National Sports Day

The Department of Physical Education & Sports and the NSS unit jointly celebrated National Sports Day by conducting various activities on 29th August, 2023 for all students. These activities aimed to promote physical fitness, encourage a healthy lifestyle, and raise awareness about the importance of regular exercise.

The program commenced with the Fit India Pledge, administered by Principal Dr. Prita D. Mallya. 185 students and 17 teachers took the Fit India Pledge. Following this, the Fit India Walk/Run was initiated, with the flag-off ceremony by the Principal. The Walk/Run started from the College Main Gate and continued to Zudio Mall on Benaulim road. 185 students and 4 faculty members participated in the Walk/Run, covering a distance of approximately 4 km.

At 10:30 am, the Sports Council, under the guidance of the Department of Physical Education & Sports and the NSS unit, organized various recreational sports for the members of the 3 Student bodies of the College. The sports included Tug of War, Touch ball, and Dog and the Bone.

The celebration of National Sports Day fostered a spirit of fitness, teamwork, and healthy living among our students, reinforcing the importance of physical well-being in their lives.

‘Mighty Millets- Shri Anna Quiz’

The PG Club of the Post Graduate Department of Commerce organized ‘Mighty Millets- Shri Anna Quiz’ to commemorate International Year of Millets on 26th August 2023 from 11.30 am to 1.30 am in Classroom T-301. The students of M.Com Part II put in efforts to organize the quiz for the M.Com Part I students. The objective of the quiz was to test the knowledge of the participants as well as to make the audience aware of the goodness of millets and their health benefits.

The programme commenced with a brief insight of the Quiz given by the Programme Coordinator, Ms. Twinkle Fernandes. Shruti Pai Khot and Roshni Khatun were the comperes. 8 Teams comprising of 2 students in each team from M.Com Part I participated in the millet-based quiz. The details of the teams are: Quick Wits (Zia Fernandes and Ambar Dalal), Brain storm (Soumya Shetti and Disha Gaonkar),  Fact Flare (Sushmeeta Chauwan and Saloni Harjan), Quiz Mates (Anrich Rodrigues and Vanshita Naik), Infoking (Glyn Gomindes and Rowena Fernandes), Thought Snap (Siya Naik and Siddhi Haldankar), Smartspeaker (Alrich Fernandes and Aemisha Azavedo) and IQ-Squad (Lisanna Fernandes and Deepika Kholkar).

The quiz was held in four rounds. Mr. Zohaid Shaikh was the quiz master. The first two rounds were elimination rounds. The details of the rounds were as under:

1st Round: Elimination Round

Ms. Shaheen Sayad narrated the rules of Round 1. In this round, the participants’ knowledge was tested through Multiple Choice Questions. Each team was asked 5 questions where each correct answer was awarded 5 points with no negative marking. The six top scoring teams qualified for Round 2.

2nd Round: Elimination Round

Ms. Shabana Sayyed narrated the rules of Round 2. In this round, each team was asked two Multiple Choice Questions, where each correct answer was awarded 10 points with no negative marking. The scores of Round 1 and Round 2 were summed and the four top scoring teams qualified for Round 3 and 4.

3rd Round: Buzzer Round

The rules of this round were narrated by Mr. Dheeraj Goyal. The participating teams were tested through identification of millets and millet plants.  The participants were required to hit the buzzer if they know the answer and the team giving the correct answer was awarded 10 points while a wrong answer resulted in a deduction of 5 points.

4th Round: Rapid Fire Round

This was the final round, where Ms. Vaishnavi Naik Gaonkar narrated the rules of this round. In this round, the teams had to answer maximum of 10 questions correctly within a time span of two minutes with no negative marking. Every correct answer was awarded 5 points.

Team Smartspeakers – Alrich Fernandes and Aemisha Azavedo won the Mighty Millets – Shri Anna Quiz. Quiz Mates – Anrich Rodrigues and Vanshitaa Naik emerged as the first runners up, while Quick Wits – Zia Fernandes and Ambar Dalal emerged as second runners up.

The audience were also engaged via spot questions. Ms. Sakshi Tari, Mr. Ayan Bepari, Ms. Siddhi Haldankar and Ms. Lisanna Fernandes won the spot prizes. The quiz ended at 1.45 p.m. with Vote of Thanks delivered by Ms. Lisanna Fernandes. Around 40 students from M.Com participated in the quiz with great enthusiasm. Effective Compering and Public Speaking Skills

The Department of Management Studies organized a Guest Lecture on Effective Compèring and Public Speaking Skills under the course Compering and Anchoring Skills on 25th August 2023. The Session aimed to provide the students with a learning opportunity to further enhance their compèring and public speaking skills and encourage the students to pursue a career in public speaking.

The compère Ms. Ayesha Rafiq welcomed the guest, faculty members and participants on behalf of the Department, she also recognized the significance of public speaking skills in professional scenarios. The Resource Person for this session was Mr. Shailesh Rajput, a well-known Compère who is highly recognized for his skills across the state. The Session commenced with an introduction of the guest by Ms. Steral Fernandes, she highlighted the vast experience and expertise of Mr. Rajput.

The guest speaker addressed and captured the attention of the eager audience. The lecture covered topics like Voice Modulation, where he shed light upon the important factors of voice modulation. He also addressed the significance of Presence of Mind, Spontaneity and Body Movements. These included techniques of relaxation, hand gestures, positive visualization as well as ways to take charge of one’s appearance.

Students were enlightened about various job opportunities in this field along with the possible challenges which may occur in near future. The guest lecture concluded with a Q&A session, where participants enthusiastically put forward their questions and queries to the speaker, which further enriched their knowledge.

The session proved to be an insightful and engaging experience for around 208 attendees. This newfound enthusiasm of cultivating effective communication skills shall encourage them to participate in public speaking opportunities. Mr. Anil Pradhan proposed the Vote of Thanks to express gratitude to Mr. Shailesh Rajput for sharing his valuable time and expertise with all the students.

Mentoring Orientation for Mentors

The Student Welfare Cell of the College organized a Mentoring Orientation on 25th August 2023, for the newly appointed faculty members for the Academic Year 2023-24. The Resource Person for the session was Ms. Eshani Bakhale, College Counsellor.

The session commenced with Ms. Eshani Bakhale providing insights into the concept and significance of mentoring in the 21st century for students. She shared comprehensive guidelines for mentors, encompassing mentoring sessions and record-keeping protocols. Various stages of mentoring were elaborated, along with the utilization of psychometric testing scales to discern students’ interests. Ms. Bakhale also equipped mentors with strategies to systematically address students’ concerns.

Towards the end of the session, Ms. Bakhale addressed the queries of the mentors and engaged in discussions on various issues like motivating students to improve ISA scores, attend remedial classes for the mentees, etc. The mentors gave positive feedback about the orientation. Asst. Prof. Sushrusha Naik Khandekar proposed the Vote of Thanks. A total of 17 faculty members attended the orientation.

Session on ‘Cracking CA Exams’

The Department of Commerce and Management and the Training, Internship and Placement Cell of the College in association with the Goa Branch of WIRC of ICAI & WICASA Goa organized a Session on cracking CA Exams on 25th August 2023. The Resource Person for the session was CA Prasheel Kamat. 59 students attended the session.

The session commenced with a warm welcome from the Vice Principal Dr. Edwin Barreto. Following this, Ms. Brionna Noronha, TY B.Com A, introduced CA Vinayak Dhumatkar, Secretary of the Goa Branch of WIRC of ICAI.CA Dhumatkar addressed the audience and motivated the students about pursuing the CA course.

The Resource Person, CA Prasheel Kamat, then took the stage, providing an insightful overview of IPCC and CA exams. He emphasized key strategies for preparing and excelling in the CA exams, including creating effective study schedules, maintaining progress records, using summaries and note-taking, employing memory aids like acronyms, practicing repeated revisions, nurturing consistency, and fostering a positive mindset.

The session ended with the Vote of Thanks by Mr. Ainsley Bernard, Convenor, TIP Cell. The inputs for the report are provided by Mr. Rahul Raikar, FY B.Com B. The faculty in charge of the session was Asst. Prof. Sheryl Sanches.

Session on Role of GSIC in New Venture Creation in Goa

The Department of Commerce & Management in association with the Training, Internship and Placement Cell of the College organized a Session on Role of GSIC in New Venture Creation in Goa for the students of SY B.Com on 24th August 2023 at 11.15 am in Room No. 206. The Resource Person for the session was Mr. Sudip Faldesai, Project Officer, Goa State Innovation Council. The session was organized as a Guest Lecture for the students of New Venture Planning of SY B.Com. 67 students attended the session. .

The session began with the introduction of the Resource Person by Ms. Giselle Colaco of SY B.Com A. Mr. Faldesai posed a problem statement to the students and asked them to come up with a design for a product to solve the problem. The students enthusiastically participated and drew designs. Few students then presented their designs and discussed about its uses and pricing. He then explained the various stages of developing a product i.e. empathize, define, ideate, prototype and test. He discussed each stage with relevant examples. The Zing Cricket Wicket case study was discussed to explain need and innovation. Mr. Faldesai then explained about the facility at GSIC in Fatorda and also informed the students about the benefits of registering at the Virtual Innovation Register.

Session on “Demystifying Mutual Funds: An Introduction to Investment Opportunities”

The Department of Commerce & Management organized an Interactive session on “Demystifying Mutual Funds: An Introduction to Investment Opportunities” for TY B.Com students on 23rd August 2023. The main objective of this session was to provide participants with a clear and easier understanding on how mutual funds work and how it can be one of the best investment options for them. A total of 74 students attended the session.  The Resource Person for this session was CA Vaibhav Pai Fondekar, an alumnus of the College.

CA Vaibhav provided an in-depth explanation of mutual funds, encompassing their functioning and the array of types that cater to individuals’ needs while considering risk factors. He illustrated the concept of SIP (Systematic Investment Plan) with examples, simplifying comprehension for participants. He highlighted the significance of diverse income streams and effective money management, by underscoring the challenges faced by individuals during the Covid pandemic. He also offered valuable investor tips, including goal-setting, crafting diversified portfolios, and researching fund performance, all of which will greatly aid students in the future.

At the end of the session, the Vote of Thanks was delivered by Ms. Placy Matos, student of TY B.Com. Mr. Kewal Patel, student of TY B.Com hosted the event and Mr. Cyrus, student of TY B.Com introduced the Resource Person.

International Youth Day

The NSS Unit & Red Ribbon Club of the College organized Story Enacting & Reel Making Competition on 23rd August 2023 to commemorate International Youth Day. The theme for the competition was youth/ HIV/ Environment.

45 students of B.Com, BCA and B.Voc(ST) participated in both the Competitions. They enacted stories based on themes. The students showcased their talents & performed their characters through their remarkable gestures, actions and dialogues. Both the competitions inspired the students to think, work & act creatively and made the event most enjoyable for one and all.

The judges for the Story Enacting Competition were Asst. Prof. Sheryl Sanches and Asst. Prof. Snigdha Naik. The judges for the Reel Making Competition were Dr. Maithili Naik and Asst. Prof. Pooja Shanbhag.

Session on Higher Education Abroad

The Training, Internship and Placement Cell of the College in association with My Canada Visas, organized a session on Higher Education Abroad for the students of B.Com & BBA/BBA(FS) on 23rd August 2023. The Resource Person for the session was Mr. Syed Askari, President, My Canada Visas. 83 students attended the session.

Mr. Askari introduced his firm, established in 2013. He has helped several aspirants to migrate to Canada and Poland. He explained how the firm assists aspirants in all aspects to obtain a student visa and migrate to Canada. He discussed about the cost of education in Canada being lower than USA and many other countries. Thus, Canada is one of the most sought after destinations for students in India. He discussed about the consultants of his firm being updated with the latest laws and regulation process.

Interested students discussed their queries with Mr. Askari. The session ended with a Vote of Thanks proposed by Ms. Mourisca Silveira, SY B.Com D. The faculty in charge of the session was Asst. Prof. Sheryl Sanches.

Workshop on Kitchen Gardening

The Green club (Vasundhara) of the College organized a Workshop on Kitchen gardening on 22nd August 2023. The primary aim of this workshop was to raise awareness among students about the significance of cultivating our own food organically and to provide a platform for them to grasp the fundamentals of Kitchen Gardening.

The Resource Person for the workshop was Ms. Liza Pinheiro, an Agriculture Consultant and Promoter of Organic Agriculture in Goa. She highlighted the importance of Kitchen gardening, particularly in urban city life where maintaining a vegetable garden within an apartment can be challenging. Ms. Pinheiro emphasized that the concept of kitchen gardens is gaining traction in India, especially among apartment dwellers who aspire to grow their own vegetables. Consequently, the trend of cultivating vegetables in pots is on the rise. In line with this, participants were taught how to grow vegetables in pots. The students brought pots and soil, and a hands-on training session was conducted. Ms. Pinheiro also provided insights into preparing a mixture of soil, cocopeat, and compost, filling pots, and proper watering techniques.

The workshop included both theoretical and practical sessions. The theoretical session took place in the Smart Classroom, while the practical session was held in the open space near the Canteen. 35 students enthusiastically took part in the workshop, actively engaging in the learning experience.
