Session on Secondary Data Sources

The RDI Cell, Department of Library and Information Science, and FDP Cell of the College jointly organized a session on the topic “Secondary Data Sources”, on 2nd December 2022 for all the teaching staff of the College. The Resource Person for the session was Dr. Sandhya Krishnan, Assistant Professor, SAMSOE, NMIMS. The Resource Person addressed the participants through video conferencing, while the participants were seated in the Smart classroom where they could see the Resource Person and her presentation. 42 faculties attended.

Vice Principal, Dr. Edwin Barreto welcomed Dr. Sandhya and the participants at the beginning of the session. Ms. Manasi Rege introduced the Resource Person to the participants.

Dr. Sandhya spoke about various online sources of secondary data that the faculties can make use of for their research purpose. She also spoke about different ways in which data is structured, such as cross section, time series, panel data, and pooled cross section data. She then spoke about the differences between primary and secondary data sources before proceeding to the main topic of the session.

She guided the faculty about the data sources for various fields like finance and economics, social sector, government sector, as well as for the worldwide data. For every sector/field, she spoke about the sources that provide data for free and which are paid. She also showed on the screen the details of the actual data that is presently available on the websites of many such sources.

The session was compered by Mr. Shreyas Desai, and Vote of Thanks was proposed by Dr. Maithili Naik. The session was coordinated by Dr. Maithili Naik, Convenor of RDI Cell, Ms. Swati Bhat, Convenor of FDP Cell, and Ms. Manasi Rege, Librarian, Department of Library and Information Sciences. Mr. Shreyas Desai was the teacher in charge for the session.

Alumni Reconnect Series-5 Session on ‘Depository and its Functioning’

The PG Department of Commerce in association with the Alumni Engagement Cell organized Alumni Reconnect Series-5 Session on ‘Depository and its Functioning’ on 1st December 2022. The Resource Persons for the session were Mr. Ameet Pinto and Mr. Sunit Pinto, Partners, SA Financial Services, Margao. The main objective of the session was to provide detailed and practical overview of depository services in India. Ms. Valencia Baptista, Asst. Prof. in Commerce welcomed the audience and gave a brief overview of the importance of the session. Ms. Priyanka Mitra from M.Com Part I introduced the Resource Person.

Mr. Ameet Pinto began the session with an overview of depositories by explaining about the reforms in the Indian securities market with the creation of SEBI, screen-based trading system of NSE, the T+2 Day settlement system and clearing corporations. He also described ‘depository’ and compared it to banks with an example. He explained why dematerialization was necessary and the benefits of availing depository system with the elimination of bad deliveries, forgeries, loss of certificate, reduced paperwork and so much more. He spoke about the services offered by the depository and how to open a Demat account by providing PAN card, Proof of identity, Proof of address and bank details. He also said that there can be up to 3 nominees for the nomination of a Demat account.

Thereafter, Mr. Sunit Pinto took over the session. He showed the audience a video on how the Speed-E system works and also the IDeAS system which is an internet-based Demat account statement. He also provided information about a certificate course for an individual to act as a Depository Participant that is valid for 3 years along with other such courses in this field.

Before the session concluded, there were questions posed by the audience that the Resource Persons answered willingly. The Vote of Thanks was given by Ms. Uma Pandit of M.Com-I and the session ended at 12:40pm. 35 students from M.Com Part I attended the session.

Leader Talks by GMA

Goa Management Association organized Leader Talks on 30th November 2022 at Goa International Centre. The speaker was Mr. Shekhar Sardessai, Founder & Managing Director, Kineco Group. He shared his entrepreneurial journey with the participants. Many College representatives and known industry experts were a part of the event.

The event began at 5.30 pm with Mrs. Sonya Angle, Member of GMA giving a brief introduction of Kineco group and the speaker. Later, the keynote speaker Mr. Shekhar Sardessai took over the stage sharing his journey from being a student to starting up one of Goa’s biggest companies. He spoke about the hurdles and difficulties that came his way during his journey. He also highlighted the importance of having an entrepreneurial mindset to survive in this very competitive industry.  The floor was then open for the Q&A session, where the crowd interacted with the speaker to get valuable knowledge. The event concluded at around 7.30 p.m. with GMA President Mr. Blaise Costabir proposing the Vote of Thanks.

4 students from FY BBA and 1 from TY BBA(FS) attended the event along with faculty members Ms. Cinola Vaz and Mr. Omkar Pawaskar.

Peripatetic Training Programme on Establishment Rules including Reservation in Services

GIPARD organized a 3 Day Peripatetic Training Programme from 28th to 30th November 2022 at GIPARD, Ella Farm, Old Goa. The Resource Persons were Mr. Naresh Bharadwaj, Joint Director, Institute of Secretarial Training & Management, New Delhi and Mr. R. D. Talukdar, Director, Department of Expenditure, GoI.

Mr. Naresh Bharadwaj commenced the session. He explained about framing and amending of RRs. He showed the participants a basic format to be used for this. He also explained importance of Probation on recruitment and different criteria to be considered before confirmation.

After the lunch break Mr. R.D Talukdar explained about principles of Seniority and Departmental Promotion Committee (DPC) Procedures, Checklist for promotion, Types of promotion, Benchmark grades required for every promotion, Zone of Consideration, Formula for calculation of promotion vacancies.

On the 2nd day i.e. 29th November 2022, Mr. Bharadwaj elaborated on Reservation in Services- Constitutional provisions, Article 16 clause and amendments, scrutiny of Caste Certificate and effect of Migration, Conversion, Marriage and Adoption, Post-based Rosters – RK Sabharwal Judgement, writing TALLY on Rosters, etc.

Post lunch Mr. Talukdar engaged a session on Preparation, Maintenance and Operation of Roster, L-Shaped Roster -Operations and Maintenance, Number of Rosters to be maintained and how to calculate percentage of reservation.

On Day 3, i.e. 30th November 2022, Mr. Talukdar explained Horizontal Reservation for Persons with Disabilities and Mr. Bharadwaj explained Reservation in Direct Recruitment – Concept of “Own Merit”, preparation of Merit List and Reservation in Promotion and how backlog vacancies are to be identified and advertised.

The sessions were very informative. After every session, there were exercises given to be solved which included practical workplace examples. Ms. Nikhita Mayekar, Jr. Stenographer attended the training programme.

Master Class Series on “The Dawn of Space Exploration”

The Directorate of Higher Education had initiated a ‘Master Class Series’ for teaching faculties of Universities and Colleges on November 18that Sanskruti Bhavan, Directorate of Art and Culture, Panaji. The purpose of this master class series is to build capacity and to enhance the quality of higher education in the State of Goa through exposure to new thoughts and ideas.

The topic of the Master Class Series Lecture was “The Dawn of Space Exploration” by Dr. James Rhoads and Dr. Sangeeta Malhotra, Astronomers at NASA Goddard Space Flight Centre, USA.

Dr. Sangeeta commenced with the first session on Infrared Eyes on the Cosmic Dawn. She spoke about astronomy, galaxies and infrared light. She explained about Webb specialization in infrared light and shared her experiences and learnings from various projects she has worked on. She said that galaxy seems to be moving away i.e. space stretches and as light travels, it stretches even more.  She mentioned that they are trying to find about Green Peas i.e. local versions of primordial galaxies. She also explained about JWST Telescope. She summarized her session mentioning that JWST is exceeding expectations for finding galaxies at the dawn of light. They are building a wide field mission in the infrared.

The second session was on ‘The dawn of Space exploration or perhaps Space exploration of cosmic dawn’ by Dr. James Rhoads. He spoke on exploration that is enabled by new tools. He also said that they can explore the moon on Mars by sending a space probe but other galaxies are too far away to visit, hence they explore them using telescopes. He covered the various functions of telescope and focused on explaining about the Roman Space Telescope which is expected to be launched in 2026.

The master class series was attended by Dr. Sheetal Arondekar, Mr. Ajinkya Kudtarkar, Mr. Gajanan Haldankar, Mr. Ramkrishna Reddy and Ms. Swati Bhat.

Department of Post-Graduation (M.Com)

The Post-Graduate Department of Commerce conducted buddy teaching sessions for the students of M.Com Part-I and Part-II from 14th to 18th November 2022 before the commencement of Semester End Examination, November 2022.

M.Com students Roshni Khatun, Anand Kumar, Shruti Pai Khot and Kanak Indoria were also engaged in Remedial classes for the students of B.Com on various days after their class hours. Alongside, students were also engaged in peer learning where they sat together in groups for revision and resolving their subject-related doubts.

Awareness Session on Pearson Digital Library

The Department of Library & Information Science in collaboration with IQAC, Research Development & Innovation Cell and Faculty Development Cell of the College organized an awareness session on Pearson Digital Library for all the faculty members of the College on 30th November 2022 from 12:45 p.m to 1:15 p.m in the Reading Room.

Vice-Principal Dr. Edwin Barreto, welcomed the Resource Person Mr. Priyank Vyas, Sr. Territory Manager, Pune & Goa. Ms. Manasi Rege gave a brief introduction of the Resource Person.

Mr. Vyas commenced the session by expressing gratitude towards the Institution for subscribing to Pearson Digital library. He then played the video of the e-library and its features to the faculty members

He demonstrated the features of creating notes, bookmark, downloading the created notes, adding of hyperlink in the text, adding voice note feature etc. He also informed that the e-library is multi device friendly and hence a student or a teacher can get the content last read continued on any device that is being used.

The awareness session was very helpful as the faculty members can inform students about the resource available and help them make the best use of it.

The session was coordinated by Ms. Manasi Rege, Dr. Lina Sadekar, Dr. Maithili Naik and Ms. Swati Bhat. A total of 56 participants attended the same. The session was compered by Mr. Shreyas Desai who also proposed the Vote of Thanks at the end of the session.

Online Training on Footfall Report Generation Functionality in the Library Management System (Koha)

The Directorate of Higher Education(DHE) organized a training session on footfall report generation functionality in the library management system (KOHA) for all the College Library staff members in Goa on November 28th. Through an additional web link, the participants were shown how to Check in and Check Out visitors through the Koha platform.

Report generation of visitors’ footfalls was also demonstrated. The participants raised some queries and doubts on the visitor’s footfalls functionality. All the queries were very well answered.58 participants attended the training session.

Dr. Mahadev Gawas proposed the Vote of Thanks. The Training concluded at 4.30 pm.

4th APETA Summit on “Future Technology in Higher Education: NEP Perspective”

The 4th Asia Pacific Education and Technology Awards & Summit (APETA) 2022 was jointly organized by Education Post, PHP Chambers of Commerce & Industry and Goa Chamber of Commerce & Industry on November 25th at 10.00 am at Hotel Vivanta, Panaji. Besides the awards, APETA had a panel discussion about key challenges of education with technology during NEP implementation.

The inaugural function started at 10.00 am with a welcome address by Dr. Nasir Jamal, Secretary, PHP Chamber of Commerce & Industry. Dr.  Jamal spoke about the impact of the pandemic on the education sector and how in future the technology will have a greater impact on education.

The first session commenced at 10.30 am by first speaker Dr. Sanjay B. Chordiya, Founder President and Chairman of Suryadatta Group of Institutes, Pune. He highlighted about the importance of NEP and explained in detail that with latest technology there will be easy access and equal opportunity for all. Dr. Chordiya also emphasized the importance of internship in students’ life.

The next speaker Mr. Mangurish Pai Raikar, Ex-GCCI president said that Vocational Education will play a very important role in NEP. He said that regular training should be provided to students for enhancing their skills and knowledge. He further added that a proper analysis of students has to be done to identify their skills.

The Chief Guest for the session was Mr. Sarpreet Singh Gill, IAS, Secretary, Department of Education, Government of Goa. He discussed a variety of points related to the education sector, firstly he pointed out that there is lack of connect between entrepreneurship mind and industry and there should be a strong foundation for the same in college education. He further said that school education can be improved by introducing the concept of buddy education, wherein college students will help school students to grow and achieve their goals. He was also of the opinion that education curriculum has to change on regular basis and new concepts like AI, Coding etc. has to be introduced in the syllabus. He said that the mindset of students should be changed from Job seekers to Job givers. The inaugural session concluded at 12.30 p.m.

The panel discussion started at 1.00 pm. The moderator of the discussion was Mr. Vishal Khurma, CEO, Woxsen University, Hyderabad. The other panelists were Dr. Ram Karan Singh, VC, ICFAI Dehradun, Dr. S V Ramana Rao, Director, Siva Sivani Institute of Management, Secunderabad, Dr. Suresh DS, Director, CIT, Gubbi and Dr. Venu Gopal Rao, Professor. The session started with the question on how technology can have an interplay in HE and NEP. Dr. Ram Karan Singh said that since India is a vast country we need to integrate and have an interdisciplinary approach and have University industry linkage; also education should move towards sustainability. Dr. Suresh DS said that physical infrastructure requirement will be greatly reduced however individuals have to be tech-savvy, GER will increase with use of technology. He further added that the best practices of their institute are to have all journals on single platform online for all students to browse, setting up of virtual labs. Dr. Venugopal said that the soul of NEP is to bring the best of potential in all students, however the challenge lies in change management, adapting to technology, frequently changing curriculum etc. Dr. Ramana Rao said we need to find the weak and bright students and try to bridge the gap between them, give grades based on their participation in class. The panel discussion ended at around 2.30 p.m.
