participants were asked to introduce themselves by drawing something that will best describe them and were asked to explain why they think so. This activity was followed by group formation, sharing of the real-life instances when participants exhibited creativity and were encouraged to share their stories.
Day 2– commenced with the activities on creative thinking followed by the identification of reasons which stops anyone from being creative. She introduced breathing & relaxing exercises, meditation, NLP (Neuro-linguistic Programming) – a pseudoscientific approach to communication, personal development, through various activities. The meditation definitely saw a visible change in the participants’ state of mind. Students agreed that they feel much calmer and relaxed. They were asked to think of an achievable goal followed by writing down the steps to achieve it and were asked to analyze the identified steps critically. She further introduced the concepts of lateral thinking, vertical thinking and how mind operates through patterns. The session concluded with the formation of six new groups, and sharing of stories when lateral thinking was put in use by the participants.
Day 3 – two new techniques of lateral thinking, namely, generation of alternatives and challenging the assumption, were introduced and were explained to the participants through activities. They were asked to discuss among their group members to conceptualize a creative project and present the same on the next day. They were also asked to create useful and creative model.
Day 4– began with the introduction of the remaining techniques of lateral thinking, viz. suspended judgment, design, innovation, dominant idea & crucial factor. Participants were asked to draw and sketch their dream college on the chart paper and to present it. Resource Person also explained the concepts of ‘Six Thinking Hats’ and ‘Mind mapping’ through various activities by outlining their pros and cons.
Day 5 – all the groups were asked to present their creative models along with the explanation on the techniques used while conceptualizing and designing these models. Lastly, a Valedictory function was organized wherein Principal Dr. Prita D. Mallya thanked the Resource Person and presented a memento as a token of appreciation. Post-Valedictory, an assessment was conducted by the Resource Person to quantify the learning of the workshop. The workshop concluded after the assessment process on the thanking note.
The overall feedback for the session was positive and quite encouraging. Participants suggested to organize similar workshop in the area of Time and Stress management, Goal planning, Teamwork and leadership. Approximately, 65% students have mentioned that this workshop has met their expectation level and 70% has mentioned that their thinking ability has improved significantly. This workshop was well received by the students and e-certificates were issued to them post-completion. Inaugural session was compered by Assistant Professor Ms. Sweta Verenkar and session and Valedictory function was compered by Assistant Professor Ms. Nishigandha Naik.
