Live Streaming of Event titled “Touching lives while touching the Moon- India’s Space Saga”

To commemorate ‘National Space Day’, the NSS Unit and EBSB Club organized a live streaming event titled “Touching Lives While Touching the Moon – India’s Space Saga,” which began at 9:30 AM in the Smart Classroom. The event, aimed at celebrating India’s remarkable achievements in space exploration. The session included a series of informative presentations that highlighted key achievements such as the Chandrayaan and Mangalyaan missions, the role of ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation) in global space research, and the impact of these missions on both scientific progress and societal development.

A total of 143 students (44 male and 99 female) attended the event, demonstrating a keen interest in the subject matter. The interactive live streaming event not only provided a comprehensive overview of India’s space exploration history but also inspired students by illustrating the practical applications and future possibilities of space science. Following the live streaming, was an interactive discussion that allowed students to engage deeply with the content. The enthusiastic participation and thoughtful discussions reflected the success of the event in fostering a deeper appreciation for India’s contributions to space exploration. Attendees left the session with a strengthened sense of admiration for the nation’s achievements in space science and a keen interest in pursuing opportunities in this field.

The event “Touching Lives While Touching the Moon – India’s Space Saga” aimed to significantly enhance students’ understanding of India’s space exploration achievements and ISRO’s role in global research. Experiential Learning Visit at “The Goa Hospitality Show 2024”

On 23rd September 2024, students of SYBBA of VVM’s Shree Damodar College of Commerce & Economics accompanied by visiting faculty, Ms. Taniya Nadkarni, visited “The Goa Hospitality Show 2024” held at Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Indoor Stadium, Taleigao, Goa. This visit was an integral part of their course titled “Fundamentals of Event Management”. The objective of this visit was to provide students with experiential learning in the organizing and managing exhibitions and expos, aligning with the theoretical concepts covered in their curriculum.

The visit was designed to offer practical insights into various elements for successful execution of such events. The field trip was an opportunity for 30 students (15 girls and 15 boys) to observe and understand various elements involved in organizing exhibitions and expos.

Expected Outcome of the Activity: 

As part of their Internal Assessment (ISA), students will be evaluated based on their learnings from the visit.  They are expected to implement the concepts learnt throughout the “Fundamentals of Event Management” course pertaining to stall sizes, space management, designing kiosks, colour schemes and aesthetics, lighting techniques, branding, signages, and the overall design of different areas within the event.

‘Macro Marvels’- The Art of Macro Photography

In celebration of World Photography Day on 19th August and World Photography Week (12th to 26th August), the TechTrendz Club of the Department of Computer Science organized an Online Photography competition titled “Macro Marvels – The Art of Macro Photography.” The event held 22nd to 28th August, 2024, aimed to showcase and evaluate the macro photography skills of students from BCA and B.Voc.(ST) programmes. Participants were required to submit their macro photographs, which were evaluated on creativity, composition, storytelling, and technical skills.

The competition attracted 15 (12 male, 3 female) talented participants. The event was judged by Mr. Sandesh Gaundalker, visiting faculty in the Computer Science Department, who evaluated the entries based on the established criteria.

The competition concluded with the following results:

The event was organized by Ms. Shaina Kamat, Ms. Aarti Solanki, and Mr. Yogesh Yadav, students from SY B.Voc.(ST), under the guidance of faculty in-charges, Ms. Girija Gaonkar and Ms. Deepti Kulkarni, Assistant Professors from the Department of Computer Science. Asst. Prof. Annette Santimano, TechTrendz Club in-charge, played a crucial role in the smooth execution of the event.

The “Macro Marvels” competition successfully highlighted the impressive macro photography skills of the participants and aligned with the global celebrations of photography. The meticulous planning and execution by the organizing team contributed to a seamless and engaging event.

Session on “Special Information drive on LIC Agents” (for female students)

The Department of Management Studies, in collaboration with the Women’s Cell, organized an informative session on LIC Agents exclusively for female students of various programmes, on 21st August 2024 from 11.30 am onwards in Hall 2, Central Block of VVM’s Shree Damodar College of Commerce & Economics. The session was conducted by Mr. Dattaram Dhaimodkar, Chief Advisor at LIC, who provided valuable insights into the career opportunities and growth prospects available to those considering becoming an insurance agent.

During the session, Mr. Dhaimodkar explained the procedure to become an insurance agent, including the necessary steps and formalities. He introduced the IC 38 exam, a mandatory certification for aspiring insurance agents, and emphasized the importance of preparing for this exam using available online mock tests enabling students to practice and succeed. These resources are essential for those aiming to pursue a career in the insurance sector.

Furthermore, Mr. Dhaimodkar demonstrated tools like the ‘Smart All-in-One Calculator’, an app that provides comprehensive details about different insurance products. The session aimed to increase awareness among female students about the career opportunities available as LIC agents, enhance their understanding of the IC 38 exam and motivate them to consider pursuing a career in the insurance sector. This initiative is expected to lead to more informed decision-making and possibly a rise in enrollment for the LIC agent certification process.

Bridge Session on ‘Descriptive Statistics’

The Post Graduate Department of Commerce in association with the Student Welfare Cell organized a Bridge Session on ‘Descriptive Statistics’ for M.Com Part I & II students on August 17, 2024, in the Smart Classroom from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm. The resource person for the session was Ms. Yugandhara Joshi, Assistant Professor in Mathematics. The primary goal of the session was to familiarize 21 students (7 male, 14 female) with essential techniques for summarizing and analysing data, thereby bridging the knowledge gap between the courses taught in B.Com and M.Com programmes, particularly in Marketing Research, Research Methodology, and Econometrics.

Ms. Valencia Baptista, Asst. Prof., M.Com programme and member of the Student Welfare Cell welcomed the students, introduced the Resource person and gave a brief overview of the significance of the session.

Ms. Yugandhara commenced the session by discussing the significance of descriptive statistics in data analysis. She explained that measures of central tendency are statistical tools used to identify the central or typical value within a dataset. The session covered key measures such as the ‘Mean’ which represents the average value, the ‘Median’ which identifies the middle value and the ‘Mode’ which shows the most frequent value in the dataset. Additionally, the session discussed Quartiles, Percentiles, and Deciles, which divide the data into specific parts, allowing for a more detailed understanding of the distribution. The second part of the session focused on Measures of Dispersion, which describe the spread or variability within a dataset. The session introduced important concepts like the ‘Range’ which gives the difference between the maximum and minimum values, ‘Standard Deviation’ which measures the average deviation from the mean and ‘Variance’ which quantifies the overall data spread and Coefficient of Variation which facilitates comparison of consistency between two data sets. Further, the session discussed ‘Skewness’ which indicates the asymmetry of the distribution, and ‘Kurtosis’ which provides insights into the tails and peak of the distribution, highlighting the presence of outliers.

The session concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Vaibhav Girap, student of M.Com Part II, who expressed gratitude to Ms. Yugandhara Joshi for her valuable insights and engaging session on Descriptive Statistics.

Expected Outcome of the Activity:

The Bridge Session on ‘Descriptive Statistics’ is expected to enhance students’ understanding of key statistical concepts, bridging the gap between their B.Com and M.Com coursework. With these skills, they will be better equipped to analyze and understand data, important for their research and future careers. This basic knowledge will also get them ready for more advanced courses of M.Com like Marketing Research, Research Methodology, and Econometrics.

TECH TANK 2024-25

On August 16, 2024, the Department of Computer Science organized the TECH TANK event for 73 TY BCA students (48 male, 25 female) in the Smart Classroom from 9:00 am to 2:30 pm. This presentation session provided a platform for students to showcase their innovative TY BCA projects to a panel of esteemed industry mentors and receive constructive feedback.

The event began with an introduction of the mentors by BCA Project Coordinator, Asst. Prof. Shruti Kunkolienkar. Following this, 12 project groups presented their Project Idea and Technology Stack to be used. The mentors provided valuable feedback on the projects, discussing aspects such as the technologies used and the feasibility of completing the projects within the given deadlines. Additionally, they offered insights into 2 live projects undertaken by students, initiated by VVM’s management members.

Faculty members from the Department of Computer Science were also present and contributed valuable input to the project groups. The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Ms. Shruti Kunkolienkar.

Expected Outcome of the Activity:

This activity provided students with the opportunity to receive expert feedback and enhance their project work, bridging the gap between academic learning and practical application. One Live project on VVM IT portal will be mentored by Mr. Suhas Mallya another one by Ms. Sharmila Kunde.

78th Independence Day

The 78th Independence Day was celebrated with great enthusiasm and pride at VVM’s Shree Damodar College of Commerce & Economics, Margao, Goa. The event, organized by the Cultural Council in collaboration with the NCC Army and Navy Wing, NSS, and Sports Council, marked a significant milestone in the history of our nation. The celebration brought together staff, NCC cadets, NSS volunteers, and students (totaling to 231 student participants) from various VVM institutions, including G R Kare College of Law and RMS Higher Secondary School.

The ceremony commenced at 8:30 a.m. in the college premises, with a parade review by Prof. Sanjay P. Sawant Dessai, the officiating Principal of the college. Prof. Dessai then had the honor of hoisting the national flag, followed by the recital of the National Anthem. In his address, Prof. Dessai emphasized the profound importance of freedom and the responsibility that comes with it.

Following the flag hoisting, a short cultural program was presented by the Cultural Council, started with patriotic singing and group dances performed by the students of the college, which added to the patriotic fervor of the day and made it a memorable celebration of India’s independence.

The celebration continued with the Sports Council distributing prizes and certificates to students who had excelled in various sports events. These awards were presented by Officiating Principal, Prof. Sanjay P. Sawant Dessai, Vice Principal Dr. Shami Pai (Administration). ANO of the NCC Army Wing, Lt. Sandesh Gaonkar, distributed the Ranks to the NCC cadets.

The event concluded with the “Har Ghar Tiranga” Campaign Rally, where NCC cadets from the Army and Navy Wings, along with NSS volunteers, Sports Council members, and students from the EBSB Club Cell, actively participated. This rally emphasized the spirit of patriotism and unity, leaving a lasting impression on all participants.
