Career Counselling Programme on Chartered Accountancy Course

The Department of Commerce & Management and Placement Cell of the College in collaboration with WIRC of ICAI and WICASA Goa Branch organized a Career Counselling Programme on Chartered Accountancy on 15th July from 12.00 noon to 1.00 p.m. The Resource Person for the session was CA. Dhanashree Prabhukhanolkar. The objective of this session was to provide the students information about the Chartered Accountancy Course.

Dr. Edwin Barreto, Vice Principal of the College welcomed the gathering. CA. Vinayak Dhumatkar, Secretary of WIRC briefed the students about the ICAI.  Ms. Marjina Shaikh, Assistant Professor, compere for the programme, introduced the Resource Person CA. Dhanashree Prabhukhanolkar.

CA. Dhanashree commenced the session by narrating an annecdote to get the students full attention. She went on to convince the gathering that even an average student can become a Chartered Accountant. She stressed upon the significance of the CA profession and its relevance in various sectors, like finance, taxation auditing, and to the government. CA. Dhanashree outlined the eligibility criteria, syllabus, exam structure and the fee structure of the CA course. She highlighted the importance of hard work and perseverance in completing the course.

She addressed the queries/ doubts of the students in a Q&A session that followed her presentation. Dr. Rodney D’Silva proposed the Vote of Thanks for the session.  A total of 125 students from B.Com Programme attended the session.

Session on “Effective Project Management”

The Department of Computer Science conducted a session on Effective Project Management on July 11th, 2023, from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm. The session specifically targeted the SY and TY BCA & B.Voc.(ST) students. The Resource Person for the session was Ms. Poonam Narvekar, Chief Technology Officer of Umang Software.

To commence the session, Dr. Edwin Barreto, the Vice Principal, introduced the Resource Person and her team. Dr. Barreto highlighted the significance of workshops like these, emphasizing the importance of keeping students informed about the latest technological advancements.

Ms. Poonam Narvekar began by discussing the specific student projects for BCA (Bachelor of Computer Applications) and OJT (On-the-Job Training) for B.Voc.(ST). Ms. Narvekar then proceeded to cover the basics of project management, starting with an overview of the different phases of a project. She explained the roles and responsibilities of project managers and emphasized the importance of thorough planning and effective communication throughout the project lifecycle. The session also covered two popular project management methodologies, namely Agile Methodology and Waterfall model. Ms. Narvekar explained the key principles, benefits, and limitations of each approach, enabling students to grasp the differences and determine their relevance in different project scenarios.

Towards the end of the session, a Q&A round was conducted, allowing students to seek clarification and ask questions related to Project Management. This interactive session provided an opportunity for students to engage with the topic and further enhance their understanding.

The session concluded with a Vote of Thanks proposed by student Malik Rehan, expressing gratitude to Ms. Poonam Narvekar for sharing her knowledge and insights. A total of 125 students and 5 faculty members benefited from attending this informative and engaging session. Overall, the session proved to be valuable in helping students grasp the practical aspects of Project Management and its relevance to their academic and professional endeavors.

PG Club Activity: Screening of the Movie “The Pursuit of Happyness”

The Post Graduate Department of Commerce screened the movie ‘The Pursuit of Happyness’ on 8th July 2023 between 11.30 am to 1.30 pm in the classroom T- 304 as a part of the PG Club Activity. The purpose of screening this film was to help the students understand the values of persistence and hard work in achieving their dreams.

Ms. Twinkle Fernandes, the Programme Coordinator, greeted the students and provided them with a brief insight into the movie ‘The Pursuit of Happyness.’ The movie is based on the life of Mr. Christopher Gardner, a salesman of bone density scanners, who finds hope even at rock bottom and manages to build a good life for himself and his son. As he attempts to do so, he had to fight several battles and hardships at different phases of his life. Christopher narrates the 6 stages or phases of his life namely Riding the bus, Being stupid, Money, Internship, Paying Taxes and Happiness.

The movie’s powerful message resonated with the students, reminding them that having a vision or dream is only the beginning; the key lies in relentlessly pursuing it and never giving up. As Commerce students, they were encouraged to set ambitious goals and work diligently towards them, even when things don’t go as planned. As young and innovative thinkers, the students were encouraged to explore new concepts and come up with creative solutions to address societal problems, thus capturing the attention of their target audience. The movie highlighted the significance of both hard work and smart work. While dedicated efforts are crucial, students were also urged to leverage their unique skills and strengths to their advantage, significantly enhancing their chances of achieving their goals.

A total of 56 students attended the movie screening with great enthusiasm.

Investor Hub Activity 3

FY BBA(FS) students from the Department of Management Studies organized an Investor Hub activity for all the students of BBA(FS) and BBA on 8th July 2023. The event aimed to foster engagement, learning, and teamwork among the students. The Investor Hub activity took place from 10:30 am to 12:00 pm and consisted of two exciting activities: “Codesprint: Race to the Finish Line” and “Treasure Trail: Uncover the Hidden Reaches.”

The first round of the Investor Hub activity was the “Codesprint: Race to the Finish Line.” The participating students were divided into eight teams for the initial round of coding challenges. Each team was given a word and a corresponding code. The teams had to decipher the code and provide the correct code for the next word given to them. This activity tested the students’ coding skills, logical thinking, and ability to quickly analyze patterns. The teams competed against each other to finish the race and reach the final destination.

After the conclusion of the Codesprint round, the top-performing teams advanced to the second round, known as the “Treasure Hunt: Uncover the Hidden Reaches.” Out of the initial eight teams, four teams qualified for this round based on their performance in coding. In this round, the teams embarked on a thrilling treasure hunt adventure. The second round commenced with an interesting coding question presented to the four qualifying teams. The team that successfully solved the coding challenge was given the opportunity to go out first in search of clues for the treasure hunt. The remaining three teams were given a riddle related to Business Management, Finance, or Accounts. They had to correctly guess the answer to the riddle, which would guide them to search for the next clue. This activity not only tested the students’ problem-solving abilities but also their knowledge in various business-related areas. The riddles in the Treasure Trail activity were carefully crafted to incorporate various topics, such as financial statements, budgeting, investment analysis, and financial ratios. The students had to utilize their knowledge and critical thinking skills to interpret the riddles and proceed in the search for hidden clues.

The Investor Hub activity witnessed active participation from all the students. A total of 82 students (eight teams for the initial coding round and four teams for the treasure trail) enthusiastically engaged in the activities, showcasing their coding skills, teamwork, and business knowledge. The students demonstrated high levels of energy, competitive spirit, and eagerness to learn throughout the event.

Towards the end of the Investor Hub activity, the winning team and runner-up team were awarded prizes, acknowledging their exceptional performance. The event concluded at 12:00 noon, leaving a positive and lasting impression on the participants.

Badminton Intramural Tournament (Men & Women) Singles

The Department of Physical Education and Sports organized a Badminton Men and Women Singles Intramural Tournament on July 5th, 7th, and 8th, 2023. The tournament took place in the Multipurpose Hall starting from 12:15 pm onwards. A total of 55 men and 36 women participated in the tournament. The tournament began with a briefing of the game’s rules by Dr. Ajinkya Kudtarkar, the College Director of Physical Education & Sports.

The tournament followed a knockout format, and the fixtures were determined by a random draw. All preliminary round matches were played as a single set of 15 points in both categories. The semifinals, third-place match, and finals were played as three sets, with each set consisting of 15 points for both men and women.

Library Orientation for First Year Students of all Programmes

The Department of Library and Information Science conducted a comprehensive Library Orientation session for all First Year students from 26th June to 7th July 2023. A total of 301 students were oriented across all programmes. This session aimed to familiarize the students with various library services and e-resources. During the orientation, students were introduced to the library and its basic services. They were informed about the Library’s working hours and the different sections it comprises. Detailed information was provided about the vast collection of books and resources available in the library, including periodicals, magazines, and newspapers that are regularly subscribed to. In addition to the physical resources, students were also made aware of the range of Library services and facilities offered. This included topics such as borrowing rights, overdue charges (library fines), book location and retrieval methods, and the use of the Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC). The orientation covered essential Library rules and guidelines, as well as the various ICT-enabled services available, such as utilizing QR codes for accessing library services.

Furthermore, students were educated about accessing electronic resources through the Library. Once registered with the Library, students gained open access to a variety of e-resources such as Indiastat, N-LIST, and NDLI. These resources encompassed e-books, e-journals, e-papers, and other materials that could greatly support their studies, research, and references. Students were instructed on how to log in using their user IDs and passwords to fully utilize these digital resources.

Students were encouraged to actively participate in Library activities and maximize the utilization of the rich resources available. They were also advised to visit the College website to explore additional resource facilities. Specifically, they were directed to the library section on the College website to gain a deeper understanding of the ICT-based services explained during the orientation.

Financial Literacy Programme

The Department of Commerce and Management in association with SBI and NABARD organized a Financial Literacy Programme on 4th July 2023 in the College campus. The Resource Person for the session was Mr. Prasad Kamat, Assistant General Manager, SBI Panaji Branch and his team.

The Resource Persons discussed and enlightened the students about the various Social Security Schemes of the Government of India which are available to all citizens of the country. The special focus of the session was creating awareness about the Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana and Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana.  They informed that both these life/ accident insurance products are available at very nominal premiums and auto renewal options.

The Resource Persons clarified various doubts in the minds of the students pertaining to these social security schemes. A total of 190 students from all the undergraduate programmes attended the session. Dr. Edwin Barreto and Mr. Ainsley Bernard were the teachers in charge of the session.

Investor Hub Activity 2

The Department of Management Studies organized an Investor Hub activity on Saturday, July 1, 2023. The first activity was “Three Truths Two Lies” which commenced at 11:30 am in the F 403 class. The participants, consisting of FY, SY, and TY BBA(FS) students, were divided into three groups. Each group was given the task of creating five recent news articles related to business & finance. Out of the five articles, two had to be false, while the remaining three had to be accurate.

Once the groups completed their articles, they were instructed to share them with the other two groups. The objective was to identify the false articles among the shared ones. This activity aimed to assess the participants’ ability to discern genuine news from fake news in the business and finance domain.

The second activity was “Biz Whiz: Current Affairs Picture Match-Up”. The participants were presented with 12 current affairs-related statements with the corresponding pictures.  The task was to correctly match each statement with the appropriate picture. The group with the highest number of correct matches was declared the winner. This activity aimed to evaluate the participants’ knowledge and understanding of current affairs in the business and finance sector.

During the “Three Truths Two Lies” activity, the students actively engaged within their groups, brainstorming and creating relevant news articles. The participants demonstrated their critical thinking skills and the ability to differentiate between accurate and false news in the business and finance domain. In the Current Affairs Matching activity, the students showcased their awareness of current events and applied their knowledge to match the statements with the corresponding pictures. The students’ participated with enthusiasm and eagerness to learn and succeed.

Physical Fitness Camp

The Department of Physical Education & Sports recently organized a Fitness Camp for students from 26th June to 1st July, 2023. The camp was held at the Multipurpose Hall and G.R Kare Law College ground between 3:00 pm to 4:30 pm. 80 students registered and 60 students actively participated in the camp.

The primary objective of the fitness camp was to engage students in physical activities following the summer vacation. The camp aimed to rekindle their interest in fitness and promote their overall well-being.

Various activities were conducted during the fitness camp, including recreational games such as Builder and Bulldogger, different relays, Chain game, Coordination game, Tag game, and 5 passes ball. These games were designed to generate enthusiasm among students for participating in physical activities while simultaneously enhancing their fitness levels. The fitness camp also focused on developing components of Health-Related Physical Fitness (HRPF), which included cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, and body composition. Special attention was given to teaching fundamental, locomotive, and non-locomotive movements to the students. These movements play a crucial role in correcting posture and preventing sports injuries.

Dr. Ajinkya Kudtarkar, College Director of Physical Education and Sports, and Mr. Saurabh Raikar, Instructor in Physical Education, conducted the fitness camp. Overall, the Fitness Camp provided an opportunity for students to actively engage in physical activities and instilled a sense of interest and enthusiasm for physical fitness among the participants.

DEEKSHARAMBH 2023 – Student Induction & Orientation Programme

“Deeksharambh – 2023”, an Induction program was conducted for the First Year students of the B.Com programme. It commenced on June 20th, 2023, and concluded on July 11th. The program took place in the FY B.Com classrooms of the College. During this period, the Convenors of various clubs and committees, along with the College Counsellor and College Librarian, conducted orientation sessions for the First-Year students in their respective classrooms.

Vice-Principal, Dr. Edwin Barreto addressed the students and emphasized the importance of discipline in their academic journey. Dr. Shami Pai provided comprehensive information about the mentoring process, attendance policies, remedial classes, and available scholarships. She also gave an overview of the E-Cell and Incubation Centre, encouraging students to explore entrepreneurial opportunities.

Dr. Lira M. Gama explained the Examination Rules and regulations, ensuring students were well-informed about the examination procedures and guidelines. Dr. Maithili Naik discussed the significance of student bodies in the College and the opportunities for students to actively participate in extracurricular and co-curricular activities. Dr. Ajinkya Kudtarkar shed light on sports activities and the College’s commitment to promoting a healthy and active lifestyle among students. Dr. Lina Sadekar introduced the Students’ Consumer Cooperative Society, informing students about its benefits and services.

Ms. Swati Bhat shared insights into the Young Inspirational Network, encouraging students to be part of a supportive community that fosters growth and inspiration. She also informed the students about the various certificate courses organized by the College. Mr. Gajanan Haldankar discussed the National Service Scheme (NSS) and its role in community service and social development. Dr. Rodney D’Silva provided information about the Institution Innovation Council (IIC) and Placement Cell of the College, guiding students on career-related opportunities and industry tie-ups.

Ms. Eshani Bakhle, the College Counsellor, sensitized students about mental health, common challenges faced during college years, and the resources available for counseling and support. The students were informed about individual Counseling sessions, joint sessions, and other activities conducted by the Counseling cell to ensure their overall well-being. College Librarian, Ms. Preeta Gunagi, conducted library orientation, acquainting the students with various library services and e-resources available. The orientation covered library working hours, different sections, collections, periodicals, magazines, and newspapers subscribed by the library, as well as other facilities and services.

The Orientation Sessions aimed to provide clarity to the First-Year Students about the objectives of the college activities and their roles as a student in their academic and overall development. The sessions were designed to create a strong foundation for the students’ college journey, empowering them to make the most of their academic and personal growth opportunities. Dr. Shami Pai, B.Com Programme Coordinator was the overall incharge of Deeksharambh.
