Academic Leadership Program

The Directorate of Higher Education (DHE) and Goa State Higher Education Council (GSHEC) in association with Infosys Springboard, Mysore Development Centre, organized a 4-Day Academic Leadership Program from 21st to 24th November 2023.

The sessions were diverse and included team-building activities, a tour of Infosys Campus, hands-on training on Infosys Springboard, a Design Thinking workshop, and discussions on effective teaching techniques. The final day focused on assessing Design Thinking, exploring emerging digital technologies, instructional design, content development strategies, and leveraging Infosys Springboard for enhanced engagement.

26 senior faculty members from reputed institutions in Goa attended this program. It fostered a collaborative and enriching environment for academic leadership development.

Swacch Diwali, Shubh Diwali Campaign

The NSS unit of the College under Swacch Diwali, Shubh Diwali Campaign took initiative to promote a clean, green, and single-use plastic-free Diwali celebration from 9th to 11th November 2023. The campaign involved various activities carried out by students, focusing on creating awareness and motivating people to make environmentally conscious choices during the festive season.

The activities were as follows:

Cleanliness Drive: Students enthusiastically took part in a cleanliness drive within their neighborhood, focusing on cleaning public places and streets to ensure a hygienic environment for everyone.

Awareness Programs: The students organized awareness programs, educating their community about the environmental impact of Diwali celebrations. Emphasis was placed on the importance of reducing waste and adopting sustainable practices. The students actively advocated for a single-use plastic-free Diwali, utilizing social media platforms to spread awareness about the harmful effects of plastic pollution and suggesting alternatives for sustainable celebrations.

Promoting Responsible Consumption: Engaging with local businesses and vendors, the students encouraged them to provide eco-friendly products. Additionally, they motivated people to opt for locally-made items such as diyas, cloth bags, and compostable decorations.

13 NSS volunteers actively participated in the campaign. The Swachh Diwali, Shubh Diwali Campaign proved to be a successful initiative, instilling a sense of responsibility and environmental consciousness among students and the community.

Students attended National Games

The 37th National Games were officially inaugurated on October 26th, 2023, at the Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Fatorda, South Goa. The ceremony was inaugurated by Prime Minister Shri. Narendra Modi, in the presence of Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports – Shri. Anurag Singh Thakur, Chief Minister of Goa – Shri. Pramod Sawant, Goa Sports Minister Shri. Govind Gaude, and Minister of State for Tourism Shri. Shripad Naik. The event unfolded across five Goan cities: Mapusa, Margao, Panjim, Ponda, and Vasco, encompassing 28 venues.

The National Games featured a diverse range of sports disciplines, including Beach Football, Roll Ball, Golf, Sepak Takraw, Sqa yMartial Arts, Kalliya Rapattu, and Pencak Silat. Athletes from various states across India participated, showcasing their skills and competing in these disciplines.

The NSS students from our college attended the National Games as spectators, specifically for the football matches at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Fatorda. Throughout the event, an average of 70 students attended as spectators daily, from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm, enjoying the spirited competition.

37th National Games, 2023

37th National Games, 2023, were held in Goa from 25th October till 01st November 2023. 95 students participated as volunteers. Dr. Edwin B. Barreto, Mr. Saurabh P. Raikar, Mr. Dewaraj Hirekurbar, Ms. Eshani Bakhle, Mr. Rahul Naik, Mr. Manu Shelko and Mr. Bharat Sawant monitored and accompanied the student volunteers to the venue. The student volunteers were deployed for Beach football at Colva.

Student volunteers and staff attended briefing and orientation from 25th to 27th October 2023. During this period student volunteers received kits. The beach football match began from 28th October 2023. The staff performed their duties of accompanying students in Balrath buses from pick up points, taking attendance and supervising students. Beach football match would begin at 8.00 am and last match would be at 4.00pm. College staff monitored the students and ensured discipline of students during beach football. The final match was on 1st November 2023. Students performed their duties well. The staff ensured the safety of students during semi-finals and finals.

Student performed following duties as volunteers for beach football: Accreditation, managing media, conducting beach football match, performing match operations, managing venue, maintain hygiene and cleanliness at venue, assisting guests and spectators.

On 31st October 2023, “Prasar Bharti sports” filmed a video with our college students and staff to cheer team India for Cricket World Cup 2023, which was aired on YouTube platform on 2nd November 2023.

The student volunteers and deputed staff attended the closing ceremony of National Games, 2023 on 9th November 2023, which took place at Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Stadium, Bambolim. The event began at 2.30pm with performances by artistes like Sonia Shirsat, Swaroop Khan and Mukesh Ghatwal. The closing ceremony took place in the presence of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Indian Olympic Association President P T Usha, Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant and others. The ceremony ended at 6 pmwith handing over the torch for National Games to Uttarakhand for 38th National Games.

37th National Games 2023

The Directorate of Higher Education deputed 04 faculty members from our Institution for the 37th National Games 2023 in Goa with a view to ensure effective coordination and execution of all the activities related to the Medal Presentation Ceremony.

Dr. Rodney D’Silva, Mr. Ainsley Bernard and Ms. Sheryl Sanches were deputed at the Pandit Jawaharlal Stadium, Fatorda for Lawn Tennis from 26th October to 5th November 2023. Dr. Sheetal Arondekar was deputed at Tilak Maidan, Vasco for Women’s Football from 26th October to 5th November 2023. The teachers were incharge of the Medal Presentation Ceremony.

All India NauSainik Camp

The Maharashtra Directorate NCC organized the All India NauSainik Camp (AINSC) at INS Shivaji, Lonavala from 14th to 25th October 2023. The primary aim of the camp was to provide cadets with firsthand information about naval life.

612 cadets, including 408 Senior Division (SD) boy Cadets and 204 Senior Wing Girl (SW) Cadets, participated from 17 NCC directorates across the country. The competitions included boat pulling, ship modeling, drill, whaler-boat rigging, semaphore, service subjects, seamanship practicals, and small arms firing.  PO Cadet Shudeepa Oli and Leading Cadet Melissa Solomon represented 1 Goa Naval Unit NCC and our Institution. They were the only girls selected for the camp, along with four SD cadets from Goa.

In addition to various competitions and cultural programs, the Cadets had the unique opportunity to visit the state-of-the-art marine engineering training facilities at INS Shivaji, a premier technical training institute of the Indian Navy. To qualify for AINSC, Cadets had to go through different phases of NauSainik Camps in their group and directorate. The camp began with a swimming test where Cadets had to swim 50 meters and float for 3 minutes. The boat pulling competition took place at the lake in INS Shivaji. LC Melissa Solomon was the coxswain, and the Women’steam of Karnataka and Goa won the silver medal.

In the Women’s category, teams from Directorates of Delhi, Karnataka-Goa, and Uttarakhand won the gold, silver, and bronze medals, respectively. In the Men’s category, Maharashtra, Delhi, and Karnataka-Goa teams won the gold, silver, and bronze, respectively. The Karnataka-Goa team was declared the overall winner. Medals and other prizes were presented by DG of NCC Lt. General Gurbirpal Singh. Leading Cadet Melissa Solomon of Shree Damodar College Naval Unitreceived DDG recommendation for the Best Cadet in the upcoming RDC phase.

Annual Study Tour to Gujarat

The Students’ Council of the College organized its Annual Study Tour for the students of the College from the 22nd to 27th October 2023. The destination of the tour was Gujarat, India. 33 students participated in the tour and were escorted by three staff members, Dr. Lira Menezes Gama, Mr. Sandesh Gaonkar, and Ms. Lizette D’Costa, along with a tour guide from the collaborating agent Travel Bug.

Day 1 of the journey began from Margao Railway Station on the 22nd October at 08:30 a.m. when the group left for Dadar by 10104 Mandovi Express and arrived at Dadar station at 09:00 p.m. The onward train 14808 Bhagat Ki Kothi SF Express departed Dadar at 12:05 a.m. and arrived at Ahmedabad junction at 08:45 a.m. on 23rd October 2023. The tour group was then transported by bus and checked in at Hotel Pragati- The Grand, Ahmedabad, Gujarat. After a quick freshen-up, the group proceeded to Anand, Gujarat, to visit the Amul Dairy plant and the Amul Chocolate plant. The visits to both places were highly informative with persons in charge providing detailed information on the production and processing of various products at each of the plants. The students were extremely enriched by this visit. Many products were also available for sale at the plant. The group returned to the hotel by 07:00 p.m. and was given time at leisure to explore the local area.

On Day 3 of the tour, after breakfast at the hotel, the tour group proceeded by bus to Modhera to explore the exquisite architecture of the Sun Temple. The temple was enriched with intense carvings depicting various legends of the past. The next visit was to Rani ki Vav at Patan, Gujarat. Another historic monument constructed by Rani Udayamati in memory of her late husband Raja Bhima. The unique, captivating site, surrounded by greenery, and featuring an intriguing well was a sight to behold. The new one hundred Indian rupee note depicts this monumental historic Rani Ki Vav on the reverse. Thereafter, the group headed for lunch at a local restaurant and then proceeded back to the hotel. The evening was free to explore the local Ahmedabad market where students did a lot of shopping and relished local cuisine.

Day 4 began with a good breakfast at the hotel and checking out, en route to Vadodara. The first visit was at the Hutheesing Jain Mandir, Ahmedabad. The beautiful temple embodies a blend of the old and new temple architecture elements in its designs and bequests an extremely calm and serene experience. The next destination was Sabarmati Ashram, Ahmedabad, home to Mahatma Gandhi, and one of the main centres of India’s freedom struggle. The ashram possesses a museum displaying various articles, paintings, spinning charkha, etc. The group next visited Vikram Sarabhai Space Exhibition Centre, ISRO Science City, Ahmedabad. The centre focuses on rocket and space vehicles for India’s satellite programme.  The last visit for the day was scheduled to the Swaminarayan Akshardham Temple, Gandhinagar. The beautiful temple depicting the life of Swaminarayan through many artifacts also contained a picturesque park in its premise. After an enriching and eventful day, the group headed for lunch and then proceeded on a two-hour journey by bus to Vadodara. Upon reaching Vadodara, the group checked in at the President Hotel, Vadodara for the night. Here too the group indulged in some street shopping after some sumptuous dinner at the hotel.

On Day 5 of the tour, the 26th October, after breakfast at the hotel, the group checked out and proceeded to visit Nilkanthdham, Swaminarayan temple, Poicha. This extensive religious complex with fountains, water ponds, statues of Gods and Goddesses, and numerous carved artifacts was a spectacular sight to behold. The premises also had a food court and many souvenir shops. After lunch, the group proceeded to the world’s tallest statue, India’s pride, the Statue of Unity. There were special buses to take the group to this point. The students savoured the breathtaking view of the huge Statue which was followed by a captivating laser show. At this point, the group also got a scenic view of the Sardar Sarovar Dam built on the Narmada River. Thereafter, the group proceeded for dinner and subsequently, to the adjacent Ekta Nagar railway station to board the train scheduled to depart Ekta Nagar, Gujarat, at 09:25 p.m. by 12928 Ekta Nagar Dadar Western Sf Express. The group arrived in Dadar at 05:30 a.m. on 27th October, day 7, and had a two-hour halt for its onward journey from Dadar to Madgaon on 10103, Mandovi Express.

The tour group reached Margao Railway station on 27th October 2023 at 09.30 p.m. The annual study tour was an extremely educative and enriching one, providing each student a great experience with priceless memories. The students appreciated and thanked the teachers and organizers for the wonderful experience.

Study Tour to Hyderabad

The Department of Management Studies organized a study tour to Hyderabad from 20th to 24th October 2023. The journey to Hyderabad commenced on October 20th, 2023, with a train ride from Margao. After an exhilarating 20-hour train journey, the group arrived at their destination, Kachegud, Hyderabad.

During the tour, the group visited following local sightseeing places

Golconda Fort: A historic citadel originally known as Mankal, it was built on a hilltop in 1143. Climbing over 300 steps in the hot weather provided a memorable experience.
NTR Garden: The picturesque garden offered opportunities for photos and making memories, despite the humid Hyderabad weather.
Lumbini Park: The day concluded with a mesmerizing laser show at Lumbini Park.
Ramoji Film City. This destination provided an inside look into the world of film and adventure, with live performances and a behind-the-scenes view of filmmaking.
Charminar: This iconic monument stands in the heart of a bustling market area. Climbing to the top provided a panoramic view of the city.
The Chowmahalla Palace: The palace’s architectural grandeur left a lasting impression, featuring lush gardens and splendid fountains. Its name, “Chowmahalla,” translates to “Four Palaces.”

The group also visited Indian School of Business (ISB) where an interactive session with Mr. Kaushik Rai  provided insights into the institution’s transformative impact on students’ lives and its course structure.

The tour to Hyderabad was a resounding success, providing students with enriching experiences, cultural insights, and unforgettable moments. 20 BBA/BBA(FS) students along with 2 faculty members Mr. Omkar Pawaskar and Ms. Snigdha Naik were a part of this tour.

Photography Contest

In global observance of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, the Department of Economics & Banking organized a Photography Contest from 17th to 21st October 2023. The observance of this day aimed to promote understanding and dialogue between people living in poverty and the wider society. Ending poverty is not just helping the poor, it is giving every human a chance to live with dignity. The objective of the contest was to sensitize students, raise awareness of the meaning of living with dignity, and serve as a reminder that poverty is not only a global challenge but also a barrier to achieving social justice and sustainable development. The competition was open to all students of the College. The theme for the competition was ‘Dignity for All in Practice’.13 students participated in the competition. It provided a platform for the students to showcase their photographic skills and meet the objective of the competition. The photographs were judged based on clarity, capture, relevance to the theme, message, and overall presentation.

The first place was bagged by Mr. Zenon Tadeu Vaz of FY B.Com (A), the second place went to Mr. Omkar Naik of SY B.Com (C), the third place was shared by Mr. Kewell Fernandes of TY B.Com (A), and Ms. Sidhi Kerwadikar of TY B.Com (C).

The competition was organized and coordinated by Ms. Lizette D’Costa, Assistant Professor, Department of Economics & Banking.

Session on ‘Careers in Life Insurance Corporation of India’

The Post Graduate Department of Commerce in association with the Training, Internship and Placement Cell organized a session on ‘Careers in Life Insurance Corporation of India’ on 19th October, 2023 in the Smart Classroom. The session was delivered by Mr. Gopi Megeri, Development Officer, LIC of India, Mapusa. The main objective of the session was to give insights on Career opportunities in Life Insurance Corporation of India. Ms. Saloni Harjan of M.Com Part I welcomed the audience to the session. Ms. Anusha Rodrigues of M.Com Part I introduced the Resource Person. Mr. Alrich Fernandes presented a potted plant to the Resource Person.

Mr.Gopi commenced the session with an insightful overview of the Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) in India. He emphasized the prominence of the insurance industry in India, with LIC being a major player, having approximately 24% of the market share. During his presentation, he elaborated on the numerous career opportunities available with LIC and the associated benefits. Mr. Megeri also highlighted the distinguishing features between the services provided by private insurance companies and LIC. He shared notable awards and achievements earned by LIC and introduced some of the well-known celebrity LIC agents in India. Furthermore, Mr. Megeri emphasized the advantages of holding a Club Membership within LIC and introduced the ‘LIC Ananda’ app. He proceeded to outline the process of becoming an LIC Agent, including eligibility criteria, necessary documentation, and the associated examination fees.

To conclude the session, Mr. Megeri engaged the students in a practical activity, demonstrating the LIC app, which provides job updates within LIC, offering valuable insights into potential career opportunities. Ms. Aemisha Azavedo of M.Com Part I proposed the Vote of Thanks.  61 students of M.Com Part I and Part II attended the session.
