Inaugural of The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Chair And Session on “India In A Contemporary World”

Manohar Parrikar School of Law & Public Policy in collaboration with 1 Goa Naval Unit NCC, 1 Goa Girls BN NCC UNIT and 1 GOA Boys BN NCC UNIT organized a Formal inaugural of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Chair and session on India in a Contemporary world on 15th February 2023. The Resource Person for the event was Prof. Shrikant Paranjpe, Defense and Strategic Studies, University of Pune. 20 NCC Navy cadets and 1 Army Cadet from the College attended the event at Raj Bhavan.

The Chief Guest for the function was the Governor of Goa Shri P.S. Sreedharan Pillai. The function started with the National Anthem followed by the welcome address by the Vice-Chancellor Prof. Harilal B. Menon.  The Dean of Manohar Parrikar School of Law & Public Policy, Prof. Shaila D’Souza gave the overview of the two-day programme.

The Governor in his speech urged the cadets to be responsible citizens and follow the ideology given by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Prof. Shrikant Paranjpe in his session highlighted the importance of defense education in education system. He also focused on the need to strengthen the defense system in our country.

After the session, awards were given to ANOs, CTOs and meritorious cadets from all over Goa. From Shree Damodar College, Ms. Pretty Pereira, CTO of 1 Goa Naval Unit and Cadet Sumayya Ramdurg received awards.

The inaugural function was attended by the Governor of Goa,  Vice-Chancellor of Goa University Prof. Harilal B. Menon,  Registrar of Goa University V.S Nadkarni, Deans of various Schools of Goa University, Principals of affiliated colleges, COs of 1 Goa Naval Unit NCC, 1 Goa Girls  BN NCC UNIT and 1 GOA Boys BN NCC Unit, ANOs and 450 cadets .

Investor Hub – Movie Screening

The Department of Management of the College organized Investor Hub Activity-7 for the students of FY BBA and FY BBA(FS) students. A finance movie namely ‘Too Big to Fail’ was screened by the Department for the students.

Asst. Prof. Mr. Anirudha Munj gave a brief overview of the movie to the students to provide them the idea behind screening the movie. The story outlined by the movie – ‘Too big to fail’ describes a business sector deemed to be so deeply ingrained in a financial system or economy that its failure would be disastrous to the economy. Therefore, the government will consider bailing out the business or even an entire sector to prevent economic disaster. It highlights the impact of the unethical strategies used by Lehman Brothers and the actions taken by the U.S. Treasury Secretary to prevent the crash of the stock market.

Towards the end of the movie screening, students were asked to give their views on the reasons behind the stock market crash and ways in which it could have been prevented. A total of 21 students attended the movie screening.

Career Opportunities in Commerce

The Department of Commerce & Management in association with Career Cell of the College organised a Career Counselling Session for the students of FY B.Com on Friday, 11th February 2023 at 11.15 a.m. Ms. Sushrusha Naik Khandekar, Convenor of Career Cell introduced the Resource Person for the session. Mr. Gajanan Haldankar, Asst. Prof. in Commerce was the Resource Person for the session.

Mr. Haldankar, in his presentation advised the students regarding various career options in the stream of Commerce. He discussed the career options like Chartered Accountancy, Company Secretary, Cost and Management Accountancy, Civil Services, IBPS Clerical and PO, etc. He also discussed the procedure to achieve these qualifications. Mr. Haldankar showed the students the website of GPSC and demonstrated the various advertisements for the vacancies and procedure to apply for various posts.

The session concluded with discussions. Mr. Haldankar addressed to the queries raised by the students. The students shared positive feedback for the session. Altogether, 57 students attended this session. Ms. Sushrusha Naik Khandekar, Asst. Professor in Commerce, proposed the Vote of Thanks for the session. Dr. Shami Pai, Head of Dept. of Commerce & Management was the Coordinator for the session.

MoU with Pune District Education Association’s Anna SahebMagar Mahavidyalaya

Pune District Education Association’s, Anna Saheb Magar Mahavidyalaya organized Two-day National Workshop on “Implementation of National Education Policy 2020 Industry Institute Linkage” on 10th& 11th February 2023. Principal Dr Nitin Ghorpade welcomed the gathering & briefed the audience about the workshop. The workshop was inaugurated by Dr. R.S Mali. In his opening remarks he highlighted NEP and its aspects related to development of education. Dr Anjali Sajilal was invited as Resource Person for the session on “Impact of Industry Institute Linkage on Skills Set of Students” The other Resource Persons were Dr Apoorwa Palkar, Dr Puranik, Dr Devidas Golhar, Dr Gaur Gopal Banik, Dr Ashok Giri, Dr Yogesh Bhole and Dr Patil who covered various topics under Institute Industry Linkage.

Annasaheb Magar Mahavidyalaya has signed MoU with Damodar College for student exchange programs and other related activities. The workshop ended with certificate distribution and Vote of Thanks.

IBM Skills Build Programme

The Career and Placement Cell and the Internship Cell of the College organized a session on IBM Skills Build Programme in association with Research and Extension Association for Conservation (REACHA) New Delhi and the Directorate of Technical Education, Govt of Goa on 10th Feb 2023. The session was organized for the students of FY B.Com students. The Resource Person for the session was Ms. Amla.

The IBM Skills Build Programme aims to foster the skill development of learners, especially village level entrepreneurs and other government stakeholders. The Resource Person shared the link for registering the students for the Programme and provided hands on guidance for completing certification courses through IBM.

The session was attended by 90 students.

Guest Lecture organized by Centre of Excellence in Sales

The Centre of Excellence in Sales organized a session on the topic ‘Busting the Myth -Salespeople are born, not made’ for interested students of the institution across all programmes.  The Resource Person for the session was Mr. Pavan Agni – Proprietor, Buy Spex Home Appliances and Gifts. Dr. Shami Pai, Coordinator of Centre of Excellence in Sales, welcomed the Resource Person and addressed the gathering. Ms. Disha Morvekar, student of FY B.Com introduced the Resource Person to the audience.

Mr. Pavan started the session by explaining the significance of sales job in the economy. He discussed various concepts in sales and marketing and also explained how sales is different from marketing. He clarified basic concepts in marketing and further introduced some new concepts such as FAB strategy, Pareto’s Principle, Latent demand etc. to the audience. The speaker stressed on the need for style and content while making a sales presentation and further discussed some of the pre-requisites for successful selling.

Mr. Agni listed out the important skills a salesperson should possess in order to make a successful sales pitch. He supported his explanation with many real-life examples. The Resource Person shared his personal experience with the students and motivated them to take up career paths in the sales sector.

Mr. Agni stressed on the importance of consumer behavior in marketing. He informed the students that presently companies are focusing on customer relationship management and technology plays a very important role in maintaining customer relationship.  The speaker at the end of the session addressed the queries raised by the students with regards to sales job. The participants found the session very informative and beneficial. A total of 35 students attended the session. The session ended at 11.15 am.  The entire event was coordinated by Dr. Maithili Naik, Ms. Pooja Shanbhag and Ms. Marjina Shaikh, Assistant Professors in Commerce & Management and members of the Centre of Excellence in Sales.

Access to Digital Library for Faculty Members & Students

The NDLI Club in collaboration with Department of Library & Information Science and Department of Management conducted a Live Session on ‘Access to Digital Library’ for Faculty Members & Students. The Resource Person for the session was Mrs. Manasi Rege, Librarian and President of NDLI Club.

The session was on usage of Digital Library for Database, N-LIST Consortium, NDLI e-resources and Pearson e-Library. Faculty members and students were given an in-depth overview of login and usage of these platforms.

National Digital Library of India is a website where users can read books digitally through any device over the internet. Pearson e-Library was the second digital Library platform introduced to the users which enabled users to download and refer to 150 books in various courses. It also had features that allowed users to make notes on the platform itself. The platform also allows users to access books in offline mode once it has been downloaded.

Another Digital platform is ‘Indiastat’. This resource provides actual facts and figures on various sectors in India. It is useful for comparative analysis of data or to establish trends based on previous years data. The next resource accessible to users was N-LIST. It is a platform that allows users to search data on any area or field or genres of their interest in the form of ebooks, ejournals, e-magazines, etc.

The students found the session to be insightful. Asst. Prof Cinola Vaz delivered the Vote of Thanks for the session. A total of 76 students and all faculty members from the Department of Management attended the session.

Field Trip to Lokutsav

The students of FY & SY B.Com were taken on a field trip to Lokutsav, Kala Academy, Campal, Panjim- Goa on 8th February 2023. The field trip was a part of the curriculum in the subject of Rural Marketing and Introduction to Marketing.

The objectives of this fieldtrip were to familiarize students with the importance of planning and execution, significance of event marketing, to interview and interact with rural producers (Self-Help Groups, Mahila Mandals, rural artisans) and understand their challenges in marketing rural products in urban markets and to blend classroom learning with field experience. This field trip provided students with an opportunity to interact with a few small-scale entrepreneurs and understand the challenges faced by producers in terms of distribution, pricing, marketing and selling. There were many stalls and students were impressed by the scale and size of this well-organised event.

The students departed from the College premises at 10:00 am and returned by 2.30 pm. 49 students were part of this fieldtrip and were accompanied by Dr. Lina Sadekar, Dr. Shami Pai, Ms. Swati Bhat and Ms. Pooja Shanbhag.

Juo Aditya Joshi Receives the Prestigious DDG NCC Award

JUO Aditya Joshi, from the NCC Army wing of the College received the prestigious DDG NCC Award from Air Commodore B.S Kanwar, DDG NCC Directorate of Karnataka & Goa at Bangalore on 7th Feb, 2023. DDG NCC Commendation Card is awarded to JUO Aditya Joshi for his outstanding deeds in the field of training and contribution in cultural activities conducted by DDG NCC Directorate of Karnataka & Goa.

JUO Aditya Joshi represented Goa in the Republic Day Parade on 26th January 2023 at Red Fort, New Delhi.During his time in RDC, he was fortunate enough to answer Youth Exchange Programme exams. JUO Aditya Joshi mentioned that he was happy to interact with cadets from all over India. He witnessed the true diversity of our country. He got an opportunity to meet and interact with all the three Chiefs of the Armed Forces, CDS, Defense Minister and most importantly the Prime minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi. He also had the opportunity to interact with the Chief Minister of Karnataka over dinner. JUO Aditya Joshi’s journey from the College campus to the RDC parade was highly enriching with the support and guidance of the Principal Prof. Prita Mallya, Vice Principal, Dr. Edwin Barreto and NCC Officer Lt. Sandesh Gaonkar.

Excellence in Handball

The College excelled in Handball (Men’s) at Inter Collegiate Handball Championship organized by Goa University from 6th February to 10th February 2023. The SDCCE team qualified in the finals after defeating Dhempe College, Miramar in semi-finals with the score 17 – 14 and won overall Runners-up Position in Inter Collegiate Handball Championship after getting defeated by St. Xavier’s, Mapusa

The College participated in Inter Collegiate Handball Championship (Women’s) organized by Goa University from 6th February to 10th February 2023. The SDCCE team qualified for the semi finals after defeating V.M. Salgaoncar College of Law, Miramar with the score 10 – 06. Overall we were the semi-finalist after getting defeated by St. Xavier’s, Mapusa.
