Campus to Corporate Training

The Placement Cell organized its pre-placement Campus to Corporate Training for the registered participants in five sessions on 15th, 16th, 17th, 20th and 25th March 2023. The Resource Person was Trainer Lorraine Correa Fernandes- Soft Skill Coach for 91HR and an IELTS/ English Trainer for EduAdvise International.

The objectives of the program were to prepare the students for Campus to Corporate Jobs transition; to give inputs into writing their resumes, facing interviews, learning corporate etiquette and resolving personal development issues through detailed interaction and Q&A sessions.

During her five sessions, Ms. Lorraine Correa Fernandes conscientiously covered a range of topics including the art and elements of first impression, how to write a good CV, types of CV(brief and detailed), skills necessary to stand out during an interview, high performance communication, power of body language, types of body postures while sitting and standing, types of handshakes, importance of elevator pitch, types of clothes, shoes, perfume to be perfect on the day of the interview and also what questions we can ask the interviewers, art of departing and most importantly how to confidently answer an interview. She meticulously conducted several exercises throughout the training session which kept the participants attentive and involved. She focused on situations in which candidates may find themselves during an interview and stressed the importance of the approach that a candidate takes to tackle the situation. She concluded her sessions with an array of important and bonus tips which will undoubtedly be beneficial to the students once they enter the job market.

Social Etiquettes and Manners

The FY Certificate Course Committee had organized a session on “Social Etiquettes and Manners” as a part of Certificate Course in 21st century Life Skills for the students of FY BBA(FS), FY B.Com and FY BBA on 15th March 2023. The Resource Person was Mr. Sameer Kapadi, Certified Life Coach, Entrepreneur- BizzNBuzz Event & Media LLP, Ex-Cluster Manager-Induslnd Bank Ltd and Professional Musician. The objective of having a session on social etiquette and manners for students was to teach them the appropriate social behaviors and customs that are expected in different social settings. 39 students attended the session.

Mr. Chris Cardozo a student from FY BBA(FS) welcomed and introduced the Resource Person to the audience. The speaker began by explaining why social etiquette and manners are essential for building strong relationships and maintaining good communication with others. When students learn about proper social etiquette and manners, they can develop a better understanding of how to behave in different social situations, whether it’s at school, in the workplace, or in social gatherings. The speaker conducted few activities to help students develop important social skills, improve their communication abilities, and prepare them for success in their personal and professional lives. At the end the Resource Person played a short video about bad and good habits.

At the end of the session, the speaker addressed the queries raised by the students. The students found the session very informative and enlightening. The session ended with a Vote of Thanks proposed by Ms. Nitya Bhat, a student of FY BBA(FS)-A. Asst. Prof. Vinaya Kirloskar was the teacher in charge for the session.

Consumer Awareness Drive

On the occasion of World Consumer Rights Day on 15th March, the Consumer Cell of the College took up a Consumer Awareness Drive to create awareness among the people about the rights and duties of the consumers. The Consumer Cell Convenor, Asst. Prof. Sheryl Sanches and 14 B.Com students participated in the drive.

The student volunteers prepared several charts artistically portraying the rights and duties of the customers and enthusiastically visited more than 40 households in Comba, Margao. The students and faculty explained the various consumer rights such as the right to choose, right to safety, right to be informed, right to consumer education, right to be heard, right to seek redressal and the Consumer Protection Act. Students used relevant examples to explain these rights.

The Consumer duties and responsibilities i.e., be honest with the information you provide, know how to make a complaint, use the product or service in keeping with the terms and conditions, avoiding risk etc. were also explained by the students.

The activity was appreciated by the households and they took keen interest in understanding the various rights and duties. The community encouraged the students to take up initiatives to solve the issues of the society such as garbage disposal and traffic management.

Study Tour to Bangalore

The Department of Management organized a study tour to Bangalore, Karnataka, from 10th-15th March 2023. 62 FY and SY students of the BBA(FS) programme accompanied by faculty members, Ms. CinolaVaz, Ms. Snehal Jadhav and Ms. Delisha Rebello went on the tour.

The group reached Bangalore on 11th March 2023 and students were taken to Lulu Mall, in the evening. The mall has the largest indoor entertainment zone.

On day 2, the group visited the Iskcon Sri Radha Krishna Temple, followed by a visit to Lalbagh Botanical Garden, which is one of the oldest botanical gardens in India.

Post lunch the students were taken to see the Adiyogi statue. At 7:30 pm there was a 3D laser show, a quick glance into how Adiyogi imparted the science of yoga to Saptrishi and Devi Parvati in the most beautiful and grand way using a projector mapping technique on 112 feet tall Adiyogi statue.

On day 3, the group visited the Kristu Jayanti College at 10 am. They had a talk on tips to crack an interview along with case studies and inspiring examples. The group was taken on a campus tour, followed by lunch at the College canteen. The group was then taken to the Commercial Street of Bangalore where they were given time to shop and have their dinner.

On the last day, the group checked out of the hotel at 9.30 am and visited Orion Mall at Brigade Gateway Enclave to shop and have lunch. They arrived at the Madgaon station at 5.30 am on 15th March 2023.

Participation for ECOFEST 2023

The Department of Economics of M.E.S College, Zuarinagar, organized ECOFEST 2023, an inter-collegiate competition on 10th March 2023. 10 B.Com students participated in the competition, which comprised six events, including Budding Economist, Elocution, Tile Painting, Reel-Making, Fashion Show, and Street Play.

The students displayed a lot of creative and intellectual skills while participating in the above competitions and bagged two places, first place in the Reel-Making competition, and third place in the Street Play competition. For the reel-making competition, the participant had to cover a glimpse of all the events held at ECOFEST 2023,while the theme for the street play was Gender Equality. The students were guided by Assistant Professor Ms. Lizette D’Costa of the Department of Economics & Banking.

Creative Thinking Workshop

The Department of Computer Science in association with Institution’s Innovation Council organized a 40-hour workshop on “Creative Thinking” from 06th to 10th March and from 20th to 25th March. The objectives of this workshop were:

To impart learning of the Creative Thinking course to SY BVoc(ST) students in an interactive, activity-based manner
To provide advanced-learners of other programmes an opportunity to learn and explore a range of creative thinking methods, tools and techniques to generate ideas and solve problems.

The Resource Person for the workshop was Ms. Caroline Stewart Silva, Corporate & Life Skills Trainer and proprietor of Impact Training Solutions. 18 SY B.Voc.(ST) students and 07 advanced learners of other programmes participated in the workshop.

The Workshop began at 8.30 am with the welcome address by IQAC Coordinator Dr. Lina Sadekar and IIC Convenor Dr. Rodney D’Silva. HoD of Computer Science Mr. Sumit Kumar briefed students about the workshop and its objectives, after which SY B.Voc(ST) student Mr. Malik Rehan introduced the Resource Person.

On day 1, Ms. Caroline Silva commenced the workshop with the introduction of the participants followed by introduction of creative thinking persona and attitudes. She introduced the process of creative and lateral thinking along with problem solving, perceptual choice, sharp divisions and polarizations.

Day 2 started with lateral thinking techniques along with activities. She introduced the QUOTA technique and the generation of alternatives to the participants. Activities were conducted using problems and examples based on geometrical, non-geometrical, pictorial and written materials/ stories.

Day 3 focused upon the concept and activities based on Challenging Assumptions. Participants enthusiastically participated in all the group and individual activities.

On Day 4, participants learnt about Innovation, Suspended Judgement and Design with the help of examples and activities. Days 5 & 6 focused upon the Design Thinking Process and the activities were conducted using the SCAMPER concept. The concepts and techniques relating to empathy, user centricity, observation, dominant ideas and crucial factors were also discussed.

Participants learnt and performed activities on fractionation, reversal method and brainstorming on Day 7 of the workshop. On the concluding day of the workshop, the concepts of six thinking hats, mind mapping and analogies were introduced through activities. Participants also learnt about random stimulation and the difference between “NO” and “PO”. The learning of the workshop was assessed by the trainer through a group presentation. All the participants were asked to present the solution to the selected problem in group.

During the Valedictory session, Principal Prof. Prita D. Mallya thanked the Resource Person and asked the participants to identify atleast one problem on the College Campus and come up with some creative solution by 20th of April 2023.

The overall feedback for the session was positive and encouraging. Participants have suggested organizing similar workshops in the areas of Personality Development, Research Methodology, how to Multitask, Machine Learning, Innovation, etc. In their feedback, approximately, 64% students mentioned that this workshop has met their expectation level and all participants agreed that their thinking ability has improved significantly. This workshop was well received by the students and e-certificates were issued to them post-completion.

SkillStir 2.0

The Department of Economics & Banking, in collaboration with the Fine Arts Club of the College organized ‘Skill Stir 2.0’ from 8th to 13th March 2023. The activity was conducted with the objective to build and stir up the creative and entrepreneurial skills within the students. The skills taught comprised the basics of stitching, the art of decoupage, crochet for soft toys, and the art of baking.

Day 1: Basics of Stitching: The first skill imparted to the students on Day 1 was the Basics of Stitching. The Resource Persons for the day were Mrs. Jayamala Shetty and Mrs. Prema Naik. The students were taught the fundamentals of stitching a kurta, i.e., how to take the required measurements of the person, the technique of drawing the pattern on a newspaper with the measurements taken, which then is to be drawn on the cloth that has to be stitched. The students were captivated by this skill and got to learn a lot from the experienced resource persons. A total of 37 students attended this session.

Day 2: Art of Decoupage: The second skill imparted to the students on Day 2 was the Art of Decoupage. The Resource Person for the day was Mrs. Jemina Vaz. Mrs. Vaz taught the students how to paint the bottles with specific decoupage chalk paints, and how to use special decoupage tissue papers for the artwork. The students were fascinated by this art. She also shared her experience on the level of profits she earns through this skill, and how one could turn into a great entrepreneur with this skill. 15 students attended this session.

Day 3: Crochet for Soft Toys: The third skill imparted to the students on Day 3 was Crochet-Making with a focus on making soft toys. The Resource Person for the day was Ms. Linette Gomes. Ms. Gomes taught the students basic stitches in crochet-making. She enlightened them on the diverse needles and yarns available and how each of them is different. She demonstrated a few steps in crochet-making and assembled a few soft toys in the presence of the students. She also shared how she markets her product on social media, especially through Instagram with her account ‘Crochet to Cuddle.’ It was a unique learning experience for the attendees. 18 students were present for this session.

Day 4: Art of Baking: The fourth skill imparted to the students on Day 4 was the Art of Baking. The Resource Person for the day was Mrs. Maria Lourdes Barreto. Mrs. Barreto taught the students the basics of baking. She started with the techniques of how to make a short-crust biscuits, revealing the ingredients and method of the same. She next went on to baking of a marble cake, wherein she skilfully displayed the method of adding the ingredients, sifting the flour, folding in of certain ingredients and spoke on the importance of all these steps which goes on to making a soft and moist cake. 24 students attended this session.

The activity SkillStir 2.0 successfully imbibed in the students creative and entrepreneurial skills meeting the objective of the activity. The faculty in charge for the activity was Ms. Lizette D’Costa, Assistant Professor, Department of Economics & Banking and Convenor, Fine Arts Club, Cultural Council.

Rally on International Women’s Day and National No Smoking Day

To commemorate International Women’s Day and National No Smoking Day, the NSS Unit of the College organized a rally on 8th March 2023. 43 NSS Volunteers participated in the rally, which started at 12:30 pm from the main entrance of the College to Comba, Margao and ended at around 1:15 pm. The activity was coordinated by NSS PO In charge Gajanan B. Haldankar, and NSS POs Sanjay Velip and Namrata Ugvekar.

Money Matters 5.0

The Department of Management organized an Inter-Collegiate event “Money Matters 5.0” for Undergraduate students across Goa on 6th March 2023 and the theme for the event was “Time is Money”. The aim of the event was to create a ‘Real-Life’ situation to educate students in facing and handling the challenges that they may come across in the increasingly complex and dynamic markets of the modern world. “Money Matters 5.0” provided a great platform for the students to showcase their skills and talents.

5 Colleges namely Dempo College, Don Bosco College, Rosary College, Carmel College and M.E.S College participated in the event, whichcomprised7 sub-events named Jagruti, Stock Wars, Hammer the Box, Corporate Roadies, Econowhiz, Battle it Out and Chanakyaniti.

The inaugural function began with the welcome address by Dr. Shami Pai, Head of Department of Commerce. The keynote speaker for the event was Mr. Abhijit Sawant, CEO of ABHI Ganesh Investment Service Pvt. Ltd. and an alumnus of the College, who gave an introduction about finance and its relevance in our lives. He shared his journey working as a Financial Advisor and the challenges he encountered. The speaker appreciated the department for hosting such event which gives students a platform to exhibit their talents and to gain knowledge in a creative and enjoyable manner. The inaugural function ended at 9:30 am.

The event ended with a Vote of Thanks proposed by Mr. Myron Soares, Student Coordinator from SYBBA(FS). The faculty in charge for Money Matters 5.0 were Mr. Omkar Pawaskar, Assistant Professor in Management and Ms. Vinaya Kirloskar, Assistant Professor in Commerce.

‘Bone Density Detection Camp’

The IQAC & Women’s Cell of the College organized a Bone Density Detection Camp on 6th March 2023. Although the camp was organized as an International Women’s Day activity, it was open for all members of Vidya Vikas Mandal teaching & non-teaching staff above the age of 30 years. The objective of the camp was to make the employees aware about the significance of bone density. The College had arranged for Technician Chetan Rotti from Isha Health Care to conduct the camp.

119 employees – 78 female and 41 – attended the camp and got their bone density checked. The 119 employees comprised 62 employees of Shree Damodar College of Commerce & Economics, 33 of VVM’s RMS Higher Secondary School and 26 of VVM’s G.R. Kare College of Law.

Participants expressed their gratitude to Shree Damodar College for taking this initiative.
