Guest Lecture on Software testing

The Department of Computer Science organized a  guest lecture on 18th April 2023to provide additional support for the software testing component of the Web Developer skill course for FY B.Voc(ST) students.

Mrs. Gina Parab, Director of QA and Support Services, Mrs. Durga Khedekar, Senior QA, and Mrs. Diliya Borker, Senior QA, from Creative Capsule – an IT company – were the Resource Persons for the session. This lecture was open to all students in the Department, and 30 students registered for the session. The session began with Mr. Andre Pacheco, the faculty member, providing a brief introduction to the Resource Persons and the session.

During the lecture, Ms. Parab explained the outline of the session and discussed the different job roles to expect as a Software tester/QA. She then proceeded to explain the various concepts of testing, followed by Ms. Khedekar who went into details of System and Integration testing, giving various examples used in industry. Finally, Ms. Borker took up the concepts of black-box and white-box testing and gave a live example of an e-commerce platform and the different testing cycles that needed to be conducted.

At the end, FY B.Voc student, Ms. Bhakti Mirashi expressed gratitude by thanking the Resource Persons. They were then presented with a memento by the Principal, Prof. Prita D. Mallya, and HoD, Mr. Sumit Kumar during the Valedictory ceremony.

Participants were satisfied with the session, and some FY & SY students expressed interest in learning more about software testing. The Resource Persons were delighted to share their contact details and provide assistance to the students in pursuing a career in QA/Software testing.

Felicitation of Budding Entrepreneurs

The IQAC with E-Cell & Incubation Centre organized a function to felicitate the Budding Entrepreneurs among the students of the College on 17th April 2023 at 12 noon. The aim of the event was to motivate our young entrepreneurs and promote the entrepreneurial spirit among students. The function began with a welcome speech by the Principal, Prof. Prita D Mallya, who congratulated all the successful young entrepreneurs on their achievements. The Chief Guest for the event was Mr. Abhijit Sawant, an alumnus of the College and CEO of ABHIGanesh Investment Services Pvt. Ltd.

Ms. Abha Naik provided an overview of IQAC, E-Cell, and the incubation center and their roles in motivating students toward entrepreneurship. She explained the various activities and initiatives carried out by the committees. Ms. Twinkle Fernandes, an Assistant Professor in Commerce at the PG Department, introduced the Chief guest, Mr. Abhijit Sawant, who then addressed the students. Mr. Sawant emphasized the importance of attitude in achieving success and urged students to create value rather than simply invest money. He shared his personal story and motivated the students to change their mindsets in order to become successful entrepreneurs. His speech was well received and appreciated by all in attendance.

50 young entrepreneurs were then felicitated by the Chief guest.

Dr. Edwin Barreto, Vice Principal, in his Vote of Thanks, expressed his gratitude to the members of the Cell for recognizing the hard work and dedication of the young entrepreneurs. Ms. Petalia Coutinho did a commendable job as the compere of the program. The event was coordinated by Dr. Lina Sadekar, IQAC Coordinator, and Dr. Shami Pai, Convenor of the E-Cell & Incubation Centre. The program was a great success and the students left feeling inspired and motivated to pursue their entrepreneurial dreams. A total of 50 students and faculty members attended the function.

Session on Retail Marketing Mix

The Postgraduate Department of Commerce organized a session on “Retail Marketing Mix” for the students of the M.Com Programme on 15th April 2023. The Resource Person for the session was Mr. Shailendra Veluskar, Partner at Kris Manufacturing Company.

Mr. Shailendra began the session by providing a comprehensive overview of the retail marketing mix and its importance in the retail industry. He highlighted the importance of the retail marketing mix in the current business landscape. By discussing each of the 4Ps in detail, he helped students gain a better understanding of how each element contributes to a successful retail marketing strategy.

Mr. Shailendra provided valuable insights into the retail industry’s marketing mix, emphasizing the importance of various factors such as product assortment, pricing strategies, store location, visual merchandising, and promotional activities. He used real-life examples and case studies to illustrate the practical application of these concepts, and the interactive discussions allowed students to ask questions and share their insights. Mr. Shailendra’s gesture of giving pens and t-shirts to students who answered the questions added a fun and rewarding element to the lecture. Overall, the session was highly informative and provided students with a deeper understanding of the retail marketing mix’s complex dynamics.

The session concluded with a Vote of Thanks delivered by Sarthak Faldesai. A total of 40 students attended the session.

Alumni Reconnect Series 7: Session on Practical Aspects of Equity Derivatives

The Postgraduate Department of Commerce in association with the Alumni Engagement Cell organized a session on ‘Practical Aspects of Equity Derivatives’ on 11th April 2023. The Resource Person for the session was Mr. Chirag Majithia, Partner at Shreeji Investments, Margao. Asst. Prof. Ms. Valencia Baptista welcomed the students to the session and Mr. Hassan Raza of M.Com-I introduced the Resource Person.

Mr. Chirag began the session by providing a brief overview of the practical aspects of equity derivatives. He covered various topics related to derivatives markets, such as margin money, equity derivatives, call & put options, futures contracts, open interest, and trade cycles. He explained how buyers and sellers enter into contracts and provided examples of equity derivatives, such as Reliance and Adani Power. He also informed the students about equity options, equity index futures, and the differences between call and put options.

In addition, Mr. Chirag conducted a demonstration on how to enter into a contract in F&O markets and how to buy stocks. He divided the audience into two groups, where one group was allotted an index and the other was allotted a stock, and he showed them how to place buy and sell orders for the future via digital platforms.

The session concluded with the students expressing their opinions and asking questions about derivatives. Mr. Frazer Menezes proposed the Vote of Thanks, and the session ended at 12:30 pm.

Alumni Reconnect Series 6: Insurance Marketing

The Postgraduate Department of Commerce, in association with the Alumni Engagement Cell organized a Session for M.Com Part-I and Part-II students on 10th April 2023. The Resource Person was Ms. Ruhi Lotlikar, Development Officer at Life Insurance Corporation and an alumna of the College. The main objective of the session was to provide students with a platform to understand the practical aspects and career opportunities in Insurance Marketing. Asst. Prof. Edrea Picardo introduced the speaker to the audience.

Ms. Ruhi Lotlikar began the session by providing an overview of the meaning and types of insurance. She emphasized that life insurance provides financial stability to the nominee after the death of the policyholder. She shared that she herself did not initially understand the importance of life insurance when she started her job, but after gaining 10 years of experience, she realized its significance.

Ms. Lotlikar highlighted that marketing is a fundamental aspect of insurance as a service, teaching important communication and time management skills. She explained that marketing involves market surveys and random sampling to identify potential customers. Ms. Ruhi also provided insights on future job opportunities such as content writing and affiliate marketing.

Moving on to life insurance marketing in India, Ms. Ruhi emphasized the importance of communication and following up with potential customers. She also noted that due to the diverse income levels in the country, life insurance is not mandatory in India, unlike some other countries. Ms. Lotlikar further explained the benefits of having life insurance, such as low risk, tax benefits under 80 C, and additional benefits such as health insurance.

Ms. Ruhi then conducted a role play with a student volunteer, Ms. Roshni Khatun, to illustrate different scenarios of customer interactions with an insurance agent. She also cited a recent real-life example, where lack of information led to policyholders wanting to close their accounts due to fear of losses.

Ms. Ruhi highlighted the qualities necessary for getting people to accept life insurance, such as empathy, soft skills, observation skills, and a positive approach. She concluded the session with a quote from Abdul Kalam, “Love your job, not the company,” emphasizing the importance of pursuing a career that one is passionate about. She also addressed questions from the audience.

The session, attended by 43 students, ended with a Vote of Thanks proposed by Mr. Sarthak, a student of M.Com-II.

Excellence in Cricket (Women)

The College participated in Inter Collegiate Cricket Women’s Championship organized by Goa University from 05th to 17th April 2023. The SDCCE team played exceptionally well and qualified for the semi-finals after defeating St. Xavier’s College, Mapusa in the quarters. However, the College was unable to make it to the finals as they lost the match against D.M.C Assagao in the semi-finals. 21 colleges participated in the Championship.

National Level FDP on “Research Methodology &Academic Writing with Hands-On SPSS”

The Research and Development Cell, Faculty Development Cell & Department of Library and Information Science of the College in association with EdMaestro Pvt Ltd organized an Online 7-Day National level FDP on Research Methodology & Academic Writing with hands-on SPSS from 31st March to 8th April 2023. The Resource Person was Dr. Anubhuti Dwivedi, Director, EdMaestro Pvt. Ltd., Training & Consulting Company.

The Objectives of the FDP were to equip the participants with the knowledge and skills to conduct research, including identifying the right research problem, building the research framework, selecting appropriate data analysis techniques, using SPSS for data analysis and interpretation, and writing the thesis and quality research papers that are publishable in indexed journals.

The FDP was comprehensive and covered a range of topics including Problem Identification, Literature Review, Measurement & Scaling, Questionnaire Designing, Introduction to Univariate & Multivariate Techniques of Data Analysis, Data Preparation & Basics of Working with SPSS, Cross Tabs & Chi-Square Test, T-Test, ANOVA, Correlation, Simple & Multiple Regression, Logistic Regression, Discriminant Analysis, Cluster Analysis, Exploratory Factor Analysis in SPSS, Introduction to CFA and Structural Equation Modelling (SEM), Writing Thesis and Good Research Papers for Publication in Scopus/ ABDC/ WoS/ ABS Journals, Selecting Appropriate Journal and Identifying Fake and Predatory Journals

A total of 97 faculty members from all over India attended the FDP, with 27 being from our own institution. The participants provided very positive feedback on the FDP and expressed their interest in attending more research-related FDPs in the future.

The FDP was successfully coordinated by Dr. Maithili Naik, Convenor of the R&D Cell, Ms. Swati Bhat, Convenor of the FDP Cell, and Ms. Manasi Rege, College Librarian. Mr. Shreyas Desai served as the Teacher in charge of the FDP, ensuring its smooth execution.

Two-Day National Conference on Physical Education and Sports Sciences

A Two-Day National Conference on Physical Education and Sports was organized by the Department of Physical Education & Sports in collaboration with the Directorate of Higher Education, Government of Goa on April 5th and 6th, 2023. The theme of the Conference was ‘Enhancing life through Physical Education and Sports.’ The event was graced by the presence of the Honorable Vice Chancellor of Goa University, Prof. Harilal Menon, as the Chief Guest. The Keynote Speaker was Prof. Vivek Pandey, Honorable Vice Chancellor (Officiating) & Head, Dept. of Exercise Physiology, Laximibai National Institute of Physical Education and Sports, Gwalior.

The Inaugural Function of the conference commenced with the lighting of the lamp and an invocation song. Prof. Prita Mallya, the Principal, warmly welcomed the attendees and emphasized the significance of sports in cognitive development. The Chief Guest, Honorable Vice Chancellor of Goa University, Prof. Harilal Menon, delivered a speech where he encouraged researchers to explore various interdisciplinary aspects of sports research. He also highlighted the different types of research that can be conducted in the field of sports, providing valuable insights to the audience.

The keynote address was delivered by Prof. Vivek Pandey, who spoke on the topic of ‘Exercise and Sports Physiology.’ Prof. Pandey’s speech was informative and thought-provoking, leaving the audience with a better understanding of exercise and sports physiology.

The conference had a Plenary session 1, which was conducted by the Resource Person, Dr. Dayanand Sansanwal, Former Head and Dean, Dept. of Education, Devi Ahilya University, Indore. The topic of the session was Variables and Title Writing in Research, where Dr. Sansanwal explained the criteria for selecting a research topic and the different steps involved in research. He also highlighted the errors that are commonly committed in research and explained the various types of hypotheses and variables with illustrations from Shodhganga. Plenary session 2 was conducted by Dr. Sam Braganza, College Director of Physical Education & Sports, SSA Government College of Arts & Commerce- Pernem. Dr. Braganza delivered his address on the topic ‘Values to value: Changing Facets of Sports.’ He expressed his concern over the changing attitudes towards sports and how the true value of sports is getting diluted.

After the Plenary sessions, there were two technical sessions. Technical Session 1(offline) and Technical Session 2 (online). The offline session was chaired by Prof. Vivek Pandey and co-chaired by Dr. Rajan Mathew, College Director of Physical Education & Sports, Government College of Arts, Science & Commerce, Quepem Goa. Eleven papers were presented in diverse fields like law, education, sports, yoga, and more. The online technical session was chaired by Dr. Suman Pandey, Assistant Professor in Physical Education at Savitribai Phule Pune University. Eight papers were presented on various topics related to sports and physical education.

Day Two of the Conference began with Plenary session 3 which was conducted by Dr. Suman Pandey. She gave an inspiring speech on “Exercises for Holistic Wellness.” She discussed the four dimensions of wellness and emphasized the importance of a diverse range of exercises for physical, mental, and social well-being.

In Plenary session 4, Dr. Devashish Bagchi, College Director of Physical Education and Sports, Parvatibai Chowgule College of Arts and Science spoke about the ‘Impact of Physical Education on Academic Achievement & Cognitive Performance – An Overview.’ He discussed the benefits of physical activity and the Gurukul system of education, which is an unstructured but scientifically designed way of learning. Finally, Mr. Balachandra Jadar, University Assistant Director of Physical Education and Sports, Goa University conducted the 5th Plenary session on the topic ‘Physical Education: Need of the hour’ where he spoke about the need for physical education at various stages of an individual’s education. He also expressed hope for better days for sports in the near future.

On Day 2, technical session 1 took place in Hall No. 2 in offline mode. The session was chaired by Dr. Dayanand Sansanwal. Mr. Siddesh Kesarkar, Assistant Director of Academics at DHE, Porvorim, Goa, served as the Co-Chairperson. The session featured 6 presentations covering diverse areas in sports and physical education.

The Valedictory function was held at 4:00 pm, with Prof. F M Nadaf, Deputy Director of Higher Education, Goa as the Chief Guest. Principal Prof. Prita Mallya spoke about the importance of physical activity as an investment for long-term health benefits and expressed her appreciation for the diverse range of topics discussed at the conference. The Conference Coordinator Dr. Ajinkya Kudtarkar presented the Conference report, and the Chief Guest congratulated the College for organizing a conference in Sports Sciences despite being a Commerce College. He also highlighted the negative effects of electronic gadgets on human health and encouraged the audience to engage in physical activity. The event concluded with a Vote of Thanks by Mr. Saurabh Raikar, Instructor in Physical Education.

E-Waste Collection Drive

To commemorate Global Recycling Day, the NSS unit in collaboration with Vasundhara (Green Club) organized an E-waste collection drive from 20th March to 01st April 2023.  The purpose of celebrating this day was to raise awareness about the importance of recycling e-waste and encourage people to adopt sustainable practices in their daily lives.
The students were given instructions to submit any E-waste generated by them to any one of the NSS Programme officers. A total of 09 students submitted the E-waste which included an induction cooker, computer accessories, TV remote, mobile, mobile chargers, etc,
The activity was coordinated by NSS PO- In charge Mr. Gajanan B. Haldankar, NSS PO, Mr. Sanjay Velip, NSS PO, Ms. Namrata Ugvekar, and Convenor of Vasundhara (Green Club) Ms. Stesa Pereira.

NET/ SET Coaching in Paper I and II (Commerce)

The Postgraduate Department of Commerce along with the Career & Placement Cell organized NET/ SET Coaching in Paper I and II (Commerce) for the M.Com-II students, every Saturday from 30th July 2022 to 15th April 2023. The objective of the Coaching was to prepare students to answer the NET/SET Exam, which is the eligibility requirement for entering the teaching profession at the College/University level.

The following faculty members of the PG Department of Commerce covered different subjects in the two papers. In Paper I, Ms. Valencia Baptista covered Teaching Aptitude, Research Aptitude, Comprehension, and People, Development & Environment, while Ms. Edrea Picardo covered Communication, Mathematical Reasoning & Aptitude, and Logical Reasoning. Mr. Myron Fernandes covered Information and Communication Technology and Higher Education System, and Ms. Premlata Prajapat covered Data Interpretation.

In Paper II, Ms. Valencia Baptista covered Business Statistics and Research Methods, Income-tax and Corporate Tax Planning, Accounting and Auditing, Business Economics, Business Finance, Business Management, Human Resource Management, and Marketing Management, while Ms. Edrea Picardo covered Business Environment and International Business. Ms. Premlata Prajapat covered Banking & Financial Institutions and Legal Aspects of Business in Paper II.

28 students benefited from the sessions.
