Students Participation at Moneta 2023 Event

An Annual National level Inter-Collegiate event – Moneta 2022 was organised by R. A. Podar College of Commerce and Economics – Autonomous, Mumbai from 17th to 21st January, 2023. One team comprising of 15 students from FY and TY BBA(Financial Services) participated in the event.

This event is the India’s largest financial market-based event. 70 colleges across India had participated in the event, some of the prominent colleges being St Joseph’s University, St Xaviers College, Ahmedabad, Amity University, Jai Hind College, GLS University, B K Birla College, HR College, Narsee Monjee College of Commerce and Economics, NMIMS and Mithibai College, Mumbai.

Students actively participated in all the 15 events. The aim was to motivate students to participate in the national level event and thus, provide a platform for them to showcase and enhance their skills and knowledge. Mr. Saeesh Naik, student of TYBBA(FS) B – was the contingent leader while Ms. Mashuka Rodrigues, student of TYBBA(FS) A – was the Assistant Contingent Leader of the participating team. Mr. Anirudha Munj, Assistant Professor in Management and Ms. Vinaya Kirloskar, Assistant Professor in Commerce were the faculty in charge and accompanied the students to Mumbai and provided necessary guidance.

Day 1 (17th January 2023)

Round 1of 5 events held virtually

Round 1 of 5 events namely Manobhav, Legit, Production Paradox, Big Brand Theory and Explore the Unexplored were held virtually on 17th January 2023. All the participants from Shree Damodar College qualified after Round 1 and they were eligible to participate in the 2nd round which was scheduled offline at the campus of R. A. Podar College.

Day 2 (18th January 2023)

The event began with a talk by eminent personality Kobbi Shoshani, Consul General of Israel. Mr. Kobbi Shoshani spoke on how entrepreneurship has grown all around the world and how making allies is important. This session gave the participants an insight about relations of Israel and India, and how both the countries are similar and different at the same time. This was followed by another session by Mr. Pradeep Ramakrishnan, General Manager at SEBI. Mr. Ramakrishnan underlined the fact that financial institutions around the globe are increasingly responding to stakeholder demands on sustainability and environmental, social and governance (ESG) actions by articulating a corporate purpose and explaining how that purpose will drive their decision making. After the sessions, Round 1 of event such as CEO Challenge, True and Fair View, In Pursuit Dispute, The Corporate Ladder, Bizzare Quiz. Policy Prophecy and Production Paradox began and all students participating in the same qualified the Round 1 and were eligible to proceed for the next round.

Day 3 (19th January 2023)

The event began with talks byeminent personality Tapan Mody, Founder and Creative Director of Yes Yes, Why not? Tapan Mody came up with the MAD Workshop, which provided “Professional Creative Training” for the students attending the session. The second session was by Sougata Basu, Founder of CASHRICH, Fintech Entrepreneurs. It was an interactive session that helped the students explore the various aspects of ‘RISK’ and how they can think systematically to take the right risks. According to Mr. Basu, successful people have often received the benefits of taking calculated risks. The third session was by Amit Malpani, Edelweiss Asset Management-CFO. The speaker shared the cases he encountered while heading the accounts of MNC Companies and how he tackled them.

After the sessions, Round 1 of Management games, Bullring, a Study in Scarlet, Beyond the D-street events commenced.

Day 4 ( 20th January 2023)

The day started with a session by Sanmati Pande, Founder of GROWFITTER App. The speaker shared his journey from being an average student to successfully raisingRs.50 lakhs in exchange for 2 per cent equity of the company in the show Shark Tank India. At the end of the session, he came up with a Health Quiz for all the audience present. Ms. Sakshi Jadhav, student of TY BBA(FS) B won the quiz and was awarded with BOAT earbuds.

Round 2 and 3 were conducted and students participating in the Bizzare Quiz, Manobhav, Policy Prophecy, Explore the Unexplored and Legit qualified for the finals.

There was Panel discussion session by Mr. Rammohan Bhave, CA, CMA, ACCA, CS, Director to several firms, Mr. Amit Agrawal, CFO at AON India, Mr. Rameshwar Wadne, CFO at Vendiman Pvt Ltd on the topic Significance of Strategic Intent & Innovation.

Day 5 (21st Jan 2023)

Finals of the Bizzare Quiz, Manobhav, Policy Prophency, Explore the Unexplored and Legit events were held. Later Ms. Priya Subbaraman, Chief Regulatory Officer, NSE addressed the students on the regulations and policies made for the benefit of the investors and after the session, Valediction ceremony was held.

The results of National level Inter-Collegiate event – Moneta 2023 were declared during the Valedictory and students of TY BBA(FS)- B, Ms. Sanchia Da Costa and Ms. Sejal Kelekar won the 2nd Place for the Research paper presentation which was a part of Explore the Unexplored event. The students were guided by the faculty members of Department of Management.

Eco-Week 4.0

The Economics Club of the Department of Economics & Banking organized Eco-Week 4.0 from 16th to 20th January 2023, from 12:00 p.m. onwards. During the week, one competition was held every day. All the competitions were open to all students of the College. Every event was coordinated by one teacher from the Department of Economics and Banking.

Day 1: Waste to Wealth competition was held on 16th January 2023. The participants were required to make a product out of waste materials that was eco-friendly in nature. A total of ten teams consisting of two students each participated in the competition. The items were judged on the basis of Creativity, Utilization of resources, Artistic composition, Eco-friendly rating, and overall presentation.  The First Place was bagged by Ms. Esha Pai Fondekar and Ms. Avani Naik of TY B.Com (B), Second Place was won by Ms. Zia Fernandes of TY B.Com (C) and Ms. Ananya Prabhu of TY B.Com (B) and Third Place was bagged by Mr. Rishav Kumar and Ms. Tulsi Vishwakarma of FY B.Com (D).

The judges for the competition were Asst. Professors Sushrusha Naik Khandekar and Nishigandha Naik Gaonkar, and the teacher coordinator for the event was Ms. Lizette D’Costa, Assistant Professor, Department of Economics & Banking.

Day 2: On 17th January 2023, the Economics Club organised ‘Analyzers’ – a presentation competition. The participants were given 5 topics to choose from i.e. Impact of Russia – Ukraine war on India, Impact of Covid-19 on Indian Economy, Union Budget 2022, Impact of Demonetisation and Impact of Goods and Services Tax. Participants were required to prepare a presentation on any one of the five given topics, and present it to the judges and the audience. Use of PPT was not mandatory. A total of seven students participated in the competition, and they were judged on the basis of understanding of the topic, content, and presentation. The first place was bagged by Kewell Fernandes of SY B.Com, the second place went to Rohini Kamat of TY B.Com, while the third place was bagged by Esha Pai Fondekar of TY BCom B. The judges for the competition were Asst. Prof. Marjina Shaikh and Asst. Prof. Omkar Pawaskar, and the teacher coordinator for the event was Mr. Shreyas Desai, Assistant Professor, Department of Economics & Banking.

 Day 3: Opinionators – a one minute spot elocution competition was organised on 18th January 2023. 9 participants participated in this competition. On the day of the competition, the Participants had to pick a chit at random, on which their topic was mentioned. 10 minutes were given to all participants to prepare their speech which they then had to deliver before the judges and the audience. The judges were Asst. Prof Ms. Sheryl Sanches and Asst. Prof Ms. Edrea Picardo.  The first place was won by Ms. Dimple Tavde from TY B.Com (A), the second place was won by Ms. Unnati Sarmalkar from FY B.Com (A) and third place was bagged by Mr. Kewell Fernandes SY B.Com (C). The event was coordinated by Asst. Prof Ms. Pretty Louiza Pereira.

Day 4: Eco-Wiz, a quiz competition was held on 19th January 2023. A total of 23 teams of 2 members each participated for the competition. A preliminary written round was held to select 4 teams which participated in the oral quiz rounds. The first prize was won by Ms. Esha Pai Fondekar and Dimple Tavde. Mr. Allen Rebello and Mr. Saeil Toraskar won the second prize, and Ms. Deepika Kholkar and Ms. Swenisha Gomes won the third place. The Event was coordinated by Asst. Prof. Mr. Sanjay Velip.

Day 5: On the last day of Eco-week, that is on 20th January 2023, Eco-Flash, photography competition was held in the smart classroom. The participants had to submit one picture that depicts the primary, secondary or tertiary sector of the Goan economy, along with a brief description of how the photo relates to the theme. In this competition, the first place was won by Mr. Kewell Fernandes, second place by Ms. Esha Pai Fondekar and 3rd place by Ms. Ananya Prabhu. Asst. Prof. Ms. Stesa Pereira was the teacher coordinator for this Competition.

On the same day, the valedictory function for Eco-week 4.0 was held in the smart classroom. Vice Principal, Dr. Edwin Barreto and Head, Department of Economics and Banking, Dr. Lira M. Gama distributed prizes to all the winners. Ms. Esha Pai Fondekar was awarded the trophy for Economist of the Year. Dr. Lira M. Gama proposed the Vote of Thanks. 76 students from various streams participated in the event.

Khanna Mela

The Department of Management organized Khanna Mela for the students of FYBBA as a part of Managerial Economics curriculum under ISA II. The said activity was organized on 16th January 2023 from 10a.m. onwards. The entire class of 29 students were a part of Khanna Mela. The objective of the activity was to apply Managerial Economics in real life. After conducting the activity, the students learnt about the practical application of demand, supply, forms of market structure, profit, loss etc.

The class was divided into 2 groups. Each group sold different types of snacks and drinks. The food items  sold were Donuts, Croquettes, Sweet corn chat, Sandwiches, Walnut Brownies, Blueberry Lemonade, Lemonade and Soft drinks.

The activity was conducted within the College premises and the profit gained was equally distributed among the students. Through Khanna Mela, students learnt to use scarce resources efficiently and to supply the commodities for which there was demand.

After the activity was complete, students were asked to submit a report mentioning the costsincurred, revenue earned, profit made, resources required, type of profit made and the type of market structure experienced. The faculty in charge for Khanna Mela was Asst. Prof. Karuna Sanjiv Ballikar.

Open House for FY, SY BCA and all B.Voc(ST) students

The Student Welfare Cell in association with the Examination Committee of the College organized an Open House for the students of the Computer Science Department on 14th January for the FY and SY BCA students, 21st January for the FY and SY B.Voc.(ST) students and 24th January for the TY B.Voc(ST) students in their respective classrooms from 8.30am to 12.30pm.

The Open House Day was scheduled to provide a platform for the mentors to interact with their mentees’ parents and to hand over the Odd Semester Examination marksheets to them. During this meet, the mentors discussed the progress of their mentees with regard to academics, participation in various activities, areas for improvement, importance of attendance etc.

Parents were briefed on the activities conducted by the Student Welfare Cell, such as remedial classes, peer learning activities etc. Mentors also highlighted the mentoring meets scheduled twice a month for their mentees where they could discuss any issues with them. Parents were also informed about the various activities organized by the College for the growth and development of students.

Overall, this activity was a success with great feedback from the students’ parents. The parents thanked the faculty members of the College for giving them an opportunity to interact with the teachers for the progress and development of the students.

Open House for FY and SY B.Com Students

The Examination committee in association with the Student Welfare Cell of the College, organized an Open House day for all the students of FY and SY B.Com on 14th January 2023 from 8.30am – 12.30pm. The objective behind having the open house day was to provide an opportunity to the mentors to interact with the parents of their mentees, brief them about the student’s progress and behaviour in the College campus and hand over the marksheets of the Odd Semester Examination to them in person. The mentors discussed their mentees’ academic performance with the parents and suggested ways for improvement in the future examinations. The mentors further informed the parents about the various activities and events organized by the College for the holistic growth and development of the students. The mentors briefed parents on the mentoring meetings and sessions regularly conducted by the Student Welfare Cell.

Overall it was a successful activity with overwhelming response received from the parents. The parents thanked the faculty members for such a thoughtful initiative and appreciated the efforts of the College in organizing the same.

Inaugural of E-Waste Collection Drive

Lions International in association with Vasundhara (Green Club) of the College and Union Environment Ministry organized the Inaugural of E-waste collection drive on 14th January 2023 in Hall 2 of the Central Block of the College. 101 students across the B.Com and BBA programmes were a part of the Inaugural function. The objective of this function was to inaugurate the World’s Biggest E-Waste Collection Drive from 13th January to 13th February 2023 by Lions International thus embarking on a month-long awareness and collection campaign.

The session commenced with Lion Jaiamol Naik, the E-Waste coordinator for Vasco region addressing the gathering and elaborating about the e-waste collection drive. The dignitaries on the dais including Chief Guest Shri. Nilesh Cabral, Honorable Minister of Public Works Department, Law and Judiciary, Environment and Legislative Affairs then proceeded to inaugurate the function by watering a sapling symbolizing hope, peace and growth. Lion Adrian Torres, the e-waste District Coordinator highlighted the harmful effects of e-waste through a video presentation and encouraged everyone to whole heartedly participate in the e-waste drive.

The Principal of the College Prof. Prita D. Mallya, then emphasized on finding solutions to problems and specifically solving the problem of e-waste through adequate disposal solutions. She also spoke about the benefit of launching drives like these at educational campuses as the entire community tends to benefit due to the large number of students that are a part of the institution. The Guest of Honor PMJF Lion Erle Brito, the First Vice District Governor of Lions International also addressed the audience and focused on how the youth can spread the message to create awareness and make sure e-waste goes through the right process of disposal.

The Chief Guest Shri. Nilesh Cabral spoke about how it is the responsibility of each citizen and each student to make Goa a garbage free state. Each individual can influence houses around and encourage the disposal of e-waste responsibly. He also requested the students to be a part of the drive and visit at least 10 households around to create awareness on the disposal of e-waste at their individual level.

The Post Graduate Department of Commerce (M.Com) conducted Course Promotion of M.Com and PGDFT Programmes and GU-ART Orientation for TYB.Com students of our College as well as four other colleges. The main objective of this activity was to promote the M.Com and PGDFT Courses offered at Shree Damodar College as well as to provide necessary guidance to the TYB.Com students with respect to application and preparation for GU-ART Exam. The Course promotion and GUART Orientation for the TYB.Com students of Shree Damodar College was conducted on 18th and 19th January 2023 between 10.00 am to 11.00 am.

The faculty members briefed the students about the M.Com and the PGDFT programmes offered at Shree Damodar College of Commerce & Economics. They covered various aspects of the programmes such as course objectives, structure, number of seats and specialization available in M.Com. They also briefed the students about the results, previous students performance, rankers at Goa University, placements, infrastructure, library and laboratory facilities, various departmental activities conducted such as guest lectures, Industry Interaction Program, Research Paper Presentations, Debate Club, Gurukul, Practical assignments, flipped classroom teaching, study tours and industrial visits. They also mentioned about the various career opportunities available after pursuing the programmes.

Thereafter, the students were briefed about GU-ART i.e. the Goa University Admission Ranking Test, a prerequisite to obtain admission to Post Graduate programs. The faculty members guided the students with respect to last date of registration of Round 1 of GU-ART, Question paper pattern, syllabus and evaluation scheme. They also demonstrated the procedure of applying for GUART as well as informed the students about the GU-ART preparatory training scheduled from 30th January to 10th February 2023.

The students clarified their doubts and also showed an inclination to answer the GU-ART exam and apply for the M.Com and PGDFT programmes.

Awareness Programme on E-Resources of National Digital Library of India (NDLI)

The NDLI Club in collaboration with Department of Library & Information Science, Faculty Development Cell and Research & Development Cell, organized an online awareness session for faculty and students of all the Programmes on E-Resources of National Digital Library of India (NDLI) on 10th January 2023. This webinar was conducted on Google Meet platform. The Resource Person was Mrs. Manali Sengupta, Outreach Manager, NDLI, IIT Kharagpur. Dr. Anjali Sajilal, B.Com Programme Coordinator welcomed the gathering and Mrs. Manasi D. Rege, President of NDLI Club introduced the Resource Person.

The Resource Person highlighted all the E-resources available on NDLI Portal and explained how to search and access these E-resources. She also informed how to switch to the language of your need, search the topic of your interest in the search box, use various filters to get the focused results, go to browse option available on the home page, how to do advanced search, use of small icons for search, etc. Mrs. Manali Sengupta also explained the detailed activities of NDLI Club and provided information on how to conduct Club activities. A minimum of 6 club activities is a mandate for the renewal of the NDLI Club membership. Activities such as Awareness sessions on NDLI Portal, Talks, Lecture series, Book exhibitions, Books Donation to some Libraries or organization, Competitions, any books/ Reading related activities, Book Reviews, Quiz Competition, Essay Competition etc to be conducted by the NDLI.

336 participants attended the webinar, of which 50 were faculty members and 286 were students from all the programmes. Mr. Shreyas Desai proposed the Vote of Thanks.

A Stately Golden Jubilee Reunion Celebrated at Shree Damodar College

As a part of its Golden Jubilee Celebrations, the Ex-Students’ Association organised a grand Golden Jubilee Reunion on 7th January 2023 from 4:30 pm onwards at Shree Damodar Educational Campus.

Over 1,500 former students and 50 ex-staff members had a gala time as they came together to experience the joyful moment of reuniting with their old friends and rekindle the love for the Alma-mater.

The event was hosted by the popular voices of Goa, RJ Shakuntala Bharne and RJ Joed Almeida.  Attendees enjoyed the evening filled with events like a cultural program, fashion show, skit, dance and singing putup by the current as well as the enthusiastic alumni of the College. The highlight of the event were the performances by the musical stalwarts such as Lorna, the Nightingale of Goa, performing along with the Sky-High Band and another elegant performance by the Fado queen, Sonia Sirsat.

The guests could also reminisce about their college days through a short video- a compilation of old photographs, which was screened amid much fanfare. They spent memorable moments at the stalls put up by vendors, which included gaming stalls, food stalls and accessories stalls. This also provided the vendors a platform to market their products.

Speaking at the event, Prof. and Principal Prita Mallya remembered the contributions of the founder members and the ex-teachers to this pioneering institute and expressed her gratitude. The President of Vidya Vikas Mandal Mr. Nitin Kunkolienkar shared his vision of making the College the best Commerce College in India and requested the cooperation of the alumni in achieving this dream.  The alumni also got an opportunity to interact with the current students and the teachers and learn a few things or two from each other’s experiences.

The evening came to an end with the audience swaying to the live and amazing music played by DJ Navin. The event was coordinated and organized by Dr. Edwin Barreto, Vice Principal of the College.
