Awareness Session on Exploring Lucrative Career Opportunities in the Insurance Sector

The Career Cell organised an awareness session on the topic ‘Exploring Lucrative Career Opportunities in the Insurance Sector’ on 5th August 2023 from 11.15am to 12.30 pm  in Room no F-103.

The primary objectives of this session were to:

Introduce students to the insurance sector and its significance in the global economy.
Highlight the diverse range of career opportunities within the insurance industry.
Educate students about the skills and qualifications required for different roles in the insurance sector.
Address misconceptions and myths about insurance careers.

The Resource Persons for the session were: Ms. Sneha Lawande and Mr. Sabino Dias, both of who are Agency Development Managers at Max Life Insurance Company. Ms. Sneha Lawande is an alumna of the College

At the outset, Ms. Pooja Shanbhag, Convenor of the Career Cell addressed the gathering and welcomed the Resource Persons. She highlighted the role and objectives of the Career Cell and explained the significance of attending such awareness sessions. Ms. Vaishnavi Verenkar, student of TY B.Com introduced the Resource Persons to the audience.

In the first segment Ms. Lawande focused on providing a comprehensive overview of the insurance sector, its functions, and its role in risk management. She discussed the importance of insurance in the life of an individual. The importance of understanding different insurance categories to meet specific needs was also emphasized.

The second segment of the session focused on highlighting a wide array of career paths available within the insurance industry. Students were introduced to roles such as risk analysts, sales agents, business development managers, insurance marketers, etc. Many real-life examples of successful professionals in these roles were shared. Mr. Dias also emphasized on the essential skills, qualifications and certifications that different insurance roles demand. Overall the session was very informative and interactive. Students got an opportunity to ask questions and seek career advice from the insurance professionals. Thus the session was successful in motivating students to consider insurance as a viable and promising career option after graduation. The session ended at 12.30 pm with a Vote of Thanks proposed by the convenor. 50 students attended the session.

TechTrendz Club Activity

The TechTrendz Club of the Department of Computer Science organised a ‘Word Play’ competition on 5th August 2023 from 11:15 am to 12:15 pm.

20 students representing the BCA and B.Voc(ST) programs participated in the competition. Mr. Dhruv Naik, a student from FY BCA-A, served as the Student Coordinator, ensuring smooth communication and coordination between the participants and the organizing team. Mr. Khushal Naik from FY B.Voc.(ST) won the first place and Mr. Showil Rebello from FY B.Voc.(ST) secured the Runners up position.

The event was coordinated by Ms. Rama Borkar and Ms. Rakshavi Dessai under the guidance of Ms. Annette Santimano, Incharge of TechTrendz Club.

TechTrendz Club Activity

The TechTrendz Club of the Department of Computer Science organized a competition entitled “Logo Mania and Tag-of-War” on 5th August, 2023 in Lab 3 from 12:15 to 1:15 pm.14 students from BCA and B.Voc.(ST) participated in the competition.

The overall event planning was done by Ms. Annette Santimano, TechTrendz in-charge, which was then coordinated and executed by Ms. Karishma Tuenkar and Ms. Zakiya Tahir. There were 2 rounds – Qualifier round and Final round.

In the first round, every participant had to identify and answer a total of 15 logos/taglines of various IT-based companies. The top 5 participants moved to the next round.

The second round featured a buzzer-based format. Participants who qualified for this round were required to recognize and respond to a different set of 15 logos/taglines from various IT companies. This round resulted in a tie between two participants, which was resolved by answering a question related to a logo. Mr. Kushal Naik from FY B.Voc.(ST) won the competition and Mr. Rishab Arolkar from SY BCA-B, secured the runner-up position.

Hands-on Workshop on “Animation for New Media”

The Career Cell of the Department of Computer Science organized a Hands-on Workshop on “Animation for New Media” on 04th August 2023 from 10:15 am to 1:15 pm., for the students of BCA and B.Voc.(ST). The Resource Person was Mr. Sandesh Gaundalkar.

The objective of the workshop was to introduce participants to the fundamental concepts of animation and story-boarding. It also enabled the participants to create engaging and effective animations for digital platforms.

The workshop emphasized the importance of story-boarding in the animation process for coherent and impact storytelling. It also fostered creativity and innovative thinking in the realm of animation for new media. The topics covered included the definition and history of animation, motion and timing principles, animation techniques (2D, 3D, stop-motion), Animation Principles, Storyboarding Fundamentals, and coherent visual narrative creation. Participants delved into animation tools and software, with an overview of popular choices like Adobe Animate and Blender. They explored the basics of software interface and functionality, and learned to plan animation sequences.

The session culminated with hands-on animation exercises, where participants created short animations based on developed storyboards. The workshop amalgamated theoretical concepts with practical exercises, fostering creativity, innovation, and proficiency in crafting compelling animations for diverse digital platforms. 18 students attended the workshop.

Bridge Course in Basics of Accounting

The Department of Commerce and Management organized a One-week Bridge Course on Basics of Accounting for First Year students of the College. The primary objective behind this initiative was to offer exposure to those students who had not been introduced to Book-keeping or Accounting concepts during their 12th-grade education. The course took place from 21st July to 05th August 2023.

The course curriculum was meticulously designed to equip students with a strong foundation in Accounting. Over the duration of the program, students were introduced to essential concepts such as the definition and goals of Accounting, the Accounting process, recording journal entries, ledger maintenance, preparation of trial balances, and the compilation of Final Accounts.

04 students completed the course, which was  conducted by Ms. Marjina Shaikh, Assistant Professor in Commerce.

Indian Organ Donation Day

The NSS Unit of the College celebrated Indian Organ Donation Day on 3rd August 2023. The main aim of celebrating this day was to raise awareness about organ donation and encourage people to donate organs and tissues after death. It also aimed to instill the value of organ donation in people’s lives.

All the faculty members and students took an organ donation pledge in their respective classes. Subsequently, NSS volunteers conducted awareness campaigns about organ donation in their local communities. During these campaigns, our NSS volunteers explained the significance of organ donation and its potential to save lives. They also provided accurate information to dispel myths and misconceptions related to organ donation. Finally, they detailed the procedures and processes involved in organ donation and encouraged individuals to register as organ donors.

24 volunteers participated in the awareness drive. The activity was coordinated by Mr. Sanjay Velip, NSS PO-Incharge, Ms. Ashwina Volvoikar, NSS PO, and Ms. Akshada Gaonkar, NSS PO.

Guest Lecture in HRM

The Department of Management Studies organized a guest lecture in Human Resource Management on the topic “Navigating the latest trends in recruitment, training and performance management” on 29th July 2023. The Resource Person for the session was Mr. Varun Timble. 68 BBA students attended the session.

The session commenced with a comprehensive discussion on the functions of the Human Resources Department in the real world, shedding light on the daily challenges faced by the HR domain. These challenges encompass various aspects such as acquisition, fairness, training, appraisal, compensation, labor relations, and health and safety. The speaker delved into each of these verticals, providing insights into their practical applications within the corporate sphere. During the session, tools like competency analysis and training matrix were introduced to the students, and concepts like Key Performance Indicators (KPI) were exemplified using templates.

The subsequent topic that the speaker addressed was the profound impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on HR and its far-reaching effects. Concluding the session, he also expounded upon the diverse career opportunities and potential career paths in the field of HR for BBA graduates. The students gained valuable awareness about the array of job roles and titles available in this domain. A Q&A session followed, during which the speaker enthusiastically responded to numerous queries posed by the students.

To conclude the session, a Vote of Thanks was extended by Ms. Heizel Fernandes. The session was organised by Mr. Omkar Pawaskar, the teacher in-charge.

An Awareness Session on Organ Donation

To commemorate Indian Organ Donation Day, the NSS Unit of the College in collaboration with Rotary Club of Margao Midtown organized an awareness session on organ donation on 31st July 2023. 142 NSS Volunteers attended the session. The main aim of conducting the session was to educate students about the importance of organ donation, dispelling myths and misconceptions, and encouraging them to consider becoming organ donors.

The session began with the welcome address delivered by Prof. Prita D. Mallya, Principal of the College. Dr. Preeti Varghese, Joint Director of State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (SOTTO) and Ms. Pratiksha Naik, Transplant Coordinator of SOTTO were the Resource Persons for the session.

During the session, Ms. Pratiksha Naik passionately discussed the significance of organ donation, shedding light on the severe shortage of organs available for transplantation and its life-saving impact on patients in need. Dr. Preeti Varghese addressed common myths and misconceptions surrounding organ donation. She dispelled falsehoods such as organ removal before death and unfair treatment of donors, providing accurate information to encourage informed decision-making. Dr. Preeti also explained the process and procedures of organ donation, covering both living and deceased donation. Legal aspects and the crucial role of medical professionals were emphasized. The session included personal testimonials from individuals who had undergone organ transplants or had been closely involved in the donation process, adding a human touch to the importance of this life-changing act.

The session ended at 12:30 pm with a Vote of Thanks delivered by Ms. Giselle Colaco, student of SY B.Com. The activity was coordinated by Mr. Sanjay Velip, NSS PO Incharge, Ms. Ashwina Volvoikar, NSS PO and Ms. Akshada Gaonkar NSS PO.

Orientation session on TechTrendz, Brainstorming Session and Competition for Competitions

The Department of Computer Science organized an Orientation Session for the students of BCA and B.Voc.(ST) to acquaint the students with the TechTrendz Club, its purpose, and the various events conducted in the past. The orientation was conducted by Ms. Annette Santimano, the teacher in-charge of TechTrendz Club. Several teachers from the Department also attended the orientation.

Following the orientation, Brainstorming activity was conducted for the BCA and B.Voc.(ST) students, during which they explored diverse ideas for various competitions under three categories: Multimedia Group, Future Skill Group, and Software Development Group.

63 students conceptualized and drafted 11 unique ideas ready for execution. The competitions formulated by the students will be considered as entries for the first TechTrendz competition for AY 2023-24, titled “Competition for Competitions“. The teachers in charge of the competition are Mr. Andre Pacheco and Mr. Ramkrishna Reddy.

The outcome of the Brainstorming activity was to ignite the students’ minds and spirit, preparing them for various in-house Information Technology-based competitions.

Industry Interaction Programme Series I: Session on ‘Branding Industry in Goa – Expert Insights’

The PG Department of Commerce organized an Industry Interaction Programme (IIP) Series – 1; Session on ‘Branding Industry in Goa – Expert Insights’ on 29thJuly 2023 between 11:30 am and 12:30 p.m. in the Smart Classroom. The Resource Person for the session was Ms. Rina Barreto Shankar, Founder of Cheree Tree Concepts, Panaji. The main objective of the session was to understand the importance of Branding and the potential of the branding industry in Goa. Asst. Prof. Ms. Valencia Baptista welcomed the students to the IIP Session and Ms. Petalia Coutinho of M.Com-II introduced the Resource Person.

Ms. Rina began the session with a concise explanation of the concept of Branding. She emphasized the importance of creating awareness about products in the market and how branding is an effective way to achieve this goal. Ms. Rina introduced various platforms to display brands, including hoardings, social media, television, and radio, among others. She encouraged students to excel in the field of branding by highlighting the significance of innovation and creativity. Ms. Rina also enlightened the students about the diverse job opportunities available in the branding industry. She then provided insights into the current status of branding in Goa and presented an overview of her business, Cheree Tree Concepts, which specializes in helping people develop their brand identity.

During the session, Ms. Rina engaged the students in interactive demonstrations, conducting a branding quiz and guiding them to teach a specific topic on branding. The purpose of this activity was twofold – to assess the students’ understanding of branding concepts and to demonstrate the importance of effective communication in brand interaction. Mr. Shankar, Director of Cheree Tree Concepts accompanied Ms. Rina and elaborated on how advertisements play a pivotal role in establishing an emotional connection with the audience.

Overall, the session proved to be an insightful and engaging experience, shedding light on the world of branding and its profound impact on the business world. Miss Shine D’Souza of M.Com-II proposed the Vote of Thanks. 34 students of M.Com Part I and II attended the session.
