Visit to RBI

The Department of Management Studies organized an educational visit to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) branch in Panjim on 22nd August 2023. The visit aimed to provide students with practical insights into the workings of the Central bank and to broaden their understanding of currency management, including Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC).

40 students, along with two faculty members, Ms. Delisha Rebello and Ms. Ashwini Dewari, visited the RBI branch. The group departed from the College campus at 9:30 a.m. to reach the RBI branch in Panjim.

At the RBI branch, the FIDD department warmly welcomed the students and teachers. Asst. Prof. Ms. Ashwini Dewari provided a brief introduction of the students and about their course.

Session 1 was conducted by Avinash, a knowledgeable expert at RBI. He delivered a comprehensive presentation explaining the structure and functions of the Reserve Bank of India. Avinash’s presentation shed light on the critical role that the RBI plays in the Indian financial system and the broader economy.

Session 2 was on Currency Management. Mr. Praful Thakur led this session, focusing on the intricate world of currency management. He provided valuable insights into how the RBI manages physical currency, including printing, distribution, and the security measures in place.

The final session of the day was conducted by Ms. Deepika Thakur, who provided a detailed explanation of Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC). Her presentation covered the concept, benefits, and potential impact of CBDC on the financial ecosystem. Students were also provided valuable insights into different types of financial frauds and the actions that should be taken if an individual becomes a victim of such fraud. The session covered various frauds, including online scams.

The visit not only expanded the students’ knowledge about the central banking system but also provided them with insights into the evolving landscape of currency management and digital currencies.

Bootcamp on Innovation, Prototyping & Startups

The Institution’s Innovation Cell (IIC) in collaboration with the Goa State Innovation Council organized a Bootcamp on Innovation, Prototyping & Startups on 22nd August 22, 2023. The objective of the Bootcamp was to foster a culture of innovation, encourage entrepreneurial thinking, and provide valuable insights into the world of startups. The bootcamp commenced at 10:00 AM and continued until 12:00 PM.

The Resource Persons for the Bootcamp were:

Sushant Surlekar: A mentor and motivational speaker
Haroon Sayed: A startup promoter
Shivraj Naik: Mentor prototyping lab, GSIC

Mr. Sushant Surlekar briefed the students on how to convert an idea into an enterprise. Mr. Haroon Sayed a technopreneur, spoke about his enterprise Code Relix LLP and his journey as an entrepreneur. Mr. Shivraj Naik enlightened the students on the role of Goa State Innovation Council(GSIC) in the entrepreneurship ecosystem in Goa. He also made them aware of the schemes and financial support offered by GSIC to entrepreneurs.

The bootcamp comprised engaging presentations, interactive discussions, and real-life case studies that brought the concepts to life. Attendees were encouraged to participate actively and ask questions, leading to insightful conversations on innovation, prototyping, and startups. The activity was coordinated by Dr. Rodney D’Silva, Dr. Maithili Naik and Ms. Rakshavi Dessai. 80 students from all Programmes participated in the same.

Career Opportunities for a Cost and Management Accountant in the Corporate Sector

The Career Cell in association with The Institute of Cost Accountants of India -Goa Chapter, organized a comprehensive session on the topic ‘Opportunities for a Cost and Management Accountant in the Corporate Sector’ on 19th August 2023 from 9.00 am to 10.00 am.  The session was facilitated by CMA Shameem Memon. The session aimed to provide valuable insights in the field of cost and management accounting, the benefits of pursuing the CMA course, important job roles and the diverse range of career paths available to CMA professionals. Ms. Pooja Shanbhag, Convenor of the Career cell welcomed the Resource person and addressed the gathering. Ms. Ananya Savalgi, student of T.Y B.Com. introduced the Resource Person to the audience.

The session began with an overview of the ICAI institute and its objectives, chapter networks, core strengths of a CMA profession, significance of cost and management accounting in business decision-making, and how CMA differs from other forms of accounting. Ms. Shameem elaborated on the numerous benefits of becoming a CMA, including enhanced career opportunities, higher earning potential and the ability to contribute strategically to the organizations success. She also discussed the rigorous curriculum, salient features of the course, eligibility criteria, training requirements, fee structure, examination pattern, scholarships and financial aids available to the students.

A significant part of the session was dedicated to exploring various career pathways that CMAs can pursue. The speaker shared real-world examples of CMAs who have excelled in these roles and made significant contributions to various organizations.

Ms. Shameem provided insights into the industries that highly value CMAs, such as finance, healthcare, manufacturing, technology, and more. Participants gained a better understanding of how CMAs play a pivotal role in these industries by providing valuable financial insights and contributing to effective decision-making. The speaker explained the resources available for the registered students to stay updated with the latest industry trends, regulations, and best practices, including networking events, workshops, and online courses. She spoke about the student connect portal, campus placement initiatives, and other value added services provided by the institute.

Participants had the opportunity to ask questions and clarify their doubts about the CMA course. Thus, the session was successful in enlightening the participants about the growing demand for CMAs in various industries due to their expertise in financial planning, analysis, and strategic decision-making. The session ended at 10.00 am with the Vote of Thanks proposed by Dr. Sheetal Arondekar. 40 interested students attended the session and found it to be very informative.

Friendship Day Celebration

The Students’ Council of the College organized Friendship Day for the students on 19th August 2023 to celebrate the spirit of friendship and bond of togetherness. The event was a remarkable platform for students to come together and commemorate the cherished bonds of friendship that thrive within the College community.

The Friendship Day event provided an incredible platform for the students to showcase their talents. The Various competitions under off stage Event category were:

DIY Bracelet Making – DIY Bracelet Making began at 8.30 am in Hall 1. The participants were given 1 hour to make bracelets. There were 28 participants for the competition. The judging criteria were creativity, craftsmanship, overall presentation and adherence to theme. Judges for Bracelet Making were: Ms. Delisha Rebello, Asst. Prof in Commerce and Dr. Monica M. Patil, Asst. Prof in English.
DIY Card Making-DIY Card Making began at 8.30 am in Hall 1. The participants were given 1 hour to make Cards. There were 13 participants for the competition. The Judging criteria were creativity, adherence to theme, craftsmanship and overall presentation. Judges for DIY Card Making were: Ms. Marjina Shaikh, Asst. Prof in Commerce and Ms. Saruka N. Kalgutkar, Asst. Prof in Economics.
Reel Making-Participants were required to make reels of 30 seconds to 1 minute covering both onstage and offstage performances within the campus and submit a suitable caption along with the reel. There were 8 participants for the competition. The Judging criteria were Relevance to topic, Creativity, Presentation and Originality. Judges for Reel Making Competition were: Mr. Ramkrishna Reddy, Asst. Prof in Computer Science and Mr. Omkar Pawaskar, Asst. Prof in Management.

The formal function started at 10.30 am. The Principal in her welcome address set an encouraging tone for the event and emphasized the significance of friendship within the College community. Ms. Saakshi Ganguli and Ms. Mallita Dessai were the Comperes for overall event.

After such a beautiful beginning, the day entered into the main program. The event featured a diverse range of activities like Musical performance by the freshers, Musical Skit by Alrich and Team, Group Dance by Mithali and Team, heartwarming video presentation, Mr. & Ms. Fresher Contest, Duo Dance by Khushanti & Tanvi and Duo Dance by Pavitra & Swetathat captivated the audience and celebrated the essence of friendship.

Finally, the winners of both off-stage and on-stage events were announced, recognizing the efforts and talents of the participants.

The celebration concluded on a grateful note with a Vote of Thanks by Dr. Maithili Naik, the Convenor of the Student Council. Her words expressed appreciation for everyone’s involvement in making the event a resounding success. The Friendship Day celebration was a heartwarming and memorable event that embodied the significance of fostering connections and celebrating friendships. The leadership of Council members and participation of students contributed to the success of the event and the spirit of unity.

Unveiling the Marketing Club

The Department of Management Studies organized a function to unveil the Marketing Club for the students of BBA on 21st August, 2023. The compere for the session was Ms. Heizel Fernandes.

Asst. Professor Omkar Pawaskar unveiled the club name through a video presentation subsequently revealing the club logo designed with an Orange, Black, and White theme. The Vice Principal addressed the gathering, emphasizing the significance of skill development in today’s rapidly evolving world. Asst. Prof. Jayant Panvelkar then provided insights into the club’s inception.

Dr. Abhishek Karmali, Certified Career Counsellor, Corporate Trainer and Motivational speaker was the Chief Guest for the event. Dr. Karmali began his address with a narrative about his career journey and the inspiration behind his entry into the world of entrepreneurship. He shed light on the merits and challenges of entrepreneurship, identifying the individuals who are best suited for this path. His address concluded with an exploration of how his company aids students in making informed career choices.

Asst. Prof. Omkar Pawaskar initiated his address with an anecdote about Harman Lay, the founder of Lay’s. He delved into the club’s objectives, outlining how various activities and events would help achieve each goal. Furthermore, he provided an overview of the forthcoming activities planned by the club. Following this, Ms. Cadence Gracias, a SY BBA student, conducted an engaging quiz focused on prominent concepts and personalities in the realms of marketing and management.

Lastly, to conclude the session SY BBA student Ms. Mizba Xec delivered the Vote of Thanks. Subsequently, students posed questions to Dr. Karmali concerning career choices. The event concluded at 1:30 pm, leaving behind a sense of inspiration and empowerment.

Inter-Class Football Tournament (Men & Women)

The Department of Physical Education and Sports organized an Inter-class Football Tournament for Men and Women from 17th to 19th August 2023. 28 teams – 23 Men’s teams and 5 Women’s teams – participated in the tournament.

The tournament began with an introduction by Dr. Ajinkya Kudtarkar, the College Director of Physical Education and Sports. The matches followed a knockout format, and the match schedule was determined through a draw. Each match consisted of two halves, each lasting 10 minutes, with a 3-minute break in between. The finals were extended to 15 minutes per half.

Millet Food Fest Competition 2023

The Post Graduate Department of Commerce (M.Com) organized an engaging competition on 18th August, 2023to commemorate the International Year of Millets 2023. The event aimed to showcase the benefits of various types of millets through a creative cooking competition for M.Com Part I & II students.

The event was introduced by Miss Petalia from M.Com II. The judges were Dr. Shami Pai and Dr. Lina Sadekar. The evaluation criteria encompassed originality of recipes, skillful incorporation of millets, visual appeal, plate composition, nutritional value, and overall presentation. Participation comprised of three teams from M.Com Part I and seven teams from M.Com Part II. The culinary offerings were diverse, including dishes such as ragirotis, moongladoos, millet momos, godshe, millet brownies, cupcakes, and millet burger cutlets. A brief presentation underscored the significance of millets and the celebration of the International Year of Millets.

Judges sampled each dish and selected the top three winners. Miss Vaishnavi Naik and Mr. Zohaid Shaikh from M.Com II secured the first place with their creations, ‘millet brownies’ and ‘millet burger cutlets’. Second place was awarded to Miss Shaheen Sayed, Miss Shabana Sayed, Miss Sasha Naik, and Miss Ruksar Shaikh from M.Com Part II for their dish ‘millet momos’. Miss Roshni Khatun and Ibrahim Papanavar from M.Com Part II clinched the third place with their dish ‘ragi roti’.

Mr. Zohaid Shaikh from M.Com Part II extended the Vote of Thanks.

Workshop on “Creative Design Mastery: Canva and AI Techniques”

The Department of Computer Science organized a hands-on workshop for the students of Higher Secondary Schools in South Goa on 17th August 2023 from 11:30 am to 2:00 pm in the college Lab. The Workshop was on “Creative Design Mastery: Canva and AI Techniques”. The Resource person was Mr. Ramkrishna Reddy, Asst. Professor, Dept. of Computer Science. The primary objective of this workshop was to provide students with training in utilizing Canva, an online and free graphic design platform. Canva is widely employed for creating a diverse range of designs, including invitations, business cards, Instagram posts, presentations, and various other visual content.

The workshop commenced with a warm welcome from the Principal, Prof. Prita D. Mallya. Following this, the Resource Person was introduced by the faculty Incharge, Ms. Rama Borkar.

The workshop delved into several crucial topics, which included:

Introduction to Graphic Design and Tools: Gaining Insights into the Basics of Graphic Design, Exploring Canva’s Interface, Tools, and Features, and a Primer on Artificial Intelligence in Design.
Introduction to AI Tools for Design: Offering an Overview of AI-Powered Design Tools, Understanding How AI Elevates Creativity and Productivity, Engaging in Hands-On Activities to Leverage AI for Design Enhancements, and Exploring Stable Diffusion using Mid Journey and MS Designer.
Designing Effective Google Forms: Introduction to Google Forms, Understanding its Interface and Features, and Learning to Design User-Friendly and Visually Attractive Forms.

The course was offered to students free of charge, and upon its completion, participants received an e-certificate. A total of 19 students from 7 Higher Secondary Schools benefited from the insightful workshop.

Patriotic Singing Competition

The Cultural Council of the College organized an Inter Department Patriotic Singing Competition on August 17, 2023. The competition was a remarkable showcase of talent and patriotism, with students from various departments participating wholeheartedly.

The competition began at 11:30 am with Ms. Abha Naik, a student from SY B.Com, taking up the role of the compere for the day. Her spirited hosting set the stage for a day filled with patriotic enthusiasm and musical excellence.

The Principal, Prof. Prita D. Mallya, in her welcome address emphasized the significance of celebrating our nation’s rich cultural heritage through music. Her words of encouragement set a positive tone for the event.

Two musicians, Ms. Usha Gauncar, LDC in RMS Higher Secondary, and Mr. Rahul Ratnakar Naik, were the judges for the competition. Ms. Pavitra Gadkar introduced them to the audience, highlighting their expertise in evaluating musical performances.

A total of seven teams participated in the competition, representing their respective departments. The teams included Shershah, Uri, Raazi, Kranti, Swades, Gold, and Border. After captivating performances by all the teams, the winners were announced by Assistant Professor Ms. Delisha Rebello, who commended all the participants for their dedication and enthusiasm. Team Raazi from the B.Com Programme emerged as the winners of the competition, securing first place. The first runners-up were Team Kranti, representing the Postgraduate Department of Commerce. The second runners-up position was claimed by Team Border from the Department of Management Studies by BBA(FS) students. The competition not only showcased the musical talent of the students but also their deep love for the nation.

The event ended at 1:15 pm as Ms. Rubi Mahato delivered the Vote of Thanks.

Medicinal plant gardening ‘SANJEEVANI VATIKA’

The Green Club (Vasundhara) of the College organized medicinal plant gardening activity ‘Sanjeevani Vatika’ on 14th August 2023. The objective of this activity was to create an educational platform for students to learn about medicinal plants and their applications, encourage sustainable practices and increase awareness of the importance of preserving indigenous plant species, to foster an environment of experiential learning, connecting theoretical knowledge with practical applications, to contribute to the College’s greening efforts and enhance the aesthetic appeal of the campus, to create awareness of conservation and traditional uses of herbs and medicinal plants to students and staff, and to also be a place where students and others can learn how to identify and conserve these important plants.

A suitable location on the College campus was identified for the medicinal plant garden. Factors considered for this selection included sunlight exposure, soil quality, and accessibility.A diverse array of medicinal plants such as Tulsi, Brahmi, Haldi, Aloe Vera etc. representing various species and their health benefits were brought by faculty members and students as a measure to contribute to this initiative. 07 participants took part in this activity.
