Damodar USTAV 2022 Dance Competition

The Students Council of the College organised Damodar USTAV on 12th May 2022 10:30 am to 12:00 pm.  There were 3 off stage events Mainly Wordsworth, Floral Rangoli and Face Painting and three on- stage events Dance, Fashion Show and Mr and Mrs Damodar.

The Dance Competition was on-stage event. It started at 10.30 in the Multipurpose hall. The dance competition was into two categories: Solo and Group.  Students participated with huge numbers in the Dance competition. There were various dance forms performed by students. The judges for the event were Ms Trisha Vadil Assistant Professor in Commerce and Ms Rama Borkar Assistant Professor in Computer Science.

Ms Ashwini Devari Assistant Professor in Financial Service and Sneha Prabhudessai were teachers in charge for the event Ms Saniya Kadar and Joshita Fernandes student from SYBBA(FS) and FYBBA(FS)  were in charge for the competition.

Life Skills Session on “Creativity, Curiosity and Innovation”

As a part of 21st Century Life Skills Certificate Course, a session on the topic “Creativity, Curiosity and Innovation” was conducted by the Life Skills Committee of the College for the First Year B.Com and BBA (Financial Services) students on11th May 2022 from 03:30 p.m via Google Meet.

The main objective of the session is to help the students to recognize their potential in contributing to an environment that fosters creativity and innovation. The Resource Person for the session was Ms. Janhavi Dani, Corporate Soft Skills Trainer, Pune.

At the onset, Assistant Professor Racheal Goes welcomed the Resource Person and the participants. Ms. Snigdha Bhattacharjee, a student from FY BBA(FS) introduced the Resource Person. Ms. Janhavi Dani started the session by providing an overview on creativity and discussing students’ opinion about the term creativity. Thereafter she elaborated on how creativity helps in perceiving the world in new ways, finding hidden patterns, and generating solution to diverse problems. She further discussed the importance of curiosity in being a precursor to creativity and innovation. Thereafter she asked students’ to share instances where they have projected their creativity. She concluded the session by asking students to meditate during the session so as to clarify their thoughts to foster an environment of creativity and sharing a few tips on how students can practice being creative and innovative.

27 students attended the session. The session ended with a Vote of Thanks delivered by Ms. Meghana Yadav from FY BBA(FS). The session was coordinated by Asst. Prof. Racheal Goes.

GU ART Preparatory Sessions

The Post-Graduate Department in association with the Placement Cell, as a course promotion initiative organized GU-ART online preparatory sessions for the UG students across all Commerce colleges in Goa from 2nd May to 7th May 2022 from 3.30 to 5.00 pm via Google Meet to help them prepare for the upcoming GU-ART exam conducted by Goa University. The objective behind organizing these preparatory sessions was to help students achieve academic success by securing good rank at the GU-ART exam which will help in seeking admission for the Masters Programme.

M.Com Part II students volunteered to engage lectures for the students interested in enrolling for the GU-ART exam. The syllabus was divided among eight students who engaged an one-hour session each covering important concepts from the topic /subject allotted to them. Ms. Abigale Rodrigues, Faculty of PG Dept also engaged a session in the subject of Research Methodology for the students.

Ms. Pooja Shanbhag Asst Prof, PG Dept and Faculty in-charge of this activity engaged a special session for the students on preparing for entrance exams and guiding them for solving MCQs. She covered some of the main concepts and important topics from the syllabus and gave the student an overview of the GU-ART paper pattern. For better understanding, she further discussed the sample question paper and solved a few MCQs with the students to build their confidence. Towards the end she engaged the students in an interactive session wherein students got an opportunity to clear their queries and doubts with respect to answering and appearing for GU-Art. 94 students registered for the same. The sessions were well appreciated by all the registered participants. They were very happy and expressed their gratitude to the faculty in charge for organizing the sessions and requested to have similar sessions in the future.

Soft Skills Training

The Placement Cell organized Soft Skills training program, for the registered students of the Placement Cell across all programs of the College. The program was conducted in two batches through hybrid mode. The first batch was from 20th to 29th April 2022 and the second batch was from 06th to 11th May 2022. The Resource Person for the program was Ms. Caroline Stewart Silva.

Ms. Silva intensively covered a total of five modules, based on Soft Skills, which were, a) Art of communication and listening skills, b) Conflict management, c) Teamwork and interpersonal skills, d) Time management, and e) Business/ email/ social media etiquette, for the training period.

The introductory session – Module 1, encompassed the Art of Communication and Listening Skills, wherein topics like the meaning of verbal and para verbal communication, 7 C’s of communication, process, barriers, and tips to overcome such barriers were extensively taught to the students. Students were also enlightened by the Resource Person’s expert knowledge of listening skills, wherein she stressed the importance of active listening.

The following session – Module 2 was on Conflict Management, wherein Ms. Silva discussed the meaning, types, and reasons for conflicts. She stressed the techniques to manage conflicts like competing, accommodating, avoiding, collaborating and compromising. She also emphasized the importance of the role of attitude and concluded her session on the module with the help of two case studies.

The next session – Module 3 was pertaining to Teamwork and Interpersonal Skills. Ms. Silva began the session by introducing the concept of interpersonal skills and went on to discuss the tips to improve interpersonal skills like having empathy, not complaining, asking for yourself, being open, being tactful, etc. She also emphasized the importance of teamwork and the stages of team management – forming, storming, norming, and performing. Ms. Silva tactfully conducted this session with the help of some activities.

The subsequent session – Module 4 was on Time management. Ms. Silva began the session with an activity, wherein she managed to highlight the significance of time management. She stressed areas such as time versus task management, misconceptions about time management, and the importance of doing things right, not fast. She also shared tips on things to be done in situations when there are too many tasks on schedule, like assigning a time limit to each task, do not procrastinate, having a direction, organizing, recording daily activities, etc. She concluded the session by sharing an inspirational story on time management.

The final session – Module 5 encompassed Business/ Email/ Social Media Etiquettes. Ms. Silva, in this session, stressed the Do’s and Don’t s, in business, while composing and writing an email, and different types of etiquette, like punctuality, business card protocols, email etiquette, meeting etiquette, dining etiquette, online etiquette (netiquette), etc. She also shared useful tips on dressing for a business meeting, an interview, and the like. She concluded this session with a quiz.

87 registered students of the Placement Cell across all programs attended the training. The entire training by Ms. Caroline Stewart Silva was highly interactive and enriching, which has undeniably provided immense insights into the required soft skills.

The session was conducted by the Asst. Prof. Lizette D’Costa, Faculty in charge, Placement Cell, under the guidance of Dr. Maithili Naik, Convenor, Placement Cell.

‘30-Hours Certificate Course in Practical Aspects of Business Accounting, Income Tax and Stock Market Operations’

The Post-Graduate Department of Commerce (M.Com) organized a 30-Hours Certificate Course in ‘Practical Aspects of Business Accounting, Income Tax and Stock Market Operations’ for the M.Com students, in order to combine the theoretical knowledge of the subjects with the practical aspects of it. The sessions were held from 06th April 2022 – 07th May 2022 in hybrid mode.

The first Speaker CA Dhanashree Prabhukhanolkar covered the topics – maintaining tally for small and medium businesses, Income tax exemptions and deductions for individuals, TDS, advance tax and filing of ITR 1, Practical uses of various types of ITR, Advanced Excel and GST registration, return filing and invoicing.

The second Speaker Mr Purv Shah BSE Trainer covered the topics – Basics of portfolio management and strategies, Exchange traded derivatives, Comparison between investment and trading in equities, technical and fundamental analysis for beginners, asset classes and their cross comparison.

Each speaker was allotted 15-hours each for their topic and discussion. It was an informative and insightful course and the students also provided a positive feedback about the course.  50 students attended the course. The students were also awarded certificates on successful completion of the course.

VLogIT

The Department of Computer Science, under Techtrendz organized “VLogIT” for BCA and BVoc.(ST) Students from 9th April to 2nd May 2022.The competition was declared open on 9th April 2022 and students were informed about the rules and regulations of the competitions through a poster cum brochure designed by Sam Pinto, student of SYBCA B. The participants had to create a video log on College Life.

Two participants – Delwyn Fernandes from SYBCA A and Yash Korgaonkar from SYB.Voc(ST) A submitted their videos via a Google form. The videos were judged on relevance to the theme, creativity and overall presentation skills. The judging was done by Mrs. Sweta P. Shet Verenkar, Asst. Prof. In Computer Science.

The Organisers for the event were students of SYBCA B, Prinson Fernandes and Sam Pinto along with the Faculty incharge Mrs. Sweta P. Shet Verenkar and Ms. Rajlaxmi Nair, TechTrendz Coordinator.

Mr. Delwyn Fernandes, SYBCA A student was declared as the winner of VLogIT . The organisers felt the need to re-organise a similar event for more participation. The students got a platform to showcase their skills in an innovative and confident way through the video log. Participants and winners were congratulated by the Department.

Poster Making and Presentation

The Post-Graduate Department of the College organized a PG Club activity – ‘Poster Making and Presentation’ for the students of M.Com Part I and Part II on 29th April 2022 from 11.00 am to 12.30 pm. The topic for the presentation was Legislative Framework of Corporate Governance in India: Listed Companies, Unlisted Companies, PSUs, Banks and Insurance Companies. The objective behind organising this activity was to bring out the creative expression in the students and to gauge their knowledge and awareness on legislative framework in the area of corporate governance in India. This activity will help in measuring the attainment of CO1 and CO2 in the subject of Corporate Governance and Corporate Social Responsibility in semester IV for the accounting and finance students.

The students were exposed to various mechanisms of corporate governance and regulatory practices followed by different institutions in India. They had to assess the strength and role of such regulatory practices on the working of a corporate entity and discuss its importance to an investor and general stakeholders at large. They will also develop an understanding of the importance of good governance practices for listed companies and the negative impact of ineffective governance practices for corporate houses and other institutions.

In addition to this, the students explained and highlighted various corporate scams and scandals in relation to the topic assigned to them to support their explanation. The Part II students presented the poster to the Part I students and explained the topics very briefly. It was a very informative and an interactive session for all the participants.  50 students attended the same. The entire activity was planned and implemented under the supervision and guidance of the subject faculty Ms. Pooja Shanbhag, Assistant Professor in Commerce, PG Department.

Guest Lecture on “Careers in Banking: Scope, Growth and Job Opportunities”

The Department of Economics & Banking organized a Guest lecture on “Careers in Banking: Scope, Growth and Job Opportunities” for students on 29th April, 2022. The objective of the session was to highlight the various job opportunities in the banking sector.

The Resource Person was Mrs. Nidhi Vasta, Senior Manager, Central Bank of India, Margao, Goa. On the onset Dr. Lira Menezes Gama, HOD Department of Economics & Banking welcomed the Resource Person. Ms. Hazel student of TY B.Com D introduced the Resource Person. Mrs. Vatsa. The Speaker emphasized on the different opportunities available to freshers. Also highlighted the Growth ladder in banking job, gave information on various exams related to banking and also listed the opportunities available in Banking sector.

The Guest Lecture was compered by Ms. Muskan Baig TY B.Com. was delivered by Ms. Shruti Naik FY B.Com B proposed the Vote of Thanks. The Guest Lecture was coordinated by Asst. Prof Lizette D’Costa, Asst. Prof Ms. Pretty Louiza Pereira and Asst. Prof Stesa Pereira.

Participation in Elocution competition

Four students, viz.  Shreya Pradeep Revankar from T.Y B.Com A, Dimple Abith Tavde from S.Y B.Com A, Anisha Ganapati Nadkarni from S.Y B.Com C and Rohit Tulsidas Raikar from SY B.Com-B  participated in the Elocution competition organized by The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) Goa Branch on 26th April 2022. The competition commenced at 10.30 A.M at ICAI Goa branch Panjim with a total of 8 Participants. The topics for the competition were (1) Hard Work Vs Smart Work (2) Importance of Artificial Intelligence in Education (3) Role of Women as Freedom Fighter in Independence (4) Fulfilling our Dreams- Be Independent and (5) Glorious History – Our Culture & Achievements. The judges for the competition were C.A Ulhas Dhumaskar, C.A Suvarna Pai & C.A Vishal Patel.  Students expressed their views and ideas on the selected topics. The competition ended at around 1.00 p.m. The students were guided and accompanied by Assistant Professor Gajanan B. Haldankar.

IIP Session-3 on ‘Careers in CFA & FRM’

The PG Department of Commerce (M.Com) in association with the Career and Placement cell of the College organized an IIP Session-3 on the topic ‘Careers in CFA & FRM’ for the M.Com students on 23rd April 2022 from 11:15 to 12.15 pm in Classroom no. 22 (M.Com Building). The Resource Person for the session was Mr. Murrad Beigh, Career Counselor and Co-founder, Finladder.

Asst. Prof. Ms. Abigale Rodrigues, welcomed the Resource Personfollowed by his introduction by Mr. Sarthak Faldesai, a student of M.Com Part-I. Mr. Beigh took over the session by creating awareness about the importance of career planning and the job opportunities open to the students after the completion of their courses. He went on to explain to the students the importance of CFA & FRM in today’s businesses. He also explained the modules and levels to be cleared for each exam and the job opportunities in different sectors worldwide after completion of each module.

By the end of the webinar the Speaker addressed the queries raised by the students with regards to the process of admission to the modules, the age limit and the organizations offering the course and the placement programs offered by them. The students found the session very informative and beneficial.  42 participants attended the session. The session ended at 12:10 pm, with a Vote of Thanks proposed by Ms. Joshila Goes, a student of M.Com Part –I.
