Guide to Use Pearson Digital Library

The Department of Library and Information Science, in collaboration with the Research & Development Cell and Faculty Development Cell, organized a Library Awareness Session on Pearson Digital Library. This session was held on 14th September 2023 and was attended by newly joined teaching staff and FY students from all programs. The Resource Person for the session was Mr. Priyank Vyas from Pearson Digital Library, Pune.

During the awareness session, students and faculty members were provided with guidance on how to effectively use and access the Pearson Digital Library. The session included a detailed explanation of the various features and functionalities of the Digital Library. This knowledge-sharing session is expected to greatly benefit students in their assignments and assist teachers in their research work.

76 students and 17 faculty members attended the session.

SSC/N9002 Teamwork and Communication

The Department of Computer Science organized a Training session on Teamwork and communication for FY B.Voc.(ST) students as a part of the skill component of JSD Module Qualification Pack. The Resource Person for the session was Mr. Sameer Kapadi.

The session commenced at 8.15 am. The entire session was divided into three parts: working efficiently in teams, communicating effectively with colleagues and mastering professional soft skills. While explaining about working efficiently in teams, Mr. Kapadi conducted a small activity to enlighten students about teamwork efforts. During this activity, he divided the students into two teams with at least one girl in each team. Each team had to design a gown using newspapers and the team which could design the best gown was the winner. This activity clarified about the outcome gained through collaborative work.

The second part of the session commenced after the break. Mr. Kapadi emphasized on the impact of effective communication on workplace relationships. He also explained about different communication styles. Apart from verbal communication, he also enlightened the students about the etiquette to be followed in digital communication.

In the third section, Mr. Kapadi explained about significance of communication skills, adaptability and resilience. He also educated students about problem solving and critical thinking. He instructed on how to overcome emotional barriers and how to inculcate emotional intelligence within them.

The session was very insightful. Ms. Sneha Prabhudessai, NOS Coordinator, Dept. of Computer Science was the in-charge of the session.

Field Trip to Doordarshan HQ

The Department of Computer Science organized a field trip for the students to Doordarshan Kendra, Altinho Panaji on 13th September 2023. 26 students from BCA and B.Voc.(ST) along with  3 faculty members participated in the field trip. The field trip began with a warm welcome from Mr. Uday Kamat, Programme Executive at Doordarshan Kendra. Mr. Kamat initiated the visit by providing the students with essential guidelines, as live broadcasts were scheduled for the evening.

In the first segment of the tour, Mr. Kamat introduced the students to the main control room, where they witnessed the intricate management of different cameras and broadcast channels. He explained the various software and hardware components used to ensure seamless operations. Subsequently, Mr. Kamat guided the group to the sound and editing room, where they learned about audio and video editing processes. The students were then shown the broadcasting tower, home to several satellite dishes. Continuing the tour, the students were taken to the primary recording room, where they observed how news anchors read news bulletins from teleprompters. Mr. Kamat detailed the hardware and procedures involved in live broadcasting. The culmination of the visit was the students’ participation as the live audience during the 4 pm broadcast. This hands-on experience provided valuable insights into the world of live television production.

The field trip came to an end with the conclusion of the live broadcast, and the students left with a newfound appreciation for the role of Information Technology in the public broadcasting industry. Mrs. Rama Borkar made the arrangements for the field trip.

MENU Camp- Ocean Sailing Expedition

The 5 Kar Naval Unit NCC organized the MENU Camp – Ocean Sailing Expedition in Udupi from September 8th to 22nd, 2023. The primary aim of this camp was to provide cadets with firsthand experience in sailing and foster a deeper understanding and appreciation for this sport.

The camp commenced with a swimming test, where cadets were required to swim 50 meters and float for 3 minutes. Following this, cadets attended classes on sailing, where they learned about boat safety, different types of sailboats, and the terminology used in sailing. They also gained practical knowledge on hoisting, adjusting sails, rigging, and unrigging sails. Cadets were divided into groups to practice rigging and unrigging sails, allowing them to understand the process and learn various knots used in tying sails.

Sailing activities took place at Udyavara Boat pool, Udupi, where cadets were further divided into three groups. These groups included both swimmers and non-swimmers, ensuring that every cadet had the opportunity to experience sailing, regardless of their swimming abilities.

The camp also incorporated social service activities, such as visiting an orphanage and conducting street plays on anti-drug and cybercrime awareness. As part of physical training, cadets embarked on a trek to Kodachadri Hills in Kollur, covering a distance of 8 km. Additionally, qualified swimmers had the opportunity to sail around Malpe port, including a visit to St. Mary’s Island.

The camp concluded with a campfire, followed by cultural nights and an awards ceremony to recognize the achievements of the cadets. PO cadet Shagufata Manjalapur represented our college with 12 other cadets from Goa.

Celebrating the Successful landing of Chandrayan-III on the Moon

The Institution’s Innovation Council (IIC) celebrated the successful landing of Chandrayan-III on the Moon on September 11, 2023 by conducting 4 activities – Poster Making, Bookmark Making, Quiz and Essay Writing.

The objective of this activity was to foster a culture of celebrating significant achievements of our country and to motivate/encourage the student community to aim to achieve high milestones in future.

This activity attracted enthusiastic participation from the students. 64 students participated in this activity.

Golden Jubilee Valedictory Function

Vidya Vikas Mandal’s Shree Damodar College of Commerce & Economics has concluded its Golden Jubilee Year celebrations for 2022-23. To mark the end of the celebration, the College held a grand Valedictory function on 9th September 2023 at 11:00 am in Hall No. 2, Central Block.

The Valedictory function was a poignant reflection of the College’s enduring commitment to education, growth, and community. It was a blend of nostalgia and pride as the institution looked back on its rich heritage and forward to an even more promising future.

The occasion was graced by the presence of esteemed Management members of Vidya Vikas Mandal, including President Shri. Nitin Kunkolienker, immediate Past President,C.A. Smt. Sheela Gaunekar, Hon. Secretary Shri Madhukar Mallya, and Hon. Treasurer C.A. U. N. Bene. The function was also attended by former Principals Shri Gopal Krishna Kondli and Dr. I. Bhanu Murthy, past teachers, and proud alumni of the College.

The event commenced with a soulful Invocation song performed by the College students. In a heartwarming gesture to express gratitude to Lord Damodar, under whose benevolence the College stands tall, the dignitaries adorned the deity’s portrait with a garland.

An artistic video, chronicling the 50-year journey of Shree Damodar College, created by BCA student Mr. Ayush Kale, was released on the occasion by C.A Uttam N. Bene. This captivating video journeyed through the College’s history, from its inception to the present day. It featured a timeline of all the past Presidents who have contributed to the College’s success, offered glimpses of the remarkable Golden Jubilee Year 2022-2023, and conveyed heartfelt best wishes from former Principals of the Institution and the President of Vidya Vikas Mandal. The conclusion of the video was met with resounding applause, acknowledging Mr. Ayush Kale’s, remarkable efforts in creating this memorable tribute.

Principal Prof. Prita D. Mallya then escorted the President and other dignitaries to the dais, where they addressed the gathering. President Shri. Nitin Kunkolienker extended a warm welcome to the Principals, members of the Management, dignitaries, and all the attendees. He expressed his deep appreciation for the dedication and hard work of the College’s management and staff throughout the years. He shared his journey of growth as a Commerce graduate and emphasized the limitless opportunities available to students who have chosen the field of Commerce. He later stressed the need for integration and convergence in education, particularly among the domains of Commerce, IT, and business administration. He outlined the Board of Management’s objectives to elevate Shree Damodar College to one of the country’s premier Institutions and highlighted initiatives like the IT in Academics group. He encouraged students to aspire to become ‘Commerce Scientists’ and affirmed his unwavering commitment to the Institution’s advancement.

Dr. Lina Sadekar, the Convenor of the Golden Jubilee celebrations, presented a comprehensive report, highlighting a year that was filled with diverse celebrations, including Seminars, Conferences, Book donations, festivals, Outreach, and Community services. She expressed heartfelt gratitude to everyone involved.

Immediate Past President CA. Sheela H.N. Gaunekar and Hon. Treasurer CA. U. N. Bene shared their thoughts on the College’s remarkable journey, with Mr. Bene acknowledging the founding members and expressing hope for a bright future under the current dynamic leadership.

Former Principal Shri. Gopal krishna Kondli and Dr. I. Bhanu Murthy shared their experiences and perspectives, with Mr. Kondli emphasizing the importance of merit-based education and Dr. Bhanu Murthy recalling the initiation of the M.Com programme and research during his tenure. Prof. Maria Ester Abranches, a former Mathematics Professor, shared her emotional four-decade journey at the College and expressed her gratitude.

All the stakeholders present took a Pledge of Commitment, administered by the President of Vidya Vikas Mandal. The VicePrincipal, Mr. Edwin Barreto spoke proudly of the College’s growth. He discussed opportunities for collaboration, entrepreneurship, and skill development, emphasizing excellence and plans for the future. Faculty member, Ms. Swati Bhat spoke about the vision for the College over the next few decades.

Alumni including Dr. Shakuntala Bharne, Mr. Suhas Mallya, Ms. Mruga Naik, Mr. Menon Fernandes, Ms. Avita Noronha and Mr. Rajdeep Dessai and Ms. Brionna Noronha, a TY student expressed their congratulations and gratitude for their education at the College, acknowledging the significant role played by their Professors in shaping their lives.

In recognition of their contributions, mementos were presented to all dignitaries, former Principals, teachers, and non-teaching staff. Mr. Ayush Kale, a BCA student received a well-deserved letter of appreciation. Hon Secretary, Shri. Madhukar Mallya proposed the Vote of Thanks, expressing the thought that this Valedictory function serves as the inauguration for the College’s 100th-year celebration. The program concluded with the National Anthem followed by a joyful photo session. Dr. Lira Menezes Gama and Dr. Rodney D’Silva expertly compered the session.

The Valedictory Function marked the culmination of a year-long celebration, showcasing the College’s rich history and the bright future that lies ahead.

Puneet Sagar Abhiyan

The NCC Naval Wing in association with the Literary Club of Cultural Council organized a series of activities to commemorate the “Puneet Sagar Abhiyan with special reference to G-20-Marine Pollution”, (a nationwide flagship campaign) from 6th-8th September 2023. A series of events comprising an Essay competition, Debate competition, and a Poster competition were organized. The objective of the series of events was to raise awareness among the students and general public with regard to the use of plastic thereby reducing plastic pollution, especially marine water pollution.

Day One: 6th September 2023

A Poster competition was organized on the theme “Marine Pollution with special reference to the G-20 Summit”. 17 posters were received. The First place was bagged by Ms. Aminia Fernandes and Ms. Swency Fernandes (FY B.Com A), the Second place was received by Ms. Laxmi Rathod (FY B.Com D), and the third place was bagged by Ms. Vasvi Dhuri and Ms. Prachi Naik (FY B.Com A). The competition was judged by Ms. Marjina Shaikh and Ms. Pooja Shanbhag Assistant Professors in Commerce, and Ms. Lizette D’Costa, Assistant Professor in Economics.

Day two: 7thSeptember 2023

An Essay Competition was held on the topic “Impact of Marine Pollution on Human Beings”. 09 students participated in this competition. First place was won by Jesly Leitao from FY B.Com B and Mr Mehzad Shaikh from TY B.Com A,Second place was secured by Ms. Taniya Silveira  from FY B.Com-A and third place was claimed by Ms. Veverly Pereira from FY B.Com-E and Mr. H Tribhuvan of FY BBA(FS)-A. The judges were Dr. Rodney D’Silva and Dr. Shami Pai, Associate Professors in Commerce.

Day three: 8thSeptember 2023

A Debate was held on the topic “Should companies be held responsible for Marine Pollution?”. First place was won by the team comprising Ms. Nimra Shaikh, Mr. Vishal Ajarekar and Ms. Marisa Fernandes of FY B.Com-D and Ms. Keneisha Pereira of FY B.Com-E. Second place was secured by the team comprising Mr. Rahul Raikar and Ms. Monisha D’Costa from FY B.Com-B and Ms. Shreeya Naik and Ms. Clancy Fernandes of FY B.Com-C. Third place was won by Ms. Valeny Fernades, Mr. Anurag Chari, Mr. M. D. Fahadullah Javed and Mr. Granthik Buyao of FY B.Com A. The judges were Mr. Shreyas Dessai, Assistant Professor in Economics and Ms. Anisha Sawant, Assistant Professor in Commerce.

All the events were coordinated by Sub. Lt Pretty Pereira, ANO of Naval Wing, and Dr. Monica M. Patil, Faculty In charge, Literary Club.

Digital Poster Design Competition: “Fusion of Finance and Technology”

The Commerce Club of the Department of Commerce and Management successfully organized a Digital Poster Design Competition on the theme “Fusion of Finance and Technology” from 1st to 9th September 2023. The event aimed to encourage students to creatively explore the intersection of finance and technology through visual representation.

13 students participated in the competition, showcasing their artistic talents and innovative interpretations of the theme. After careful evaluation, the following students were recognized as the winners of the Digital Poster Design Competition:

Visual Brilliance: A Deep Dive into Canva, Google Slides, Forms, and AI

The Department of Computer Science organized a session on “Visual Brilliance: A Deep Dive into Canva, Google Slides, Forms, and AI” on 2nd & 8th September 2023, from 12:30 to 2:30 pm for the nominated student members of all the committees/ Clubs of the College.

On 2nd September 2023, Mr. Ramkrishna Reddy was the Resource Person. He discussed various tools such as Canva, Bluewillow AI, ChatGPT, Firefly, and Microsoft Designer, as well as remove.bg. 18 students attended the session.

On 8th September 2023, Ms. Pradnya Nadkarni was the Resource Person. She discussed how to create Google Slides and Google Forms, and demonstrated the use of Autocrat and Certify’em add-ons for certificate generation. 08 students attended the session.

The session was conducted to motivate and educate students on the use of these powerful digital tools and to enhance their skills in visual content creation and productivity.Ms. Rakshavi Dessai was the teacher incharge of the session.

SkillStir: 30-Hour Certificate Course

The Department of Economics & Banking in collaboration with the FY Certificate Course Committee organized a 30-hour Certificate Course ‘SkillStir’ for the First Year students of the College. The course commenced on 29th August 2023 and concluded on 15th September 2023. The course comprised five types of artistic and culinary skills imparted to the students, viz., crochet-making/knitting, thermocol decoration, decoupage, flower-making, cooking, and baking essentials. Experts in each of the skills were invited to teach and deliver sessions and share their expertise with the students.

Crochet-making/Knitting – 29th August to 02nd September 2023:

The Resource Person for the crochet-making/knitting skill was Ms. Linette Gomes, a young entrepreneur who owns a start-up called ‘Crochet to Cuddles’. She is an expert in the area of crochet and knitting. Ms. Gomes enriched the students with techniques on various kinds of stitches which can be used to knit different patterns, forming table pieces, bedspreads, outfits, stuffed toys, etc. Students were given daily tasks to be done at home and brought the next day which was assessed by Ms. Gomes.

Thermocol Decoration – 29th August to 02nd September 2023:

The art of thermocol decoration was skillfully and meticulously taught by Mrs. Maria Lourdes Barreto. Students were taught the basic, essential skills of holding, cutting, carving, and smoothening of thermocol, necessary for the best outcome of the decor. Mrs. Barreto assigned the students a task based on the skills imparted during the sessions.

Cooking and Baking essentials – 04th, 6th to 09th September 2023:

Mrs. Maria Lourdes Barreto was the Resource Person for the skill in cooking and baking essentials. Mrs. Barreto has a degree in Home Science, with an extremely deep passion for cooking and baking. During her sessions, she imparted skills in the preparation of various dishes and baked items. Her sessions were extremely engaging as they aroused the culinary and gastronomical skills and senses of all students present. Mrs. Barreto provided students with Google links on a daily basis, as a task to be completed, based on which each student was assessed.

Decoupage – 11h to 12th September 2023:

Mrs. Jemina D’Costa, a veteran in the field of decoupage beautifully imparted her skill of decoupage – the art of decorating any object, usually bottles, plates, boxes, etc., by embossing decorative decoupage tissues in combination with special paint effects and decorative elements. She also shared her knowledge of marketing and profits earned on such items.

Flower-making – 13h to 15th September 2023:

Mrs. Annet Gomes, the Resource Person for the skill of flower-making, creatively delivered her sessions by teaching the students several types of flowers with different materials like crepe, stockings, ribbon, etc. Students were given daily tasks to be completed and submitted to the Resource Person the following day. Students imbibed the skill of flower-making which is a lucrative avenue for business in today’s times

The 30-hour skill-intensive course ‘SkillStir’ culminated on the 15th of September 2023 with participating students receiving concentrated skills with hands-on knowledge of the skills imparted.  49 students successfully completed the course.
