Food Bazaar

The Department of Computer Science in association with E-Cell and Incubation Centre, organized a Food Bazaar on 18th and 19th January 2024. This event served as a platform for showcasing entrepreneurial spirit and was part of the Entrepreneurship Development course. Food and game stalls were set up, offering attendees a wide array of savory and sweet delicacies skillfully prepared by the students. The Food Bazaar served as a practical learning ground for event management, teamwork, and entrepreneurship.

On the first day of the Food Bazaar, students from SY BCA-A and TY B.Voc.(ST) set up a total of 11 food stalls and one game stall, adding vibrancy and diversity to the event. They demonstrated their culinary expertise by presenting a wide array of savory and sweet delicacies. Additionally, a game stall provided an interactive and entertaining element for attendees.

On the second day of the Food Bazaar, SY BCA-B set up 7 food stalls and one game stall. Students showcased their culinary prowess once again, presenting an enticing array of savory and sweet delights. These activities helped them apply the knowledge acquired through classroom discussions in a practical setting. Students also acquired skills in preparing item-specific budgets, cost management, and profit generation.

The Food Bazaar received overwhelming response from both participants and attendees. Visitors praised the diverse range of culinary creations and skill exhibited by the students. The game stall continued to be a hit, providing entertainment and a playful atmosphere for participants. Students had also created a promotional video and vibrant menu card. Ms. Vinaya Kirloskar was the overall faculty in charge of the event.

Waste Segregation

The Department of Management Studies and the Green Club (Vasundhara) of the College in association with YIMBY organized a session on “Waste Segregation” on 18th January 2024 at 11:30 am in Hall no.2. The session focused on educating participants about the importance of waste segregation and providing practical insights into implementing effective waste disposal strategies.  71 Students attended the session.

Mr. Gaurav Pokle, Founder & CEO of YIMBY was the Resource Person for the session. He began the session with the significance of waste segregation in contributing to a sustainable and eco-friendly campus environment. An overview of waste segregation principles and its impact on the environment was presented. Participants were briefed on the different categories of waste, including organic, recyclable, and non-recyclable materials. The characteristics of each type were explained to ensure a clear understanding. Best practices were shared to inspire and motivate participants to adopt similar strategies.

An interactive discussion allowed participants to share their thoughts, concerns, and ideas about waste management. This exchange of ideas promoted a sense of community engagement and encouraged collaborative problem-solving. The session concluded with closing remarks expressing gratitude to the participants for their active involvement. Attendees were encouraged to share the knowledge gained with their peers and contribute to creating a culture of sustainability within the College.

The session aimed to instil a sense of responsibility among participants regarding their waste disposal habits.

BOOK EXHIBITION

The Department of Library & Information Science in collaboration with Navkar Book Distributors, Mumbai organized Book Exhibition for all the students and staff members on 18th January, 2024 from 10.00 am to 2.00 pm in the Reading Room.

The Book Exhibition was inaugurated by Dr. Edwin Brahma Barreto, Vice Principal of the College. Books were displayed of various subjects like Economics, Banking, Management, Commerce, Mathematics, Marketing, Literature, Environment, Computer Science etc. More than 200 readers/Visitors visited the book exhibition. Faculty members and students selected a few books for the purchase by the College library.

Library staff Ms. Ravila Talaulikar, Mr. Bappo Varak, Mr. Injo Lambor were also present. The Book Exhibition concluded at 2.00 pm.

NSS Adventure Camp in Dharmashala, Himachal Pradesh

The National Service Scheme (NSS) Adventure Camp held at Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Mountaineering & Allied Sports (ABVIMAS), Dharmashala, Himachal Pradesh proved to be an enriching and transformative experience for 20 students selected from various colleges in Goa, including two students from Shree Damodar College of Commerce & Economics. The camp started on 14th January 2024 and ended on 23rd January 2024.The program aimed at fostering a spirit of adventure, self-reliance, and social responsibility.

Two students, Ms. Ruby Mahato from SY B.Com ‘C’ & Mr. Kewell Fernandes from TY B.Com ‘A’ were selected based on their physical test and personal interview. Additionally, 18 students from various colleges across Goa also participated. The inclusion of teams from Karnataka and Kerala added a diverse and collaborative dimension to the entire camp.

The camp included different adventure activities such as early morning trekking at St. John Church, Prayer Flag point Dharamkot, trek to Triund point, Natural  rock climbing, Artificial Rock Climbing, rappelling, Jumaring and river crossing. These activities not only tested the physical endurance of the participants but also encouraged teamwork and mutual support.

The camp also provided a unique platform for cultural exchange as students from different colleges of Goa as well as students from Karnataka and Kerala came together and presented their culture in the form of dance and music. Team Goa presented ‘Dekhni’ and ‘Katti Dance’ to showcase the Goan culture.

Apart from the adventure activities, the students had the opportunity to explore the local attractions in Dharmashala and its surroundings. Visits to the Dalai Lama Temple, Bhagsu Waterfall, Tea Plantation, War Memorial and the scenic McLeod Ganj provided huge insights into the rich heritage of the region.

Campfire discussions were organized to facilitate the exchange of ideas and perspectives among the students, contributing to their overall intellectual growth. The challenging terrain and weather conditions in Dharamshala presented both physical and mental challenges to the participants. However, overcoming these challenges fostered resilience, adaptability, and a sense of achievement among the students.

Ms. Saruka Kalgutkar, Assistant Professor in Economics accompanied the Goa team. The faculty members actively participated in all activities, setting an example for the students.

Awareness Session on Life and Health Insurance

The Student Welfare Cell of the College organized an Awareness session on Importance of Life and Health Insurance for the students of all Programmes on 15th January 2024 between 12:15 pm to 1:00 pm to educate participants on the significance of securing their financial and health well-being through proper insurance coverage. The session was organized to address common misconceptions and highlight the importance of making informed decisions regarding life and health insurance.

The Resource Persons for the session were Mr. Venkat and Ms. Rama Venkat who briefed the Participants on the overview of the Indian Insurance Industry both in Life and Health. They were also accompanied by two insurance industry professionals namely, Mr. Satyendra Naik from Star Health Insurance and Mr. Sanjay B Dere, LIC Branch Manager, both of who are proud alumni of the College. They threw light on importance of tailoring insurance policies to individual circumstances. Participants were guided on assessing their needs, considering factors such as age, health condition, and financial goals when selecting and customizing insurance coverage to ensure optimal protection. The discussion focused on risk mitigation strategies and the role of insurance in comprehensive financial planning. Students were encouraged to view insurance as a crucial component of their overall financial strategy, contributing to long-term stability and peace of mind. They also addressed some of the common misconceptions surrounding life and health insurance.

The session concluded with questions from students on specific concerns and scenarios related to life and health insurance. 34 students across all Programmes actively participated in the session.

Session on Collaborative and Interactive Teaching Techniques

The FD Cell, in collaboration with the TLET Cell, conducted an enriching session titled ‘Collaborative and Interactive Teaching Techniques’ on 15th January 2024, from 12:30 pm to 1:15 pm in the Smart Classroom. The primary objective was to equip teachers with practical strategies and insights into collaborative and interactive teaching methods, fostering an environment conducive to better learning outcomes. By fostering a collaborative mindset, teachers will be better equipped to create engaging, inclusive and dynamic learning environment that will promote student success. Ms. Swati Bhat, Assistant Professor in Commerce, served as the Resource Person for the session. Mr. Shreyas Dessai, Convenor of TLET Cell, commenced the session by introducing the Resource Person to the audience and providing a comprehensive overview of the session.

Ms. Swati Bhat initiated the session by elucidating the concept and significance of collaborative teaching-learning methods. She presented various strategies, including Four Corner, Round Robin, Team-Pair-Solo, Think-Pair-Share, One Stray, and the Jigsaw method. Real-life examples of successful collaborative learning experiences were shared. She explained various collaborative teaching learning strategies by giving a step-by step demonstration, making the concepts very clear to all. Ms. Swati discussed effective methods for grouping students based on learning styles and strengths. Practical insights into managing diverse group dynamics and addressing potential challenges were also shared.

The second segment focused on incorporating technology in collaborative teaching. Ms. Swati highlighted various digital tools and platforms relevant to the educational context. Further, she discussed the strategies for assessing individual and group performance, ways to balance individual accountability with group success and the need for providing constructive feedback and fostering a growth mindset within the students.

Thus, the session focused on empowering educators to leverage collaborative approaches to enhance student engagement, critical thinking, and overall academic achievement. Ms. Pooja Shanbhag, Convenor of FDP cell proposed the Vote of Thanks and requested the teachers to implement these strategies in their particular subjects to enrich classroom experiences. 44 teaching staff from all programmes attended and benefited from this session. The session was appreciated by all the participants.

Design Dazzle Showdown- Logo designing competition using Canva

The Techtrendz Club of the Department of Computer Science organized the Design Dazzle Showdown, a logo designing competition using Canva for BCA and B.Voc.(ST) students on 13th January, 2024, from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm in Labs 1 and 3. The competition aimed to foster creativity and encourage design enthusiasts, providing an opportunity for students to showcase their graphic design skills and unleash their artistic potential. The theme for the logo designing competition was “Fitness and Wellness,” and a total of 20 teams, each consisting of 2 participants, participated in the event.

The judging criteria included creativity, design excellence, reference to the theme, and originality. Mr. Sandesh Gaundalker, a Communication Designer (Graphics & Animation) and also visiting faculty of the Department, served as the judge for the competition. The winners of the logo designing competition were as follows:

1st Place: Yash Naik & Ashish Mathkar (students of SY BCA – B)

2nd Place: Khushal Naik & Hayden Teixeira (students of FY B.Voc.(ST))

3rd Place: Apsara Ghorasaini & Shrawya Shetty (students of SY BCA – B)

Mr. Jayden Jesus Fernandes, a member of the Multimedia Group and a student from SY BCA- B, served as the student coordinator for the Design Dazzle Showdown competition. Ms. Vinaya Kirloskar, Assistant Professor in Commerce, was the teacher in-charge of the competition. Lab Assistants Ms. Preeti Dhoble and Ms. Manisha Braganza played crucial roles, offering their valuable assistance throughout the event. Ms. Annette Santimano, Assistant Professor in Computer Science is the incharge of TechTrendz Club. The competition was appreciated and enjoyed by all the participants.

International Purple Fest

Students of B.Com Programme participated in the International Purple Fest Goa on 12th January 2024. The five-day Fest was organized by the Office of the State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, Government of Goa, in association with the Directorate of Social Welfare and the Entertainment Society of Goa.

Short Films related to the challenges faced by the ‘Divyangjan’ (physically challenged) were shown to an audience comprising school and college students from across Goa with an aim to alter perspectives. Later a Marathi film ‘Baba’ – a heart-warming tale of the trials faced by a deaf and dumb couple who adopt a normal child – was screened.

Shri Subhash Phal Desai, Minister of Social Welfare, Shripad Naik, Minister of State for Tourism, Mr. Guruprasad Pawaskar, the Goa State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, UN representatives, Jury members and Purple Fest Ambassadors were the dignitaries present. 34 students were by accompanied Dr. Monica M Patil.

Remembering Swami Vivekananda On National Youth Day

To celebrate National Youth Day, the NSS Unit of the College organized a session on ‘Remembering Swami Vivekananda on National Youth Day’ on 12th January 2024 in hall no.2, 5th floor, College Central Block. The session aimed to inspire and motivate our youth, fostering a sense of purpose and social responsibility. The Resource Person for the session was Prof. Sushila Sawant Mendes, History Researcher.

The session began with the welcome address delivered by Principal Prof. Prita D. Mallya. After the welcome address, Ms. Abigayle Rodrigues, a student from SY B.Com introduced the Resource Person to the audience.

Later, Prof. Sushila delivered an insightful and thought-provoking lecture on the life and teachings of Swami Vivekananda. She covered various aspects of Swamiji’s philosophy, including his emphasis on education, selfless service, and the power of youth in shaping the nation’s destiny. Prof. Mendes highlighted how Swami Vivekananda’s teachings remain pertinent in the contemporary world, emphasizing the importance of self-realization, empathy, and a holistic approach to education.

The session also focused on Swami Vivekananda’s belief in the inherent potential of the youth to bring about positive change. The Resource Person encouraged students to harness their energy and talents for the betterment of society. The session ended at 12:45 p.m. with the Vote of Thanks proposed by Ms. Zakiya Sayed, a student from SY B.Com.

The program was compered by Ms. Dhriti Bene, a student of FY B.Com. 64 students participated in the session. The activity was coordinated by Mr. Sanjay Velip, NSS PO in charge, and Ms. Akshada Gaonkar NSS PO.

Face Painting Competition

To commemorate National Youth Day, the Red Ribbon Club of the College organized a Face Painting Competition on the topic HIV/AIDS on 12th January 2024 in Hall no.1, 5th Floor, College Central Block. The purpose of this competition was to showcase our students’ artistic talents and to spread awareness about a critical health issue that affects millions of lives globally. Through this competition participants were encouraged to express their creativity and convey important messages related to HIV/AIDS. The competition also aimed to engage students in a meaningful dialogue about understanding and having empathy towards those affected by HIV/AIDS.

4 teams participated in this competition and the participants were judged based on Creativity, Relevance to Theme, Originality and  Message Clarity.

The winners of the competition are:

1st Place- Shreyesh Naik and Samarth Shirodkar(FY B.Com)

2nd Place- Harsha Hallikeri  and Sweeda Cotta(TY B.Com)
