The sessions were conducted by the M.Com faculty: Ms. Twinkle Fernandes, Ms. Valencia Baptista and Ms. Edrea Picardo. They briefed the students about the M.Com programme offered at Shree Damodar College of Commerce & Economics. They covered various aspects of the programme such as course objectives, structure, number of seats, specialization available, courses offered, evaluation scheme, internship, dissertation and

teaching methodologies. They also briefed the students about the College facilities, various departmental activities like guest lectures, Industry Interaction Program, Research Paper Presentations, PG Club Activities such as Debate Club, Gurukul, business quiz, study tours and industrial visits. They also mentioned about the various career opportunities available after pursuing the programmes.

Thereafter, the students were briefed about GU-ART i.e. the Goa University Admission Ranking Test, a pre-requirement to obtain admission to Post Graduate programs. The faculty members informed the students about the last date of registration of Round 1 of GU-ART, Question paper pattern, syllabus and marking scheme. They also informed the students about the GU-ART preparatory training organized by the PG Department of Commerce scheduled from 18th to 30th January 2024.

The teachers were accompanied by students of M.Com Part II: Ms. Switi Gawas, Ms. Petalia Coutinho and Ms. Shantani Prabhu who shared their feedback of the M.Com programme as well as positive experiences in terms of academic and co-curricular life at Shree Damodar College with the TY students.

Career Counseling Session on ‘Future of AI and Emerging Job Horizons’

The Career Cell organised an insightful session on the topic ‘Future of AI and Emerging Job Horizons’ on 12th January 2024 from 11.00 am to 12.00 pm in the smart classroom for the students of all the programmes. The objective of the session was to provide students with insights into the dynamic field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its influence on upcoming job prospects and the career opportunities available.

The Principal welcomed the gathering and highlighted the potential automation of routine tasks and the subsequent emergence of new job roles focusing on managing and enhancing AI systems. She further informed that, as AI becomes more prevalent, there will be a growing need for professionals with the necessary knowledge and skills.  Ms. Karishma Tuenkar, Faculty Department of Computer Science introduced the Resource Person Dr. Roopa Praveen, Director-Admissions and International relations, ASM Group of Institutes, to the participants.

Session Overview: Segment 1: Introduction to AI

Dr. Roopa Praveen initiated the session by introducing students to the concept of AI and its current impact on the business landscape. She discussed the potential automation of tasks across various industries and emphasized the creation of new job opportunities. The speaker shed light on the ethical implications of AI, its role in shaping the future of businesses and the strategies for success in the AI-powered business world.

Segment 2: Key Drivers, Importance of AI, Career prospects

The second segment delved into the key drivers of AI adoption, its significance for management aspirants, and its role in data-driven decision-making. Dr. Roopa illustrated these concepts with industry examples, providing students with a comprehensive understanding of the subject. The discussion also touched upon challenges in AI implementation and future trends in the field.

The session concluded at 12:00 pm with a Vote of Thanks by Ms. Pooja Shanbhag, Convenor of Career Cell.  68 students actively participated in the session, engaging with the Resource Person by posing queries and clarifying doubts. Thus, this awareness-cum-counseling session was successful in preparing students for the evolving dynamics of the job market influenced by AI technologies.

Workshop at Purple Fest 2024

International Purple Fest 2024 Goa is India’s First-of-its-kind inclusive festival that celebrates person with disabilities. They organised a workshop Antarchakshu and Inclusive Education on 10th & 11th January 2024. Dr. Shami Pai, Ms. Sushrusha Naik Khandekar, and Ms. Yugandhara Joshi attended the workshop on 10th January Mr. Sanjay Velip and Mrs. Sweta P. Shet Verenkar attended the session on 11th January, and Dr. Lira Menzes Gama, Ms. Sneha Prabhdessai and Ms. Edrea Picardo attended on 12th January.

The workshop began with the brief introduction of the workshop by the Resource Person. The workshop is curated by Xavier’s Resource Centre for the Visually Challenged, St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai. The faculty members of VVM’s Shree Damodar College attended the workshop ‘Antarchakshu’ followed by a session on Inclusive Classroom. Antarchakshu was a session designed for the faculty members of various colleges to provide an immersive experience zone spanning a child’s entire educational journey, from Kindergarten to Postgraduate. This provided them with an opportunity to explore practical solutions to inclusive education challenges, crafted through diligent hard work and innovative thinking. The session included various activities where the faculty members were blindfolded to perform given tasks and creative activities to experience the life of visually challenged. This workshop was followed by a session on inclusive education which was delivered by the College counsellor of St. Xavier’s College. This session focused on making effort in using techniques for inclusive classroom for the students with disabilities and including them in the normal education system.

St. Xavier’s College also emphasized on the realities of how inclusive education can bring about a huge change in the society and there are numerous ways to follow with patience towards making the life of a disabled individual easier by providing the necessary help. An interactive discussion a visually challenged person was also arranged wherein the faculty members attending the workshop were provided with an opportunity to interact and share Mr. Ketan’s experience of topping Mumbai University despite being visually challenged. The workshop ended at 1.30 p.m.

Student Participation in National Integration Camp at Dharwad, Karnataka

The State NSS Cell, Department of Youth Empowerment & Sports and Govt of Karnataka, in collaboration with Regional Directorate of NSS Bangalore organized a National Integration Camp (NIC) at NSS Bhavan, Karnataka University, Dharwad from 05th to 11th January, 2024 with the aim of fostering national unity and harmony by bringing together youngsters from diverse backgrounds and regions of our country. Various States participated in the NIC camp such as Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Karnataka, etc. A team of 10 students and 1 NSS Programme Officer participated from Goa.

Mr. Altaj Khan Pathan, student from TY B.Com represented our college with great enthusiasm and actively engaged in various activities and workshops designed to promote cultural exchange, mutual understanding, and team building. During the camp Mr. Altaj Khan Pathan was involved in various activities starting from Yoga session in the early morning, cultural performances, group discussions, visit to Museum & Science center, community services, and interactive sessions on social issues.

NCC (Navy) Annual Training Camp

1 Goa Naval Unit NCC organized a ten-day Annual Training Camp for JD, JW, SD, SW from 2nd to 11th January 2024 at 1 Goa Naval Unit NCC, Sports Complex, Peddem, Mapusa, Goa. The objectives of the ATC were:

(a) To expose Naval cadets to camp life, outdoor activities, and community living.

(b) To carry out intensive and collective training of cadets in respective service subjects.

(c) To bring cadets together from different social backgrounds and develop a sense of responsibility, self-reliance, and bonhomie.

(d) To develop qualities of comradeship, leadership, character, and discipline.

(e) To inculcate the habit of community living and learn the dignity of labor.

(f) To train cadets with the NCC syllabus with special emphasis on specialized and practical training.

At the outset, the camp commandant, Captain S Ram Kumar, addressed the cadets, outlining the camp’s expectations. Cadets were familiarized with the camp routine order and sensitized to various aspects like fitness, health, and hygiene. Under the guidance of the ANOs, CTOs, and PI staff, the cadets gained knowledge and experience in various areas of naval life, including semaphore, drill, yoga, weapon training, tent pitching, rigging, etc. The cultural program played a significant role in fostering bonds of national integration and nurturing the spirit of patriotism.

 

On January 7, 2024, Group Commander of Belgaum, Colonel Mohan Naik, visited the campsite and felicitated five cadets who completed AINSC. PO Cadet Shudeepa Oli and LC Melissa Solomon were among the five felicitated. The entire program during the group commander’s visit was coordinated by Sub Lt. Pretty Pereira, ANO of the NCC Naval wing of the College. She also made a presentation for the group commander’s visit. Our college cadets were selected to perform a group dance for the group commander’s visit.

During the cultural evening, our cadets showcased a vibrant group dance representing the Karnataka and Goa Directorate. The talent and efforts of our cadets were recognized through several awards and recognitions:

·         First prize in Group Dance.

·         First prize in Poetry Writing (SD).

·         CC Laxita Suthar received a token of appreciation trophy for her outstanding performance.

·         PO Cadet Shudeepa Oli and LC Melissa Solomon were felicitated for completing AINSC.

·         Trophy of Excellence.

The 12 cadets were under the guidance of Sub Lt. Pretty Pereira, ANO of the NCC Naval wing of our institution, who also served as the in charge of the girls’ division. The camp saw participation from 400 cadets representing 26 institutions.

FILM SCREENING AT INTERNATIONAL PURPLE FEST

Students of BCA programme participated in the film screening at the ‘International Purple Fest’ held at INOX Panjim on 9th January 2024.  The ‘International Purple Fest’ is an annual event that aims to raise awareness about the challenges faced by differently-abled individuals while promoting a sense of inclusivity and empowerment. 24 students attended the same.

The fest featured an impressive selection of short films that explored various aspects of revisiting and understanding the lives of people with different abilities. The festival’s organizers curated a diverse and thought-provoking lineup of short films that delved into the experiences, challenges, and triumphs of differently-abled individuals. These films provided valuable insights into the lives of people from different parts of the world, encouraging reflection and fostering a deeper understanding of the issues faced by the differently abled community.

The films were screened from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. After the event, students had the opportunity to interact and meet renowned differently-abled individuals. Ms. Zakiya Tahir, Assistant Professor in English, accompanied the students. This experience proved valuable in fostering inclusivity, empowerment and in cultivating a compassionate and accepting society.

Annual Athletic Meet

The Department of Physical Education and Sports hosted its Annual Athletic Meet on 8th January, 2024. The event commenced at 9 am with the College Director of Physical Education and Sports extending a warm welcome to the Chief Guest Dr. Edwin Barreto and the participants. The Chief Guest, delivered an inspiring speech emphasizing the value of participation over victory, setting a positive tone for the day. The event officially began with the unfurling of the College flag by the Chief Guest, symbolizing the meet to be open.

 

The sports day featured a variety of track and field events, including 100m, 200m, 400m, and 1500m races for men and women, as well as long jump, triple jump, shot put, discus throw, and javelin throw. Team events included the 4x100m relay for men and women, along with a mixed 4x100m relay. Each student was limited to participating in two individual events and two relays.

The results were later announced during the closing ceremony, where the College Director of Sports and Mr. Dewaraj Hirekurabar presented a report on the day’s events.

Prizes were awarded to the deserving winners by Mr. Dewaraj Hirekurabar, and Mr. Saurabh Raikar, Instructor in Physical Education. The ceremony concluded with lowering of the flag by Mr. Dewaraj Hirekurabar, followed by a gracious Vote of Thanks delivered by Saurabh Raikar.

Anaemia Detection Camp

The NSS unit, in collaboration with the Urban Health Centre in Margao, organized an Anaemia Detection Camp T3 (Testing for Anaemia, Treating Anaemia & Talking about Anaemia) on 5th January 2024. The aim was to raise awareness about the causes, symptoms, and preventive measures of anaemia, to encourage community members to adopt a healthy lifestyle and dietary practices and to detect cases of anaemia within the community.

A team of healthcare professionals including Dr. Pratishta Cuncoliencar, AYUSH Medical officer, Ms. Melkiza Furtado, Nutrition Officer, and Sr. Gandhali School Health Nurse. ANM Dipti, Mr. Pradeep Borkar MPHW and Ms. Alisha Alemao RMNCHA Counselor and NSS volunteers, collaborated to ensure the smooth execution of the camp.

Participants underwent a simple haemoglobin screening test to detect anemia. The results were provided on the spot, and individuals identified with low haemoglobin levels were offered counseling and guidance for further medical intervention. Additionally, a unique element was introduced with an Iron-Rich Recipe Competition to promote the consumption of iron-rich foods and also to encourage students to explore creative and nutritious ways to incorporate iron into their diets. Participants submitted recipes that were not only rich in iron but also delicious and easy to prepare. A panel of judges, including nutritionists and doctor, evaluated the entries based on nutritional value and taste.

Website Designing Competition

The students of Software Development group under the TechTrendz Club hosted a website designing competition on 6th January 2024, from 12:30 pm to 1:30 pm, for students of the Department of Computer Science.

The primary goal was to assess their front-end skills by challenging them to create a website within one hour, adhering to the theme “Travel Agency” and utilizing HTML, CSS, and JS technologies. Participants were permitted to access the internet solely for CDN usage and to download necessary images and videos, with a strict prohibition on the use of pre-made templates.

The competition saw the involvement of three teams, each composed of two members. The judge for the competition was Mr. Ramakrishna Reddy, Assistant Professor in Computer Science. Evaluation criteria included user-friendliness, responsiveness, content quality, creativity, and overall design.

The winners of the competition were:

2nd Place: Ms. Aarti Solanki and Ms. Thayaba Banu, FY B.Voc.(ST)

The competition was expertly organized by Mr. Khushal Naik from FY B.Voc.(ST) and his team. Ms. Ankita Naik was the teacher incharge of the competition, while Ms. Annette Santimano serving as the TechTrendz Incharge, ensured the event’s smooth execution.
