Workshop on “Graphic Designing using Canva”
On recommendation of the VVM’s IT Academics Group, the TechTrendz Club of the Department of Computer Science organized an activity titled “Graphic Designing Workshop using Canva” for the students of Ramacrishna Madeva Salgaocar Higher Secondary School, Margao, on 27th January, 2024 from 11.00 am to 2:30 pm. The Resource Person for session 1 was Mr. Sandesh Gaundalker, Visual Designer and Illustrator. The session 2 was entirely handled by BCA and B.Voc.(ST) students. 57 RMS students attended the workshop. The compere for the workshop was Ms. Anushree Shirodkar from FY BCA, Div B.
The objective of the workshop was to provide students with a basic understanding of graphic design principles, color theory, typography, and layout design. It was also aimed to offer a creative online platform, enabling the students to design stunning graphics, presentations, social media posts, and more.
The Principal, Prof. Prita D. Mallya welcomed the gathering. She emphasized that gaining only theoretical knowledge isn’t sufficient, but rather one must learn to apply it practically. She also inspired them to think creatively and to bring their ideas to life.
The Principal of RMS, Mrs. Cintia Maria e Abranches congratulated the organizing team for providing a platform to enable participants gain hands-on experience using Canva through practical exercises. She also thanked Shree Damodar College for taking the initiative of imparting valuable knowledge.
The first session titled “Fundamentals of Graphic Designing” was conducted by Mr. Sandesh Gaundalker in the Smart Classroom. He structured the entire session by focusing on the Fundamentals of design which centered on Color theory and Typography. The session of one hour duration touched upon various topics such as Color Basics, the Color Wheel, Primary, Secondary and Tertiary Colors, Color Harmony and Combinations, Psychological Impact of Colors, Emotional Responses to Colors and Color in Design. The participants also gained a foundational understanding on the fundamentals of Typography, Typeface vs. Font, Readability and Legibility, Typography Style and Trends, Serif vs. Sans Serif Fonts, Script and Decorative Fonts, Pairing Fonts Effectively, Font Combinations and Achieving Visual Hierarchy.
The next session titled “Designing with Canva” was expertly handled by 16 BCA and B.Voc.(ST) students, spread out across 4 Computer Labs. The aim was to equip the students with the tools and knowledge to create visually compelling content independently. The participants received personalized support and encouragement, with hands-on activities to apply the principles learned, fostering a deeper understanding of color and typography in design. The workshop began with a brief introduction to Canva, highlighting its accessibility and functionality. Participants then learned account creation, explored the interface, and discovered efficient template searching and keyboard shortcuts. Hands-on activities involved creating downloadable posters and brochures, solidifying design principles and application. Participants explored crafting engaging presentations and basic video creation within Canva, expanding their digital storytelling skills.
The workshop proved to be a valuable educational experience for participants, equipping them with essential skills for effective design. The combination of theoretical knowledge and practical application contributed to a well-rounded understanding of color and typography in design using Canva. The students were encouraged to fill an online feedback form to be eligible for certificates. Ramkrishna Reddy, Assistant Professor from the Department of Computer Science, served as the faculty in-charge for the workshop.
