Cosmocrat 8.0

FY BBA students of the Department of Management participated in Cosmocrat 8.0 organized by the BBA Department of Don Bosco College, Panjim with the aim to provide a platform for students to showcase their entrepreneurial skills and equip themselves with the know-how to compete in the ever-changing world of business. The event was for two days i.e. 3rd and 4th February 2023.

Day 1 of the event consisted of Business Talks with CEOs of different companies sharing their valuable insights on topics like HRM by Seeya Dalvi, Sales by Pavan Agni, Manufacturing by Blaise Costabir, Marketing by Rina Barreto Shankar and Startups by D.S. Prashant.

The purpose of the panel discussion was to focus on Change management & how experts can work with executives and functional managers. To identify and embrace change as well as understand how they approach changes and adopt technology to improve productivity and operations in day-to-day activities.

Day 2 was packed with tough entrepreneurial challenges. Each team was allotted a company name as their team’s name. There were total of nine sub-events out of which BBA students of our College won two events namely, ‘The ice-breaker’ which was a pre-event where the participants were asked to make a reel based on the concept of the team names allotted to them and introduce themselves in a creative way. All the 10 students were part of this event. The second event was ‘The analyst’ which was a case study-based event. The winners of the ‘The analyst’ were Saloni Shirwant and Heizel Fernandes.

Extension Activity: New Year Celebration at Jyot School for Children with Autism

The Department of Computer Science organized New Year’s Celebration at Jyot School for children with Autism, Near Datta Mandir, Davorlim, Margao as a part of their extension activity on 3rd February 2023.

The programme started with an informative session about Autism by Mrs. Varsha Desai, Headmistress of the School. Our students presented two dances for the students of the school. Musical chair and passing the parcel games were conducted and the prizes were given. Gifts and snacks were distributed to the children by our students dressed as ‘Chota Bheem’. The children danced with Chota Bheem character, played with balloons and enjoyed the entire programme. The headmistress Mrs. Varsha Desai appreciated our students for their efforts.

A total of 11 students from SYBCA (A& B) were involved in this activity. The teachers incharge were Ms. Rama Borkar and Ms. Nishigandha Naik Gaonkar.  Mr Sumit Kumar, Head of the Department also attended the activity.

Live Screening of Union Budget 2023-2024

The Department of Economics and Banking organized live screening of the Union Budget on 1st February 2023 in the smart classroom from 11:00 am to 12:30 p.m. The Union Budget was screened live so as to provide an opportunity to students and faculty members to understand details about the projected receivables and payables of the government for 2023-2024.

28 students and staff members across the B.Com and BCA programmes attended the live screening of the budget. The budget was presented in the Lok Sabha by the Finance Minister Ms. Nirmala Sitharaman in two parts; Part A consisted of an introduction, PM GatiShakti, inclusive development, productivity enhancement and investment, sunrise opportunities, energy transition and climate action, financing of investments and fiscal management. While part B broadly highlighted upon direct tax proposals and indirect taxes.  At the outset, the finance minister expressed empathy for those who bore adverse health and economic effects of the pandemic.  The total expenditure in budget 2023-24 is estimated at Rs. 45,03,097 crores of which total capital expenditure is Rs. 10,00,961 crores. The budget of 2023-24 reflected continued strong commitment of the Union Government to boost economic growth by investing in infrastructure development leading to an increase in capital expenditure by 37.4 per cent over revised estimate of 2022-23. It presented a vision for Amrit Kaal- a blue print for an empowered and inclusive economy. Further, railways have been accorded its highest-ever capital outlay of Rs 2.40 lakh crore. The budget expanded capital expenditure spending and tied in various priorities including green growth, youth power and inclusive development.

The Finance Minister concluded the budget speech with the announcement of changes in direct and indirect taxes. Ms. Sitharaman announced major changes in tax slabs under the new tax regime. Ms. Lizette D’Costa and Ms. Stesa Pereira were the faculty in charge of the session.

‘Union Budget 2023 – Live Screening’

The PG Department of Commerce organized Live Screening of the Union Budget 2023 on 1st February 2023. The main objective of the session was to provide insights and understanding about Government Spendings and Income for the Financial year 2023-24. Ms. Edrea Picardo, Teacher Incharge in Commerce welcomed the students and gave a brief overview of the importance of the session.

The live screening was projected in the classroom and commenced at 11a.m. The Finance Minister of India, Nirmala Sitharaman presented the budget for the Financial year 2023-24. The main vision of the budget was focused on creating opportunities for citizens with focus on the youth, growth and employment and a strong and stable economic environment which was proposed under seven main priorities which were: inclusive development, reaching the last mile, youth power, financial sector, green growth, unleashing the potential, infrastructure and investment under the goals of Amrit Kaal.

She proposed various schemes and incentives for agriculture, healthcare, research and education, National Digital Library for adolescents, highest ever outlay of capital for Indian Railways, better transport infrastructure, AI in India, E-Courts, R&D grants for Lab grown Diamonds, Focus on Green Growth, boosting tourism, 50 year interest free loans to states. Under Taxation, customs duty was changed for various goods, faster return processing and increase in Exemption limit to Rs. 3 lakhs and rebate limit to 7 lakhs was declared. The budget was presented to the Lok Sabha and the presentation concluded at 12.30pm.

The session was very informative and helped the students in understanding the various aspects and goals of the Indian Government for the Financial year 2023-24. To conclude the budget presentation, the students were asked to share their views on the Union Budget. Students from M.Com Part-I and Part-II, namely, Ms. Neebha Ghodge, Mr. Frazer Menezes, Mr. Harshad Naik, Ms. Resha Hodavadekar, Mr. Prabhu Raghunath and Ms. Shruti Pai Khot participated actively. A total of 52 M.Com students attended the session.

‘GU-ART Preparatory Sessions (Commerce)’

The Post-Graduate Department in association with the Placement Cell and Career Cell organized ‘GU-ART Preparatory Sessions (Commerce)’ for the Third Year B.Com students from 30th January to 10th February 2023 from 5.30 pm to 6.30 pm via Google Meet platform. The objective of the preparatory session was to train the TY B.Com students to prepare for the upcoming GU-ART exam in Commerce which is conducted by Goa University as well as to help them secure a good rank in order to obtain admissions to M.Com Programme or any other Post graduate Programme in Commerce in Colleges of their choice.

Eight students of M.Com Part II, along with two faculty members of the Department delivered sessions on various topics as per the GU-ART Syllabus. A special session on Guidelines while answering GU-ART and Assistance in solving MCQs was conducted on the last day of the Preparatory Programme.

The students were Ms. Meena Choudhary, Ms. Jyoti Koli, Ms. Kanak Indoria, Ms. Vanessa Carrasco, Mr. Anand Kumar, Ms. Leandra Antao, Ms. Amily Gomes and Ms. Joshila Goes. The faculty members were Ms. Valencia Baptista and Ms. Edrea Picardo.

Throughout the training sessions, the participants showed a keen interest in learning. They also answered various questions posed by the trainers to test their knowledge after every session. The participants were interactive and cleared their doubts about various aspects of the GU-ART Exam. 63 students attended the sessions.

Session on ‘The Positive Universe’

The FY Certificate Course Committee had organized a session on “The Positive Universe” as a part of Certificate Course in 21st century Life Skills for the students of FY B.Com and FY BBA(FS) on 31st Jan 2023 from 12:15 to 1:15 pm. The Resource Persons for the session were Dr. Prashant Kakode and Mr. Boby John. The objective of the session was to help the students explore the positive universe and to discuss its impact on mental health and well being.

Ms. Giselle a student from FY B.Com A was the compere for the session. The welcome address was given by Dr. Lina Sadekar, IQAC Coordinator, followed by Introduction of the Guest speakers by Mr. Ajnan Rizvi, student of FY B.Com A.

Dr. Prashant Kakode began his session by narrating a story highlighting the importance of gratitude. He also stressed upon the impact of positive thinking on mental health, physical health, and overall performance. Dr. Prashant concluded his speech with a quote “The purpose of life is to have a life of purpose”. Mr. Boby John took over the session in the second half and explained about the four quadrants of life; things that are urgent and important fall in the first quadrant, second quadrant was about things which are not important and not urgent, third quadrant had important things but not urgent and last quadrant was about things not important but urgent. He explained the students about each quadrant with examples and also recommended to students about which quadrant they should spend time on.

The session ended with a Vote of Thanks proposed by Mr. Damodar Patnekar a student of FY B.Com A. A total of 40 students attended the session.

The Department of Physical Education and Sports had conducted a Kho-Kho Coaching Camp for Men from 05th to 16th January 2023 at Multipurpose High School Ground, Borda -Margao, Goa from 7:30 am to 9:00 am. The Department of Physical Education and Sports had conducted a Handball Coaching Camp for Men & Women from 05th to 30th January 2023 at Manohar Parrikar Indoor Stadium, Navelim- Goa & RMS Ground from 7:30 am to 9:30 am.

The main purpose of conducting this camp is to teach them correct techniques and improve their skills and fitness to participate in upcoming Inter-collegiate Handball Championship. A total of 15 male students & 13 female students attended the training camp.

30 Hours Certificate Course in Tally with GST

The Department of Commerce & Management and the Skill Development Centre of the College organised a 30 hours short term Certificate Course in Tally with GST for the TY B.Com students. The classes were held twice a week in a computer lab from 9th to 28th January 2023 between 1 pm and 4 pm. The Resource Person was Mr. William Vaz, Proprietor, Comtech Academy.

The introductory sessions were about Tally and its advantages such as user-friendly interface, customization and comprehensive reporting and how it offers a wide range of features to manage financial transactions and reporting, which can be useful to small and medium-sized businesses, as well as large organizations, to manage their financial operations.

The students were then taught how to create a company on Tally, creating groups and ledgers, Inventory grouping, Vouchers, Passing GST entries, Batch Reporting, backing up data, passing entries, calculating interest, budgeting, reorder levels and calculating the tax deducted from source and so on and also addressed their doubts.

At the end of the course, the students had to answer an assessment; all 35 students cleared the assessment. The students were awarded certificates for successfully completing the course. The teacher in charge of the course was Ms. Sheryl Sanches.

Consumer Cell – Street play

The Consumer Cell of the Department of Commerce and Management organized a street play on the topic ‘Jago Grahak Jago’ on 28th January 2023 at 12.15 pm near the Multipurpose Hall. The students of FY B.Com performed a street play to create awareness and educate the audience about the rights of the consumers.

The street play was performed in 3 scenes. The first scene was regarding purchasing gold jewellery, where the conclusion was one should always take a bill for the jewellery purchased and the gold should bear the logo of BIS hallmark which certifies the purity of the gold purchased. The second scene emphasized on the consumers’ right to choose. The third scene depicted a scenario of a customer being overcharged and the meaning of MRP i.e. Maximum Retail Price.

The event was coordinated by the Consumer Cell in charge Asst Prof. Sheryl Sanches. The street play was appreciated by all.

Investor Hub Activity 6- Management Games

The Department of Management and students of FY BBA(FS) organized ‘Management Games’ as a part of the Investor Hub activity for the students of BBA(FS) on 28th January 2023. The activity was intended to evaluate the use of management abilities and to provide gamification of in-class concepts.

A total of 38 participants were divided into 8 teams with 4-5 members each. The activities included Treasure Hunt, Decode with Morse Code, and Leadership and Memorization Challenge. The first activity was Leadership and Memorization Challenge where the team leaders were tested based on memory and leadership skills. Out of the 8 teams only 6 qualified for the next round. In the next round of Decode with Morse Code the teams were asked to decode the code and solve the questions asked. 4 teams qualified for the Treasure Hunt round which was the final round. In the final round all teams were asked to identify the seven clues allotted to them within 20 minutes.

The winners of this investors hub activity were Group 2 members – Prajvalit Bhiva Gaonkar, Simran Sharma, Shruti Sunil Kavlekar, Uddhav Talkatkar and Sai Vishal Malvankar students of FY BBA(FS) Division A. In total 53 students attended the investor hub activity. The students had a great time while simultaneously learning about management and finance.
