Temple Cleanliness Drive

The NSS Unit of the College conducted a cleanliness drive near the surroundings of Maruti Mandir in Comba on 28th October 2022. 17 NSS volunteers participated in the activity from 12.15 to 1.30 p.m. The volunteers collected all the plastic and paper waste from the surroundings of Maruti Mandir. The activity was coordinated by NSS PO In charge Gajanan B. Haldankar and NSS PO Sanjay Velip.

Fedena Orientation for First Year Students of Computer Science Department

The Department of Computer Science conducted a session on Fedena Orientation for FY Computer Science students on 28th October 2022 from 11.30 am onwards in their respective classrooms. 84 students from FY BCA and FY B.Voc(ST) attended the session. The session was engaged by Mr. Allan Braganca, Lab Instructor, Computer Science Department. He demonstrated to the students about the Fedena login, checking the attendance and marks for each course. He also explained the other features available in Fedena such as checking their timetable, profile, etc. The session ended by answering queries of the students. The faculty in-charge for this session was Ms. Rajlaxmi S. Nair. The session was guided by Mr. Sumit Kumar, HoD, Computer Science.

Everything About Podcast

The Readers’ Club organised a session on ‘Everything About Podcast’ on 28th October, 2022 from 12:15 – 1:15 pm. The session was attended by 15 Readers’ Club members and 10 FYB.Com students. The Resource Person for the session was a student Mr. Vishal Kubawat from FYB.Com-B.

Mr. Vishal introduced the concept of podcastvia a PowerPoint presentation. He elaborated with examples the types of podcasts and platform on which one can get access to podcasts by famous podcasters. He also suggested a few podcasts that the audience can listen to from market stories to books, sports and motivation. Next, he showed the steps involved in making a podcast, devices required to record a podcast and platforms to publish one. Lastly with the help of a video he gave tips about what not to do while recording a podcast may it be individual or a group podcast. The session ended with a podcast audio.

This session was conducted with the aim of encouraging an Advanced and informed learner like Mr. Vishal Kubawat who could introduce a new concept to his fellow classmates.  Ms. Samiksha Vengurlekar, Convenor of the Readers’ Club proposed the Vote of Thanks.

56th A. D. Shroff Memorial Elocution Competition

The Department of Economics and Banking organized the 56th AD Shroff Memorial Elocution Competition on 28th October 2022, from 10:00 a.m. onwards. The Forum of Free Enterprise encourages this annual elocution competition and also sponsors the cash prizes and certificates for the same.

The compere for the competition, Ms. Angel Costa from FY B.Com welcomed the audience, provided a brief about the 56th A.D. Shroff Memorial Elocution Competition and introduced the judges for the competition. The Principal Prof. Prita D. Mallya then addressed the gathering. She appreciated the importance of elocution competitions as the popularity of such competitions among students is declining. She also highlighted the role of Forum of Free Enterprise and encouraged the audience to learn more about the Forum.

8 students from the B.Com and M.Com programmes participated and presented their views on the topics. The topics for the elocution competition given by the Forum of Free Enterprise were: “Managing the Economy during a Pandemic”, “Making India a $5 trillion Economy by 2027 (80 Years of Independence)”, “The Changing Role of International Finance in Developing Economies” and “The Menace of Increasing Cyber Crimes and Solution”. A panel of three judges from the College namely Ms. Samiksha Vengurlekar, Assistant Professor in English, Ms. Sheryl Sanches, Assistant Professor in Commerce and Mr. Wendham Gray, Assistant Professor in Computer Science judged the competition based on content, presentation and elocution.

Assistant Professor Ms. Stesa Pereira, the teacher in charge of the competition declared the results which were as follows:

1st Prize: Dimple Tavde, TY B.Com (Certificate and a Cash Prize of Rs 2500/-)

2nd Prize: Simran Andra, TY B.Com (Certificate and a Cash Prize of Rs 1500/-)

“Practical aspects of Income Tax Return filing”

The Department of Management organized a Guest lecture on the topic “Practical aspects of Income Tax Return filing” for the students of SY BBA(FS) on 27th October 2022. The Resource Persons for the session were Ms. Rizwani Vaz, Accountant and Mr. Sahil Phadte, Accountant. The objective of the session was to provide practical knowledge about filing Income Tax Return on the Income Tax portal. 62 students attended the session.

Ms. Radhika Naik, student of SY BBA(FS) welcomed and introduced the Speakers. The Resource Person Mr. Sahil Phadte, began with the session by briefing about the different heads of Income, the types of ITR’s and its applicability and the importance of choosing the right ITR form. The speaker also spoke why it is important to file Income Tax Returns, and the consequences faced for not filing return on time.

The second Resource Person, Ms. Rizwani Vaz took over the session by displaying the interface of the Income Tax portal. She exhibited the steps involved in filing the Income Tax Return on the portal and explained the documents required for filing returns, different forms linked to Income Tax, deductions available for salaried individual etc. The speaker also emphasized on the amendment in the new tax regime with respect to the Tax slab rates and computation of income.

At the end of the session, they spoke about different ways to reduce tax liability, with the help of case studies. The speakers of the session addressed the queries raised by the students. The session ended with the Vote of Thanks proposed by Ms. Seeham Baig, a student of SY BBA(FS). The teachers in charge for the session were Asst. Prof. Cinola Vaz and Asst. Prof. Vinaya Kirloskar.

“Body Language”

The FY Certificate Course Committee had organized a session on “Body Language” as a part of Certificate Course in 21st century Life Skills for the students of FY BBA(FS) and FY BBA on 27th October 2022 from 12:15 to 1:30 pm. The Resource Person was Ms. Kanan Tandi, Co-founder of CogniCue, Instructor in Body language and Non-verbal Communication. The objective of the session was to help the students improve their body language and use nonverbal communication, that could help them to connect better with others, and build stronger, more rewarding relationships. A total of 58 students attended the program.

Mr. Sahil Talauliker a student from FY BBA(FS)-A welcomed and introduced the Resource Person. The Resource Person took over the session by explaining about the importance of body language, how body language can help us understand others and ourselves. The speaker elucidated the different features of body language such as facial expressions, posture, proximity, eye contact, voice and gestures with the help of examples. The speaker also provided information about how we can use body language to express emotions or intentions. The Resource Person also spoke about how to improve nonverbal communication that could help us to achieve greater success in life.

The speaker at the end of the session addressed the queries raised by the students. The session ended with the Vote of Thanks proposed by Ms. Nitya Bhat, a student of FY BBA(FS)-A.

Fieldtrip to Tanshikar Spice Farm

As a part of the curriculum, the Department of Economics & Banking organized a field trip for the students of FY B.Com A & D, to Tanshikar Spice Farm, Netravali, Sanguem, on 22nd October 2022. The students were accompanied by Asst. Prof. Ms. Pretty Pereira and Ms. Lizette D’Costa. The objective of the field trip was to provide students with exposure to production techniques utilized in organic farming, as well as familiarize them with the type of competition faced in the market with regard to such farm products.

The owner of the farm Mr. Chinmay Tanshikar meticulously began by taking the students around and briefing them about each spice produced at the farm. He started with coffee and spoke about how initially there was a monopoly in producing coffee. Next, he showed them nutmeg – mace and informed the students that their farm was the largest producer of nutmeg in Goa. He then moved on to vanilla and spoke about a diversified portfolio for investments through vanilla, which is highly labour-intensive in production. He informed students of three types of vanilla trees being planted – female, male, and bisexual trees. In circumstances when there is no male or female produce, bisexual trees become a backup plan. He also spoke elaborately on spices like bay leaf, cinnamon, chillies, pepper (black and white), cocoa beans, cardamom, turmeric, etc., which are all grown plentifully on the farm and also stressed from where each of the spices originated and the demand of each of them in the market. He went on to explain certain ways of doing organic farming, wherein they depend on the droppings of the earthworm, and natural farming from the waste of trees which act as fertilizers as they provide favourable conditions for earthworms. He further enlightened the students on four signs of a farm being organic i) white fungus growing on trees – a sign of 100% oxygen, ii) green moss, iii) butterflies, and iv) growth of ferns. Lastly, he displayed and elaborated on the task of beekeeping.

The specialty of Tanshikar’s organic farm is the variety of genuine spices grown on 25 acres of land over the last 20 years. In 2016, Tanshikar Spice Farm received the Best Organic Farmer Award from the Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi through Shri Shri Agri Institute. Mr. Tanshikar’s dedication to his farm is commendable and the knowledge shared with the students made the field trip worthwhile. On the whole, the visit to the spice farm was fulfilling and enriching

A total of 72 students attended the field trip.

‘Entrepreneurship and challenges faced to build a startup’

The P. G. Department of Commerce (M.Com) organized a Guest session on Entrepreneurship and challenges faced to build a startup on 22nd October 2022. The Resource Person was Mr. Vijay Yadav, CEO at Coastal Beverages LLP, Bicholim. The objective of the session was to encourage students towards entrepreneurship and to create awareness about various aspects and challenges faced by young entrepreneurs. 47 M.Com students attended the session. Mr. Myron Pereira, Asst. Professor in Commerce welcomed the audience. Mr. Vallabh Natekar from M.Com-I introduced the Resource Person, Mr. Vijay Yadav.

Mr. Vijay Yadav commenced the session by sharing his life experiences as an entrepreneur. He spoke about the key requirements needed for a startup. He explained skill based and capital intensive projects which students can take up to build a startup. He added “Skill based project is better for students to start as it does not require much capital”.He showed certain important websites providing information about various schemes and grants offered by the Government of Goa.  He also gave a brief about the detailed Project Report, which is essential to raise funds from banks and investors. He also spoke about the difficulties faced in managing working capital requirements and utilization for capital intensive projects. Mr. Vijay also gave students an opportunity to ask questions related to startup. Finally, he encouraged the students to start their own venture.

It was an informative session, as the students learned about entrepreneurship and the various aspects and issues faced to build a startup. The program concluded at 12.40 pm with a Vote of Thanks proposed by Ms. Shine D’Souza from M.Com-I.

Career Counselling Programme for Budding Entrepreneurs

The Career Cell, Placement Cell, Institution’s Innovation Council, E-Cell & DIC in collaboration with Business Network International (BNI) Foundation organized a Career Counselling Programme for Budding Entrepreneurs for the students of B.Com, BBA(FS) and M.Com on 20th October 2022. The Resource Persons for the session were five successful entrepreneurs in Goa i.e. Mr. Mudit Agarwal – Advaitaa Group, Mr. Arman Bankley – Armines Industries, Mr. Pravin Kakode– Upgrade-Kakode Trading LLP, Ms. Richa Goyal – Happy Earth and Mr. Yogendra Karmali – Shiven Wealth Advisors

Ms. Abha Naik, student from FY B.Com C, the compere for the session, welcomed the Resource Persons and the participants. Dr. Edwin Barreto, Vice-Principal of the College addressed the gathering and encouraged the students to grab the opportunity and gain as much knowledge and wisdom from the dynamic entrepreneurs invited for the session.

Mr. Dishant Naik, student from FY B.Com B, introduced the first Resource Person, Mr. Arman Bankley, Director of Armines Industries- Manufacturing & Exports of Cement Blocks, RMC, Plaster, etc. Mr. Bankley highlighted the importance of having an idea that stands out and encouraged the students to have a definite goal in mind. From his personal experience he relayed the struggles he went through in building his company.

Mr. Shahid Shaikh, student from FY B.Com C introduced the second Resource Person, Mr. Pravin Kakode, Upgrade – Kakode Trading LLP – Manufacturing & Trading of Complete Building Materials. Mr. Kakode, who is an ex-student of the College, shared his struggles right from completing his MBA to setting up his own business with the limited knowledge that he had and a passion to have his own identity.

Ms. Inara Fernandes, student from SY BBA(FS) introduced the third speaker for the day, Mr. Yogendra Karmali, Financial Advisor – Mutual Funds at Shiven Wealth Advisors. Mr Karmali narrated how he stood out in his class by choosing commerce over science and decided to explore the mutual fund sector. Today his company has a good reputation among the wealth advisors and to reach this height he has done extensive study of the Indian markets and analysed the needs, objectives and risk appetites of Indians and especially Goans.

Ms. Milosha Coutinho introduced the fourth speaker, Mr. Mudit Agarwal, Advaitaa Group- Industrial Supplies – Capital Equipments.  Mr. Agarwal is an alumnus of VVM’s Shree Damodar College. He narrated his journey from being a model during his college days to being off-campus due to his active participation in games and to being a successful entrepreneur. He also shared some tips on time management with the students for maintaining a work life balance.

Ms. Nisha Chauhan, student from FY B.Com C introduced the fifth Resource Person for the session, Ms. Richa Goyal, Happy Earth – Eco-friendly Home & Lifestyle Products. She shared her story from being an average housewife to a successful entrepreneur. She explained her idea of using eco-friendly materials for gardening and potting plants and how it led to the creation of a multipurpose material which is used as a house essential for both indoor and outdoor decorations.

At the end of each session the speakers addressed the queries raised by the students. It was an informative and enlightening programme. The students gave positive feedback about the programme. Ms. Looluwa Gundar a student from FY B.Com-C proposed the Vote of Thanks. A total of 112 students attended the session.

Akash Kandil Making Competition

To ring in the festive spirit of Diwali, the Fine Arts Club, Cultural Council of the College organized Akash Kandil Making Competition on 20th October 2022 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the College Multipurpose Hall. The competition was open to all students of the College. The Akash kandils were to be made from eco-friendly material. A total of eighteen teams (36 students) consisting of two students per team participated in the competition. The competition provided a platform for students to display their creative skills and talent. The Akash kandils were judged on the basis of creativity, uniqueness of ideas, and overall presentation.

The first place was bagged by Ms. Belita Ashlyn Pereira and Ms. Livina Da Profiza Vas of TY B. Com (A), the second place went to Ms. Pooja Naik and Ms. Tasmiya Mukashi of FY B.Com (C), while the third place was bagged by Mr. Ashley Souza and Ms. Seedal Fernandes of SY B.Com (B) and (D) respectively.

The judges for the competition were Asst. Prof. Ms. Rajlaxmi Nair and Ms. Divyanka Kanekar.

The Fine Arts Club faculty in charge, Ms. Lizette D’Costa, Assistant Professor, Department of Economics & Banking, coordinated the competition.
